
Innovative horse simulator helps riders with disabilities saddle up
"Do you want to go faster?"
Jayne Imeson already knew the answer she was going to get from her six-year-old son, Casey, sitting astride his new steed in a park in Central Saanich, B.C.
He nodded with a smile.
"Always faster — this kid loves his speed," Imeson said.
Casey's usual ride is a Fjord horse named Valla, but on Thursday, he became the first official user of the MiraColt horse-riding motion simulator developed for the Victoria Therapeutic Riding Association (VTRA).
The first-of-its-kind device combines a commercially available riding simulator with an app-based software application designed by CanAssist, an organization part of the University of Victoria, dedicated to helping people with disabilities.
The system allows riders to control the speed of their simulated ride through a variety of virtual trails. The university says it's aimed particularly at people unable to ride a real horse.
Casey has cerebellar ataxia affecting his muscle control, but he can ride Valla at the VTRA, which has 13 horses of different sizes and kinds.
But Casey's toothy grin as he rode the MiraColt suggested it was a good substitute.
Users who straddle and sway on the device the size of a large suitcase can pick the scene displayed on a screen — a local park, an urban street or the Arizona desert.
"It replicates the movement of a horse at the gait of a walk," said Liza Gagel, executive director of the VTRA.
"It can go from a very slow walk to a very, very fast walk, and the walk is actually the most beneficial gait for therapeutic purposes, for both physical and mental movement."
Gagel said the simulator had the promise to help her organization meet growing demand, as they are limited by the number of hours, horses, and staff they have.
"So we are trying to figure out how we are going to meet the needs of our community, and then CanAssist showed up at the right time," she said.
Paul Green, associate director of operations and technology development with CanAssist, says the project is an "ideal example" of the collaborations they like to work on.
"As much fun as it could be for me and the tech development team to hop into a room and start thinking of creating the next greatest assistive technology, that's not how we operate," Green said. "We work in response and ideate in response to requests from the community."
That could be an individual with a disability, a clinician, an educator, or an organization like the VTRA, Green says. CanAssist determines whether there's an existing solution, whether that can be modified, or whether they need to design a new one from scratch.
"This project was essentially a combination of that — some of it existed in terms of the MiraColt mechanical piece, but connecting that with a CanAssist-designed, more immersive experience for their clients and participants."
About 230 participants take part in the riding association's program, Gagel said, with 50 more people waiting.
She said the simulator would allow riders to warm up their muscles and improve core strength, or allow people with behavioural challenges to release some of their energy, before riding a real horse.
The simulator can also easily move to other locations.
"We can actually pick it up and take it to clinics or a physiotherapist's office or people's homes, if that is a need," Gagel said.
Imeson says she's seen the benefits of therapeutic riding.
Casey has been riding with the association for two years, and the improvements have "truly been incredible."
She said the simulator "does an incredible job of replicating the horse movement," and she believes it would help her son make additional gains.
"When he is in session here ... he's always improving his abilities and his balance and his motor skills and his reflexes," she said. "It's leaps and bounds."
The simulator is the third project between the riding association and CanAssist during a 15-year collaboration with two local donors, Lynda and Murray Farmer, covering the full cost of the project, which is undisclosed.
The other projects include a saddle support to help a rider with cerebral palsy sit upright, and a set of steps resembling a small staircase that helps riders get on a cart for one of the VTRA's programs.

