Ikea fans assemble for opening of Oxford Street store

Times01-05-2025

In the usual hubbub of Oxford Circus Tube station, a Transport for London employee said the new Ikea store opposite had not yet caused any problems.
'We haven't seen anything yet,' he said. As he did so, a man tapped his card and wrestled through the barricade with the store's distinctive classic Frakta blue bag in tow, promptly getting wedged between the gates. 'But that's obviously going to be a problem.'
As the Oxford Street superstore prepared to welcome its first customers on Thursday, shoppers queued along the pavement to secure a piece of Swedish flatpack furniture.
The retailer's newest inner city outlet opened almost two years after its scheduled date and at a cost of £378 million for the premises alone.
