Adelaide's Milera set for AFL comeback after year out

Yahoo13-03-2025

Adelaide's injury-troubled halfback Wayne Milera is set to make his AFL comeback after almost a year on the sidelines.
Milera is expected to feature when the Crows host St Kilda on Sunday in what will be the 27-year-old's first AFL game since March 29 last year.
Milera ruptured the patella tendon in his right knee in the round-three clash against Fremantle last year.
He suffered the same injury in 2021 and missed the entire season, and in 2020 played only two games when fracturing a foot which ruled him for the rest of that year.
Crows coach Matthew Nicks says Milera, nicknamed Junior, is primed for his comeback provided he emerges unscathed through training leading into Sunday's Adelaide Oval fixture.
"We'd love to play Junior, we want to get him out there on a ground he has played a lot of his footy," Nicks told reporters on Thursday.
"There's no doubt he's up to the level. He's an extremely talented player and if he's fit and raring to go, he plays."
Milera's return puts a further squeeze on spots in Adelaide's season-opener, with recruits Alex Neal-Bullen (ex-Melbourne) and former GWS duo Isaac Cumming and James Peatling certain selections.
"There's a healthy competition at the moment for spots, guys know there's going to be some that are a little bit hard done by to miss out," Nicks said.
The Crows coach stopped short of declaring the club's highly-rated No.4 draft pick Sid Draper would make his AFL debut against the Saints.
"It's important that we remember round one is not the be-all and end-all," Nicks said.
"The quicker you can get games into players the better, the more they experience ... there are thing we know he's going to learn from being out there and amongst it.
"A young guy coming in, the experience of playing on a big stage for the first time, a sub role might be appropriate. Or do you just let him loose and let him go ... they're decisions we haven't locked in yet."

Arsenal confirm early Jorginho exit as Flamengo seal signing before Club World Cup

Farewell: Jorginho has left Arsenal in order to join Flamengo for the Club World Cup (Arsenal FC via Getty Images) Arsenal have confirmed the early summer exit of Jorginho. The former Chelsea midfielder was originally due to depart the Emirates Stadium when his current contract expires at the end of this month. However, Arsenal have now moved to mutually agree a slightly premature departure for Jorginho, allowing him to become a free agent and join Brazilian giants Flamengo in time for the inaugural expanded summer Club World Cup, which begins in the United States later this month. Advertisement The 33-year-old - who plays for Italy at international level but was born and raised in Brazil - has now promptly been unveiled as a Flamengo player, signing a three-year contract to play at the world-famous Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Jorginho will come up against former club Chelsea at the Club World Cup, with Flamengo - currently managed by ex-Blues full-back Filipe Luis - scheduled to play Enzo Maresca's Conference League winners in Philadelphia on June 20. First up is a meeting with Tunisian side Esperance de Tunis at Lincoln Financial Field on June 16, with Flamengo closing out Group D against play-off winners Los Angeles FC in Orlando on June 24. 'We can confirm that we have reached a mutual agreement with Jorginho to end his contract with immediate effect to become a free agent,' Arsenal said in an official statement on Friday, before the player signed for Flamengo. 'He became a hugely respected member of the squad. His natural leadership skills, together with his control in midfield, intelligent positioning and extensive, high-quality passing, ensured that he was a valuable and integral part of the club. Advertisement 'Everyone at Arsenal Football Club would like to thank Jorgi for his contribution to the club and we wish him and his family all the best for the future.' Jorginho had already bid farewell to Arsenal last month with an emotional Instagram post which read: 'You know, sometimes the season is more than just football. It's about moments. People. Growth. 'It's about feeling part of something bigger than yourself. When I arrived at Arsenal, I wasn't just joining a club, I was stepping into a family. A team full of hunger. Passion. Purpose. 'I gave everything I had. Every day. Every match. Not just for the results, but for this shirt. For the fans. Advertisement 'Your support... it meant everything. Whether I was starting or on the bench, you made me feel valued. Loved. That's rare in football and I'll never forget it. Now, it's time to say goodbye. Or maybe a see you soon. 'When a place feels like home, a farewell is never easy. But I leave with my head held high and my heart full. To my team-mates, thank you for trusting me, for pushing me. 'To the coach, the staff, and the whole people behind the scenes, thank you for the support on the pitch, off the pitch, and for always being there for me with kindness and love. 'And to the fans, thank you for singing my name, for believing in me. Thank you, Arsenal. With love and respect, Jorginho. COYG.' Advertisement Jorginho is among 20 players leaving Arsenal this summer across the men's, women's and youth sides after the announcement of their retained list earlier this week, along with the likes of Kieran Tierney, who is rejoining Celtic, and loanees Raheem Sterling and Neto, who return to Chelsea and Bournemouth respectively. Portuguese full-back Nuno Tavares has completed a permanent move to Lazio, while winger Marquinhos will join loan club Cruzeiro on a full-time basis. However, the Gunners have offered a new contract to fellow midfielder Thomas Partey, who has been linked with a potential move to Barcelona.

