Air passengers say airport lounges are the best places for 'meet-cutes'

Air passengers say airport lounges are the best places for 'meet-cutes'

Daily Mail12-05-2025

It's no surprise that more than a few relationships have taken off at airports - time to kill can easily lead to lingering glances, and casual conversations with strangers.
On TikTok, there's plenty of examples of travellers who say they've enjoyed a pre-flight flirtation while waiting to board - and even others who say they've found the loves of their lives via a meet-cute in transit.
One TikTok user @thequeenofmedia, seen strolling through an airport, posted recently: 'God forbid you miss your flight because you made your connection with a cutie in the airport VIP lounge.'
While those travelling cattle class might find it trickier to make a meaningful connection amongst the masses - with many glued to their devices, airport lounges are, say experts, the perfect place for Cupid to strike.
Relaxed, exclusive and with plenty of opportunity for interaction thanks to a free bar and selection of snacks, some singletons have even suggested that dating agencies should set up lounges specifically for those flying solo.
One person looking for love posed the question on TikTok: 'Idea: an airport lounge but specifically for single people travelling.
'You pay a fee to enter or a yearly membership fee and there's free drinks and foods like other airport lounges but you go in to mingle and meet people.'
Another wltm, @travelingtayler, filmed herself walking through an airport terminal mouthing the words: 'I'm looking for a man who travels, has pre-check lounge access, [and a] remote job'.
New dating app Wingle puts singles looking to mingle at 30,000 feet in touch and those behind it say it's no surprise that daters, exhausted by swiping on dating apps, are looking for love offline.
Founder Iñigo Merino, 30, told the New York Times this week: 'There's so much digital burnout, of just being constantly online. We're bombarded.
'And then there's this love-hate relationship we have with dating apps.'
How does his app which promises to give organic airport connections a helping hand work? The app connects travellers with passengers who are also on the app and share the same flight number.
When the flight is airborne, passengers can then chat via the app, which doesn't require the internet - but does ask passengers to keep on their Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technology on while in the air.
A Reddit sub-thread on the subject of meeting a potential partner at the airport saw one person suggest that chance encounters were simply how people met prior to the digital age.
Responding to a post from a user who'd had a deep connection with a fellow traveller while waiting for a flight, they wrote: 'This is literally how people would meet before cellphones and dating networks existed....you just...meet people, vibe with them and see where it goes.'
Another added: 'Better to meet people organically like that in the wild instead of on a dating app…GO FOR IT, SISTER!'
On Reddit, a thread that detailed a fledgling romance between two airport lounge passengers was highly encouraged - with many saying such chance encounters have been happening since the beginning of time
While one person penned: 'This is how relationships have started since the beginning of time!'
Dr Amanda Hanson, aka @midlifemuse on TikTok, revealed how she met her future husband after looking up while waiting for her plane.
She explained in a 2023 podcast how she looking up at the right moment change her life, saying: 'I was going for the second flight of my entire life, to look at graduate schools in Chicago.
'I had a friend drop me off [at the airport]...so he comes to the gate with me and we're hanging out at the gate before the flight.
At one point I happened to look over and there's someone leaned up against the wall reading the newspaper.
She continued: 'At the same time that I happened to scan over, the newspaper happened to go down and this guy was just like looking around and we locked eyes and it was this moment of "oh wow"'
The man 'assumed' her friend was her boyfriend but all was not lost - the couple ended up seated next to each other on the plane - and romance blossomed.

Wayne Lewis served as both lead vocalist and keyboardist, contributing to some of the band's biggest hits, including Always, Secret Lovers, Circles, Silver Shadow, and Masterpiece. Atlantic Star was better once he became leader. He will be missed,' one fan wrote. Another praised him as 'a great songwriter' and 'an icon of soulful love songs.' Yet another added, 'Omg I'm devastated. I was looking forward to seeing them perform this Sunday at Capital Jazz Festival. My condolences.' Robert De Niro tricks Hollywood legend into taking part in TikTok trend

