Injured Matildas 'X-factor' set for Asian Cup return
Australia coach Joe Montemurro also expects Sam Kerr to be fit and firing as they prepare to play Asian heavyweights South Korea, the Philippines and Iran in the group stage.
Manchester City forward Fowler is on target to return to action by November, less than seven months after injuring her knee in the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United in April.
The 22-year-old was facing close to a year on the sidelines, in what shaped as a hammer blow to Australia's hopes of winning the Asian Cup.
But coach Montemurro says Fowler is progressing better than expected ahead of the March tournament.
"I spoke to her the other day and she's on track," Montemurro said.
"She's in Sydney at the moment doing some running.
"She's looking good, and she should be hopefully back playing before November."
Fowler had been in dynamic form for City, scoring 10 goals across all competitions, and underlined her ability with a starring role in Australia's recent international friendlies against South Korea.
"She's a special player and a special player not just for Australia but worldwide," Montemurro said.
"She's that X-factor, and you need those X-factors in these tournaments.
"You need that player to unlock something at times and to have Mary involved will be really good."
Montemurro is just as optimistic about striker Kerr's return for the continental tournament.
Unlike Fowler, Kerr's recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament tear has been prolonged.
The 31-year-old hasn't played since suffering the injury while training with English powerhouse Chelsea in January 2024.
Kerr had suffered another injury - not related to the ACL - that also required surgery, but has returned to pre-season training at Chelsea.
"It was important that she didn't jump straight into pre-season. It was important that there was a build," Montemurro said.
"Hopefully, by the end of pre-season, she'll be at the level with everyone else and then she's up for game time, so everything's tracking positively."
Australia will kick off their bid for a second Asian Cup trophy when they host the Philippines in the opening match at Perth's Optus Stadium on March 1.
The Matildas will then play on Iran at Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast on March 5, before facing South Korea at Sydney's Accor Stadium on March 8.

Jonah Pezet says he wants to chase the opportunity to play in the NRL every week, but insists a loan deal away from Melbourne is not yet at the front of his mind. McVeigh stars as Boomers prove too strong for Koreans
New coach, new captain, new squad, no problem. Australia have preserved their unbeaten record in the Asian Cup with a resounding 97-61 win over South Korea to begin their 2025 title defence in promising fashion in Jeddah. A new dawn beckoned at the King Abdullah Stadium under Boomers mentor Adam Caporn, the former assistant to Brian Goorjian who led the team at the Paris Olympics. Australia have never been beaten in the competition since their inclusion in 2017, so all eyes were on Caporn and his young brigade with an average age of just 24. There was plenty to like in Caporn's first match in charge as the reigning champions sent an ominous message to their Asian Cup rivals. Tough defence and impressive three-point shooting were the cornerstone of a convincing victory. Player of-the-match Jack McVeigh led the scoring with 20 points, with contributions also from Jaylin Galloway (12) and William "Davo" Hickey (11). Captained by Will Magnay, the Boomers' early aggression caught the Koreans napping with Xavier Cookes landing the first basket in the opening seconds. Then moments later Galloway added the first three-pointer to signal Australians intent with the shell-shocked Koreans forced into taking an early timeout with the score just 7-0. But it helped the Asians regroup with former Illawarra Hawks wing Hjungjung Lee leading their fight back. Lee (20 points) was a constant threat as they ended the first quarter eight behind with the score 25-17. But it was the second quarter that would have pleased Caporn as his charges took control of the contest. The Boomers opened up a match-defining 17-point gap to lead 48-31, the margin largely constructed by resilient defence and brilliant three-point shooting from McVeigh. McVeigh, who had 15 points alone in the first half, found his range from outside the circle as Australia were white hot (62 per cent) from the three-point line as opposed to the Koreans' four from 19 attempts in the first half. The Boomers' athleticism eventually wore down South Korea and entered the final quarter 68-47 in front. For good measure, Caporn then threw on 17-year-old rising star Dash Daniels, the younger brother of NBA star Dyson. It was a glimpse into the future as Australia build towards the 2027 World Cup in Jeddah and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the youngster didn't disappoint.