Nate Oats lays blueprint, talks move-in for NBA-inspired Alabama basketball practice facility

Crimson Tide coach Nate Oats has had his hand in creating Alabama basketball's practice and training facility since the project was first announced last year. "They've had me heavily involved in the entire thing," Oats told The Next Round at the Regions Tradition. Advertisement Architects and construction workers probably wished that wasn't the case after Oats came back from Boston last summer. After a little less than a week with Celtics head coach Joe Mazzula, Oats returned to Tuscaloosa with some new ideas he'd stowed away in his suitcase. "I came back and kind of blew up the plans," Oats said. CONSTRUCTION NEWS: Where were cuts made on new budget approved for Alabama basketball's practice facility? FUTURE PLANS: Nate Oats gives timeline on replacing ex-Alabama basketball assistant "Literally, we're to the end, and I'm like no, we're doing it all different," Oats said. Advertisement The communication went all the way to UA Director of Athletics Greg Byrne and President Stuart Bell, who agreed to Oats' requests. "I think it's gonna be a one-of-a-kind facility. The people designing it said they'd pitched these ideas to people and they didn't really buy em," Oats said. Nate Oats talks blueprint of Alabama basketball training and practice facility "It's gonna be very integrated," Oats explained. "It's going to be a lot easier to build relationships with players, and I think that's very important in the transfer portal, NIL day." Oats said there won't be a player lounge or a staff lounge, but "one big shared space." Advertisement Where Oats' office is currently located in Coleman Coliseum, he's on the opposite end of where players are practicing, so he struggles to know when guys are coming in to shoot, or who's available for a quick conversation before a voluntary workout. Oats explained that his office on the practice floor neighbors three more for Crimson Tide assistants, all standing across from the weight room, which will conjoin with the training room. Using his hands to lay out the blueprint of the facility, Oats indicated his office will be closest to the stairs, which lead to the second floor that'll host support staff and the common area for all involved in the program. How much was the courtyard addition that Oats is so excited about? Oats gave a smirk when he brought up the courtyard, one of the more recent additions approved for the facility, going on to note he has one at his house and often finds himself tempted to work outside. Advertisement In February, the project's budget increased by $500k when the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees voted for the facility to include separate courtyards for men's and women's teams, which will serve as communal areas for players and incoming recruits. Two months later, trustees voted to slash $115k of the budget previously allocated to 'Landscaping.' "I hate being locked up in an office," Oats said. Oats' one rule? "No bird baths." The University of Alabama unveiled the first banner honoring the school's first Final Four appearance Friday, Oct. 11, 2024, in Coleman Coliseum. Alabama head coach Nate Oats shows off his Final Four ring after it was presented by athletics director Greg Byrne and president Stuart Bell. When is Alabama basketball expected to move in to new home? The facility is expected to be complete by "next summer," according to Oats, adding the team anticipates moving in "this time next year." By that estimate, all should be said and done by May 2026. Advertisement Byrne told the Tuscaloosa News in December that the facility will offer "the latest technology," adding that the "first step" Alabama takes towards renovations on Coleman start with the practice facility. "I'm super excited. I can't wait," Oats said. Emilee Smarr covers Alabama basketball and Crimson Tide athletics for the Tuscaloosa News.
