Man duped of Rs 22 lakh in trading scam, one held
CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Police's north zone cyber crime unit on Saturday said they have arrested a man for cheating a person of Rs 22 lakh by promising huge returns in trading.
The victim Dillibabu (35) is a resident of Sembium. The complaint states that O Muthumanickam (55) befriended him on a chatting application and convinced him of huge returns on investment.
Muthumanickam collected around Rs 22.7 lakh from the victim and spent it on sports betting and trading websites like Spreadex. However, the victim did not get any returns or the original investment back, after which he filed a police complaint.
The accused was taken into custody from a house on East Coast Road near Uthandi and sent to prison.

Odisha Vigilance arrests IAS officer Dhiman Chakma for accepting bribe
Bhubaneswar, June 9 (UNI) Dhiman Chakma, a 2021-batch IAS officer and Sub-Collector of Dharamgarh in Kalahandi, was arrested on Monday by Odisha Vigilance for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 10 lakh from a local businessman. Vigilance officials also recovered Rs. 47 lakh from his official residence during a search operation on Sunday. The IAS officer allegedly demanded a total bribe of Rs. 20 lakh, accepting Rs. 10 lakh as an installment while threatening to take action against the businessman if the payment was not made. With no other option, the complainant reported the matter to the Vigilance authorities. Acting on the complaint, a trap was laid on the night of June 8, and Dhiman Chakma was caught red-handed by a team of Odisha Vigilance in his government quarters at Dharamgarh, taking the bribe from the complainant. The entire bribe amount was recovered from Chakma's possession and seized in the presence of witnesses. Vigilance sources said that both hand-wash tests of Chakma gave positive chemical reactions, confirming acceptance and handling of the bribe money. Following the trap, simultaneous searches were conducted at his government quarters and office chamber in Dharamgarh. During the search, cash amounting to Rs. 47 lakh was unearthed from his residence. As he could not provide a satisfactory explanation for the large sum of money, it was seized. Dhiman Chakma was arrested on Monday and produced before the Vigilance Court in Kalahandi. The Vigilance Cell has registered a case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, and further investigation is underway. Earlier, Dhiman Chakma joined the Odisha cadre as an Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer of the 2019 batch. After completing his training, he worked as an Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) in Baripada, Mayurbhanj, from June 2021. In 2021, after clearing the Civil Services Examination, he was appointed as an IAS officer and assigned to the Odisha cadre. Following his training, he took charge as Sub-Collector, Dharamgarh, Kalahandi, in January 2024 and was serving in this position until his arrest. UNI DP BD

She was taken to Ghazipur Medical College and later surrendered to the police. She was arrested after regaining to officials, Sonam was allegedly involved in an extramarital relationship with a man named Raj Kushwaha. Police believe she hired contract killers to murder her husband. They say she conspired with Raj Kushwaha and surrendered later under findings indicate Sonam was in regular contact with Kushwaha. CCTV footage reportedly shows three to four men from Madhya Pradesh, believed to be contract killers, in connection with the case.

The family court had found that her previous marriage had ended only in April 2024, whereas she had remarried in February 2021, allegedly in violation of Section 5(i) of the Hindu Marriage Act which bars bigamy. However, a division bench comprising Justice Arindam Sinha and Justice Avnish Saxena held that such factual determinations regarding her previous husband were unnecessary for adjudicating the interim maintenance plea. The high court emphasised that the sole consideration under Section 24 is whether the applicant lacks sufficient income to support herself and bear litigation costs. 'For purpose of adjudicating the appeal, it is not necessary for us to find on other facts regarding allegation of appellant that there was separation from her first husband… This is because section 24 provides for a spouse to have maintenance pendente lite and expenses of proceedings," the bench noted. The husband, who worked in the police, argued that the marriage was void due to concealment and relied on 2025 Supreme Court ruling in Sukhdev Singh Vs. Sukhbir Kaur to argue that conduct matters in deciding maintenance. His counsel also claimed that the woman had falsely stated she was employed in the Income Tax department. The high court, however, found that there was no evidence on record to prove the woman was earning or had financial means. On the contrary, it noted that she had moved to live with the respondent in Kanpur after the marriage, and was now residing at her original address in Jhansi. The high court observed that allegations of deceit, even if ultimately proven, do not override the financial necessity that Section 24 seeks to address. Setting aside the family court's order, the bench directed the husband to pay a consolidated sum of Rs 15,000 per month to the appellant from the date of her application, April 15, 2025. Arrears were also ordered to be cleared by June 14, 2025, and monthly payments will continue by the 7th of each subsequent month.