AI could transform how we monitor hurricanes. But experts say it needs work
When post-tropical storm Fiona hit Peggy Savery's cliffside blue bungalow in Port aux Basques, N.L., her safety came down to minutes, not hours. "I don't think we were out no more than 30 minutes when it hit," Savery told What On Earth. She was able to get out in time, but her home and all her possessions fell into the ocean. The 2022 storm devastated Atlantic Canada and some Caribbean islands. Now she lives a bit further from the ocean — and when a hurricane or major storm is on the horizon, she's on alert. "People that believe this will never happen again, kind of have their heads in the sand," said Savery. Some experts believe an infusion of artificial intelligence (AI) will give a significant boost to current hurricane monitoring, though more development and research is needed. AI is currently being integrated into weather forecasting systems around the world, including at the U.S. National Hurricane Center and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. "It will be the next transformation in meteorology," Jim Abraham, a meteorologist and founder of the Canadian Hurricane Centre, told What On Earth guest host Portia Clark. Tracking and power Richard Turner is part of a team at Cambridge University that developed Aardvark Weather, a fully AI-driven weather prediction system, the results of which were published in Nature earlier this year. Turner says all the best current weather forecasting systems analyze millions of data points about the current state of the atmosphere, which requires huge supercomputers that need large teams of people to operate. They look at data about the current state of the atmosphere and calculate how it will evolve. Instead of looking at all that current information, an AI model is trained on decades of real-world weather data, so it can see a pattern and predict what will happen next. This requires significantly fewer resources to operate. For example, Turner trained Aardvark Weather to take data from satellites and weather stations to predict what would happen weeks later. "That can be competitive with or even better than these big physical models, but come at like a fraction of the cost," said Turner. WATCH | How Fiona changed Port aux Basques, N.L., and the people who live there: For hurricanes, there are two main points of concern for those monitoring the storm: where it's going and how powerful it is. Turner says tracking is the AI's bread and butter. "The AI models are surprisingly good. They actually can predict where the eye of the hurricane will move to. And they're actually on a par with, if not a bit more accurate than, the best hurricane forecasting centres in the world," said Turner. But they aren't as good at predicting a storm's intensity, such as its wind speeds, which is important to determine how to respond to an incoming hurricane. "The machine learning AI-based methods have not been good on those. So there's still work to do in this space," said Turner. The future of AI and hurricanes Turner says that even though AI isn't perfect, it's developing at a quicker pace than other forecasting technologies. Often, developing and improving a regular weather forecasting system takes years. "In the machine learning models, you can add new data, you can reconfigure it, you can retrain it all in a matter of days," he said. Even as developments continue, Abraham says not to expect AI to fully replace traditional forecasting. The two need each other, he says, as AI relies on data collected from traditional forecasts. "It will involve five years at least of testing, I think, to really thoroughly evaluate these things and properly develop them so they can become operational, reliable systems that we depend on day to day," said Turner. "That involves running the physical systems — the current approach — alongside the AI approaches for multiple years to make sure they're safe." But that development is at risk of slowing, as U.S. climate organizations face cuts under U.S. President Donald Trump's administration. Hundreds of weather forecasters were cut from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in February in the name of budget cuts. "The data which people like NOAA provide ... in an open way has been completely invaluable for training these systems," said Turner. Environment and Climate Change Canada denied What On Earth's request for an interview about how cuts to NOAA would affect hurricane forecasting in Canada."Canadians can continue to rely on Environment and Climate Change Canada for timely, reliable hurricane forecasts and alerts and tracking information," it said in an emailed statement. With the potential of AI in the forecast, there's hope that people like Peggy Savery, who live in the path of these powerful storms and are at risk of taking the brunt of the damage, might be better prepared when the next one hits.