Robert De Niro has played an adorable prank on one of his oldest friends and most frequent collaborators in a viral moment from this week. The legendary actor, 81, decided to drag his long-time creative partner and Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese, 82, into an ongoing TikTok trend. In recent weeks, the wholesome hashtag #goodnightbro has been doing the rounds on the video-based social media platform, reaching millions of users. As part of the trend, young men are being encouraged to phone up their male friends and wish them a good night's sleep – and maybe they'll chuck in a 'sweet dreams' if they're feeling mushy. However, wholesome as it might be, #goodnightbro is still a prank, and the recipients of the calls are often not expecting to receive good night wishes from their pals. And filmmaker Scorsese was the unwitting recipient of such a call from De Niro, who has starred in 10 of Scorsese's films since their first collaboration in 1973. A video has emerged of Goodfellas director Scorsese looking confused after receiving a call from the legendary actor – the Kundun director was encouraged to answer the call by his daughter Francesca, 25. In the clip, Francesca videos Scorsese answering his phone and asks her dad to 'say hello' to whoever is calling – a request he adheres to before a booming voice (De Niro) says 'Hello?' on the other end. After Scorsese asks if it's 'Bob?' calling, De Niro chuckles to himself, says 'Just calling to say goodnight and sleep tight,' and asks if Scorsese wants to jump on FaceTime. The two them jump on FaceTime and De Niro shows Scorsese a brief glimpse of what he's been watching on TV, before the pair make arrangements to meet up the next day at 6.15 (hopefully PM). Fans have worked out that the Killers of the Flower Moon actor is watching The Wiggles with his two-year-old daughter Gia, whom he shares with his 45-year-old girlfriend Tiffany Chen. Scorsese then says 'Okay, thank you, my love – bye!' before De Niro affectionately blows kisses through the phone while the person recording starts to laugh. After the call is over, the Taxi Driver director speaking to Francesca – who has kept the camera rolling – and admits to finding the whole thing a 'mystery'. When he's told that it's just a TikTok trend for laughs, Scorsese, exasperated, exclaims: 'That's what that was? A trend thing?' The two first worked together on the 1973 film Mean Streets, which was directed by Scorsese and starred De Niro in the leading role. Throughout the 1970s, their working relationship produced films such as Taxi Driver and New York, New York – the latter being a musical drama. In the following decade, the pair worked together on 1980's Raging Bull and the 1982 film The King of Comedy before taking a break from each other for eight years. That hiatus ended in 1990 when they combined for the seminal gangster film Goodfellas, and they soon picked up again for Cape Fear in 1991 and Casino in 1995. More Trending In more recent years, the pair have worked on The Audition from 2015, The Irishman in 2019, and most recently in 2023 for the Leonardo DiCaprio movie Killers of the Flower Moon. Despite being one of the most famous and decorated actors of all time, De Niro recently admitted that he's only just realised how good he might be on screen. Speaking to Metro, he said: 'Most of the time you're just sort of looking and [squirming], but it's possible. Especially if you have many, many years distance between the time that you did it and the time you're seeing it.' As for Scorsese, he's admitted that while he's putting plans together for his next film, he's not entirely clear on what shape his next project will take, saying to USA Today that he's still going to 'get going'. EXCLUSIVE Kylie Jenner's BFF Stassie nearly spills out of plunging dress after admitting to plastic surgery regrets

Kylie Jenner 's best friend made quite the appearance at a recent event in Los Angeles. Anastasia 'Stassie' Karanikolaou, 27, who has admitted to regretting some plastic surgery procedures, put on a busty display as she helped celebrate the grand opening of the Oh Polly store on Friday. The Better Half podcast host showed off her curves, modeling a pale pink strappy sequined mini-dress with a plunging neckline. Her toned legs looked even longer with help from some nude high heel sandals. The social media star wore natural-looking, camera-ready makeup with a neutral red lip. Her long, dark hair was styled straight and she kept her accessories simple, opting for a thin gold bracelet and gold hoop earrings. She attended the event with fellow influencer and friend Victoria Villarroel, 33. The Grown-ish actress turned up the heat wearing a black strapless sequined dress with a tuxedo jacket. The model stepped out in transparent high heel mules. Her long, dark hair was styled straight and she accentuated her camera-ready makeup with a soft red lip. Karanikolaou recently confirmed that she had undergone a Brazilian Butt Lift several years ago while making an appearance on Bravo Bri's podcast in mid-May. A BBL, as it's known, removes a patient's fat from their torso, hips or legs which is then implanted in the buttocks area for a more full derriere. 'I don't have a** implants and I don't think it's anything I can hide at this point, yes I have a BBL. I moved fat around,' she explained. She also admitted to getting a breast augmentation. 'Obviously I got this done super young. It's something that I regret and I think that's why it's been so hard to talk about for so long,' she explained. At the time, Karanikolaou revealed she was planning on making a modification to her BBL to 'reduce the size of it a little more,' as she wants to have a more natural appearance overall. The model, who apparently had the surgery in her late teens, explained the pressure she felt to modify her body at the time. 'But I just feel like I was at a point in my life when I was younger and I felt like my lips needed to be big, my boobs needed to be big. Everything ... my butt needed to be big,' she said of her mindset.
