It was a gift by Parameshwara at Ranya Rao's wedding: DKS

The Hindu22-05-2025
Even as raids by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) continues at Home Minister G. Parameshwara-run Sri Siddhartha Academy for Higher Education Tumakuru, on Thursday in connection with the Ranya Rao's gold smuggling case, Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, referring to a ₹40 lakh transaction flagged by the agency said that it pertained to a gift by Dr. Parameshwara at Ranya Rao's wedding. This came even as Dr. Parameshwara refused to comment on the Ranya Rao link.
The ED raided 16 locations linked to Ranya Rao's financial transactions on Wednesday, which included hawala operators among others.
ED sources said that an educational trust had cleared credit card bill of Ranya Rao to the extent of ₹40 lakh. Sources said while the payment was made on the instructions of an influential individual, the institute did not have any supporting documentation.
Following the raids on Wednesday, Mr. Shivakumar visited Dr. Parameshwara at his residence on Thursday morning and later spoke to mediapersons on multiple occasions through the day.
'As the party president I have to ask him about the raids on his institutions and as to why his name was cropping up. Dr. Parameshwara said it was a gift during a marriage. We are in public life, we run institutions and we give a lot of gifts to people we know — ₹1 lakh, ₹10 lakh, ₹5 lakh, ₹10 lakh, nothing wrong in it,' he said, adding that Dr. Parameshwara may have helped an officer working with him during a marriage in the family by giving a gift and it was 'natural'.
He further sought to distance Dr. Parameshwara from allegations of gold smuggling against Ranya Rao. 'As far as the woman's activities are concerned, no politician, let alone a senior leader and Home Minister like Dr. Parameshwara would ask her to smuggle gold. As politicians we meet thousands of people and we cannot be sure of the antecedents of all of them. The case against her is unrelated and let the law take its own course, we will not interfere,' he said.
Meanwhile, speaking to mediapersons on Thursday, Dr. Parameshwara said ED officials had raided three colleges of Sri Siddhartha Academy for Higher Education.
'They came on Wednesday and Thursday and raids are still on. I have asked our staff to cooperate with the officials and give all accounts they ask for,' he said.
When quizzed over the link to Ranya Rao case, he said it was not prudent to comment when the investigation was under way. 'Let the investigation be completed. I don't want to comment at this stage,' he said.
Ranya Rao, a film actor and stepdaughter of DGP-rank officer K. Ramachandra Rao, was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence sleuths on March 3 at Kempegowda International Airport for allegedly smuggling 14.2 kg of gold.

ED probes Anil's RHFL for writing off Rs 7k cr loans to group firms

NEW DELHI: As the ED sifts through voluminous documents and digital records seized from Anil Ambani 's Reliance group entities during searches, which began on July 24 and concluded on Sunday, the agency, in particular, is looking at alleged diversion of Rs 12,000 crore loans by Reliance Home Finance Ltd (RHFL) to various related entities. ED is being assisted in its task by National Financial Reporting Authority, CBI, Security and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) and National Housing Bank, since it involves misappropriation of huge public funds. At least a dozen related entities of the group are currently undergoing insolvency proceedings, which means massive haircuts for banks. Sources said 22 individuals, who are key management personnel and associates of Ambani, have come under the radar of the agency and are being investigated, besides the 60 companies that were covered during the searches lasting over 72 hours. A Sebi investigation report (shared with ED) has highlighted alleged laundering of funds by RHFL, which had written off around Rs 7,000 crore out of the Rs 12,000 crore of loans it had extended to various entities linked to the Anil Ambani group. Ambani is already under investigation for his group entity RHFL availing funds of Rs 2,965 crore from Yes Bank by allegedly paying bribes to its former CEO Rana Kapoor through his wife Bindu Kapoor and her companies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do You Speak English? A forensic audit, commissioned by the bank, has also concluded diversion of this amount to related companies. Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure, in identical statements, said, "The company and all its officials have fully cooperated and will continue to cooperate with the authority". On the alleged diversion of Rs 12,000 crore by RHFL to related entities, a company official said, "The account of RHFL has been fully resolved with change in management pursuant to the judgment of SC in 2023. ..Allegations of other irregularities are sub-judice and as a matter of fact, the Sebi order has been challenged before SAT (Securities Appellate Tribunal) since 2024". "Sebi vide its order dated Aug 22, 2024, has found that RHFL has engaged in a fraudulent scheme to divert funds for the benefit of Ambani and his group companies," a source aware of the probe said. ED is probing related party transactions, in which it was found that Reliance Infrastructure had received funds from Crest Logistics and Engineers Pvt Ltd, which in turn had received funds from at least four entities - RPL Star Power Pvt Ltd, RPL Solar Power Pvt Ltd, Species Trade and Commerce Pvt Ltd and Worldcom Solutions Ltd - all of them allegedly linked to the Anil Ambani group. According to the Sebi investigation report, the forensic audit of RHFL found that "loans of more than Rs 12,000 crore have been extended to various entities which are linked to the Anil Ambani group. These companies had a common registered address, email ID/domain, address and directors". The Sebi report further revealed that as on Sept 30, 2021, Rs 6,931 crore had been declared as NPA/written off by RHFL out of loans extended to linked/associated entities of the group.

RInfra, Rpower say Enforcement Directorate concludes searches

The company continues to operate in the normal course and the said action has no impact on its business operations, said two separate statements issued by both RInfra as well as RPower. 'The action by ED has concluded at all locations. The company and all its officials have fully cooperated and will continue to cooperate with the authority,' RPower said in its latest stock exchange filing. New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) Reliance Group firms Reliance Infrastructure (RInfra) and Reliance Power (RPower) on Sunday said the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has concluded searches at their premises and the companies will continue to cooperate with the federal probe agency. On Saturday, the ED carried out searches against the companies of Reliance Group chairman Anil Ambani in Mumbai for the third day and recovered a number of documents and computer peripherals from multiple locations, according to official sources. The raids were launched on July 24 by the federal probe agency as part of an alleged Rs 3,000-crore bank loan fraud-linked money laundering case apart from multiple other allegations of financial irregularities with crores of rupees by certain companies. 'The action by the ED has had no impact on the business operations, financial performance, shareholders, employees, or any other stakeholders,' the two companies said in their stock exchange filings. Anil D. Ambani is not on the boards of RInfra and RPower. Accordingly, any action taken against RCOM or RHFL has no bearing or impact on the governance, management, or operations of RInfra and RPower, the two companies said. According to ED sources, the investigation primarily pertains to allegations of illegal loan diversion of around Rs 3,000 crore, given by the Yes Bank to the group companies of Ambani between 2017 and 2019. The Union government had informed the Parliament recently that the State Bank of India has classified RCOM along with Ambani as 'fraud' and was also in the process of lodging a complaint with the CBI. A bank loan 'fraud' of more than Rs 1,050 crore between RCOM and Canara Bank is also under the scanner of the ED apart from some 'undisclosed' foreign bank accounts and assets, the ED sources said. Reliance Mutual fund is also stated to have invested Rs 2,850 crore in AT-1 bonds and a 'quid pro quo' is suspected here by the agency. Additional Tier 1 (AT-1) are perpetual bonds issued by banks to increase their capital base and they are riskier than traditional bonds having higher interest rates. An alleged loan fund diversion of about Rs 10,000 crore involving Reliance Infrastructure too is under the scanner of the agency. PTI ABI HVA This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
