MACC detains trio in RM21mil corruption, money laundering probe

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained three officers from two banking institutions in the city on suspicion of involvement in money laundering and corruption linked to loan applications totalling over RM21 million.
Sources said the business manager, department head and branch manager are believed to have jointly possessed, altered, transferred and used funds from bribes received from three companies last year.
"Preliminary investigations indicate that the department head had allegedly solicited and received over RM170,000 in bribes from the three companies, which had submitted a total of five loan applications amounting to more than RM21 million.
"The bribes were given in return for processing and approving the loan applications submitted," said a source.
MACC detained the three suspects between 4pm and 5pm yesterday at the commission's headquarters in Putrajaya, where they were having their statements recorded.
MACC also froze four individual bank accounts involving about RM268,000 and seized three telecommunication devices along with a laptop.
MACC Anti-Money Laundering Division director Norhaizam Muhammad confirmed the arrests, saying that the case was being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
The suspects will be brought to the Putrajaya magistrate's court this morning for a remand application.

Beng Hock's family not filing judicial review over NFA decision

Teoh Beng Hock's sister, Lee Lan, during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today. KUALA LUMPUR : The family of Teoh Beng Hock has decided not to pursue a judicial review of the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) decision to once again classify his death as requiring no further action (NFA). His sister, Lee Lan, said the decision was made after consulting family members and their lawyer, Ramkarpal Singh. 'The judicial review will take three years to complete. Chances of winning the review are also slim as it would be the first judicial review brought in a criminal case,' she told a press conference at the KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall here today. Last week, the AGC said it found insufficient evidence to bring charges following a fresh investigation by police, thus maintaining its NFA classification. The re-investigation had been ordered by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in November last year, which directed police to re-examine all aspects of the case. Lee Lan had expressed disappointment over the outcome and called for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to honour his promise to deliver justice in her brother's case. Beng Hock was found dead on July 16, 2009 after falling from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, Selangor, after being questioned for several hours by officers from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). An inquest into his death initially returned an open verdict. However, in 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that Beng Hock's death was caused by 'one or more unknown persons', including MACC officers. Meanwhile, Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement chairman Ng Yap Hwa raised concerns over the selective presentation of the Court of Appeal's judgment in AG Dusuki Mokhtar's letter. 'His letter stated that the Court of Appeal in 2014, ruled that an unknown person caused Beng Hock's death through unlawful means. 'However, the actual judgment is that one or more unknown persons, including MACC officers, caused his death through unlawful means,' he said at the same press conference. Ng called for Dusuki to clarify why the reference to MACC officers was not included in the official explanation. He also questioned whether this omission indicated that the AGC and police had excluded MACC personnel from the scope of their investigations. Lee Lan again appealed to Cabinet ministers, especially those from DAP, to help her family uncover the truth behind her brother's death. 'When the current ministers were in the opposition bloc, they told us they had no power to help the case. Now that they are in power, they are unable to keep their promises,' she added.

Brunei employer fined RM115,000 for unpaid wages to a domestic helper since 2008

Image from The Star/Asia News Network BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): A local man was ordered to pay a total fine of BND35,200 (RM115,000) or face 98 weeks' imprisonment by the Magistrate's Court for failing to pay his domestic helper's salary since 2008. 59-year-old Awang Aji bin Eya pleaded guilty to 98 charges before Magistrate Syaffina Shahif on May 21. The court imposed a BND200 fine for each of the first 20 charges, in default one week's imprisonment for each, and a BND400 fine for each of the remaining 78 charges, also in default one week's imprisonment for each. The first 20 charges were framed under the now-repealed Section 108(1) of the former Labour Act, punishable under Section 120(b) of the same Act, for offences committed before September 3, 2009. The remaining 78 charges were under Section 39(1) of the Employment Order, carrying penalties under Section 148 of the same legislation. The case involved the non-payment of the domestic helper's wages from 2008, despite being employed since 2000. The court, invoking Section 130 of the Labour Act and Section 140 of the Employment Order, further ordered that BND20,433 of the fine be paid to the domestic helper, representing the total sum of unpaid wages owed. The defendant was given until February 3, 2026, to make full payment, failing which he will have to serve the default custodial sentence of 98 weeks' imprisonment. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