Location sharing is part of social life with Gen Z — but it can take a mental toll
Chantle Jovellanos knows were all 22 of her closes friends and family members are at any given time, with the help of Apple's Find My function. The 18-year-old from Toronto checks it when she's on her way to meet up with someone to see if they're running late, or occasionally just to see what friends are up to, though never, she says, in a nosy way. "It's the same kind of vibe as when you text a friend to check up on them," she said. "It's kind of just like being like, 'Oh, I wanna see what's going on in their life right now.' " For younger social media users like Jovellanos, location sharing has become a way to stay connected and signify who your inner circle is. A recent survey by CivicScience found that Gen Z adults were the age group most likely to share their locations with others. Last week, Instagram unveiled its new Maps feature, joining a growing list of platforms like Find My, the Life360 app, and Snapchat's Snap Map, which allow users to know each other's whereabouts in real time. Social media experts and psychologists say sharing this information, even with friends and family, comes with consequences, and they urge social media users to think carefully before clicking "share my location." But according to Jovellanos, sharing your location with someone says, in essence, that you trust them. So when you stop sharing, or refuse to do it in the first place, that can send the opposite message. "It's kind of like the equivalent of unfollowing someone on social media," Jovellanos said, recalling a situation where a former friend stopped sharing their location with multiple people at once, triggering an uncomfortable conversation that led to the end of the friendship. What's Instagram's map feature? Meta, Instagram's parent company, stresses that its new Maps feature is turned off by default. Users who opt in can also select who they want to see their location, turn off location sharing for certain geographical locations and turn the feature off entirely at any time. In a blog post, the company pitched the map feature as a "new, lightweight way to connect with each other." But so far the feature doesn't seem to have taken off, and a few claimed they saw their location shared automatically. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, said in a post on Meta's Threads that those users likely weren't broadcasting their locations in real time. "We're double checking everything, but so far it looks mostly like people are confused and assume that, because they can see themselves on the map when they open, other people can see them, too," Mosseri wrote. Adding a location to an Instagram post or story — for example, tagging the Rogers Centre when posting a photo from a Jays game — will make the post appear on the map even though you're no longer at the event. FOMO and managing perceptions Experts say that letting people see your location in real time comes at a cost. A 2023 report on U.S. teen girls' social media use asked respondents about the impact different social media features had on them. Forty-five per cent of respondents said location sharing had a negative impact, making it the function with the biggest reported negative impact. There were also concerns about safety — including the fear of stalking, which has been well documented. The fear of missing out (or FOMO) was another. That's a feeling Rachel McHugh knows well from when her best friend was vacationing in Europe. She used Apple's Find My function to see where her friend was dining or what landmarks she was visiting. In part, it brought her joy to know her friend was having an amazing time. "[I could] pop it open and be like, 'Oh, she's at a castle now. She gets to explore this. I can't wait to ask her about it,' " McHugh said. But it also made her acutely aware of what she was missing out on while stuck at her desk job. Emma Duerden, Canada Research Chair in Neuroscience and Learning Disorders and a professor at Western University in London, Ont., says FOMO does have a real impact, with research suggesting that those who felt FOMO also experienced changes in the region of the brain associated with social networking and how we process feelings. And unlike other kinds of social sharing where users can choose what image or words to use, location data doesn't allow you the "ability to curate how you're presenting yourself," said Xinru Page, an associate professor at Colorado's Brigham Young University, who has studied location sharing. She says worrying about what people might think if you suddenly stop sharing your location can also have a big impact, which makes disconnecting easier said than done. Off by default the right move: expert Location sharing is nothing new — FourSquare, Google Latitude and Life360 have all been around since the late 2000s, while Snapchat and Apple's Find My came about in the mid 2010s. But Page says its introduction on Instagram — one of the most popular social media sites — makes the function more widely available. She says Instagram made the right choice in turning location sharing off by default, and appreciates the controls that allow parents to make sure it stays turned off for their kids. But she still worries about whether teens will use it safely and responsibly. Pamela Wisniewski, who studies social computing and privacy as the director of the U.S.-based Sociotechnical Interaction Research Lab says the best practice is to weigh the benefits and risks carefully before sharing your location data, and to only do it on a case-by-case basis, rather than having it on all the time. "Realize that some of the risks are unknown at the time that you make the post," Wisniewski said. "And then once it's out there, sometimes you can't take that back." McHugh says she doesn't mind the idea of Instagram's Map function, but for now, she says she'll keep it off since she's already sharing her location with close friends and family on Apple's Find My, which she trusts more. But it's "something I might investigate to turn on … in the future."
