Human remains discovered at site of previous search for ‘Disappeared' victim

, that the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains (ICLVR) was investigating.
Following the recent exhumation of the cemetery in relation to the search for
Joe Lynskey
, information came to the ICLVR indicating another small area of interest within the confines of the cemetery.
This area of interest is not another family grave site, it said.
The State Pathologist has been notified and the remains have been taken away for technical examination.

Mr Lynskey was abducted, shot dead and secretly buried by the
IRA
in August 1972. He was 40 at the time and was the first of the 'Disappeared', a group of 17 people murdered and buried in secret locations during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
Eamonn Henry, lead investigator of the ICLVR, said: 'I want to emphasise that this information did not relate directly to the disappearance of Joe Lynskey and so until we have a positive identification or the elimination of the remains as those of Joe Lynskey or any of the other of the Disappeared, we have to keep an open mind.'
Mr Henry also confirmed that the Lynskey family have been informed.
'We know only too well that the Lynskey family have had hopes raised before only to be bitterly disappointed and so, as ever, expectations have to be managed,' he said.
'The process of identification could take some time and we will continue to offer the family what support we can.'
He added: 'Regardless of the outcome, this work at Annyalla shows that where we have credible information, we will act on it.'

Garda suspended following death of man in Dublin city centre
A garda under investigation following the death of a man in Dublin city centre last week has been suspended from duty. The 51-year-old man suffered severe head injuries after hitting his head off the ground in the early hours of last Friday morning outside the Holiday Inn on O'Connell Street . He died in hospital on Tuesday. The circumstances of the man's death are being investigated by Fiosrú , the police ombudsman, as the deceased had interacted with gardaí immediately before the fall. On Wednesday evening, one of the gardaí who was at the scene was informed that he was to be suspended while the investigation takes place. The exact nature of the interaction between the garda and the deceased remains unclear. Neither the Fiosrú referral or the garda's suspension means the member is being accused of any offence. Fiosrú is obliged by law to investigate all instances involving gardaí which result in death or serious injury. It will be up to the Director of Public Prosecutions to determine if there is a criminal case. It is understood the garda has denied any wrongdoing. The garda was in a patrol car with a sergeant on O'Connell Street just after 4am when they spotted the man in what they believed to be an intoxicated state. The gardaí told investigators they approached the man after they saw him at the traffic island in the street. During this interaction, the man fell to the ground. It is not known if the garda had physical contact with the man, who comes from a north Dublin family. The man was taken to hospital and an on-call investigator from Fiosrú attended the scene. The incident was not captured on the Garda car's dashcam but investigators were able to obtain CCTV footage from other cameras on the street, sources said. A postmoterm is due to take place, the results of which will likely help determine the course of the investigation, sources said. Garda headquarters said the matter had been referred to Fiosrú 'following an interaction between a member of the public and an on duty Garda member on Friday, August 15th, 2025. Fiosrú, formerly known as the An Garda Síochána Ombudsman (Gsoc), said it wants to hear from anyone who was near the Holiday Inn on O'Connell Street at about 4.15am on Friday. This includes passing vehicles and taxis that may have dashcam or mobile phone footage from the area. 'Anyone with information which may be of assistance to this independent investigation is asked to contact Fiosrú at 0818 600 800 or info@fiosrú.ie,' it said.

English tourist in critical condition following assault in Temple Bar
An English tourist is in a critical condition after being assaulted in Temple Bar in Dublin. The man, in his 40s, was taken to Beaumont Hospita l with serious head injuries. The incident occurred at around 12.30am in the Temple Bar Square area of the popular tourist haunt. The scene was preserved and a technical examination has been completed. Gardaí investigate alleged fraudulent resale of Electric Picnic tickets
Gardaí are investigating the alleged fraudulent resale of Electric Picnic tickets reported in recent weeks and are warning people not to trust third-party sales for a sold-out event. The Electric Picnic arts and music festival is due to take place in Stradbally, Co Laois, next weekend. The festival is sold out, but reports have circulated on social media of people allegedly being scammed while attempting to purchase third-party tickets. 'It is important that people exert a great degree of caution if attempting to purchase tickets for a sold-out event through any third-party, known or otherwise,' a Garda press officer said. 'Do not trust that the tickets you believe you are purchasing are real. It is likely that they will not materialise and, in fact, do not exist.'
