Family of slain Maoist leader Basavraju alleges Chhattisgarh police refuse to give ashes, moves HC
SRIKAKULAM: Family members of top Maoist leader Nambala Keshava Rao, also known as Basavraju, sought the ashes following his reported cremation on Tuesday. However, police at Narayanpur allegedly detained them and asked them to sign a document written in Hindi.
Keshava Rao's younger brother, Ram Prasad, who understands Hindi, refused to sign the document, claiming it was prepared by police to shield themselves from responsibility. The family reached the Jiyyannapeta on Wednesday.
The issue has since circulated widely on social media and among Left-aligned and civil rights groups, which have criticised both Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh police for allegedly violating human rights by not handing over Keshava Rao's body to his family for last rites.
They also alleged that a minister from Andhra Pradesh pressured a superintendent of police to provide misleading information asking the Chhattisgarh police to conduct cremation to avoid law and order issues locally.
A contempt petition filed by advocates on behalf of the family has been posted for hearing on Thursday in the High Court, with petitioners hoping for a favourable order to address what they describe as excessive police action.

Who was senior Maoist leader Sudhakar killed in Bijapur encounter?
Raipur: Sudhakar, a senior leader of the banned CPI (Maoist) and a central committee member (CCM) who had taken part in peace talks with the Andhra Pradesh government 21 years ago, was killed in an encounter in the forests of Bijapur district on Thursday. After the encounter, security forces recovered a body along with an AK-47 rifle, arms, ammunition, and explosives, and later identified it as Sudhakar — one of the highest-ranking Maoist leaders operating in central India, who carried a bounty of ₹1 crore. Born in Pragadavaram village of Chintalapudi mandal in Andhra Pradesh's Eluru district (formerly West Godavari), Tentu Lakshmi Narasimha Chalam alias Goutham alias Sudhakar studied at CR Reddy College in Eluru and later enrolled in an Ayurvedic medicine course in Vijayawada, which he eventually left to join the Maoist movement. Over the years, he climbed the ranks, serving as secretary of the Andhra-Odisha border special zonal committee (AOBSZC) from 2001 to 2003. He was promoted to the CPI (Maoist)'s central committee in 2021 and was in charge of the party's core ideological training unit, known as RePOS (Revolutionary Political School). Sudhakar's wife, Kakarala Guru Smruthi alias Budri alias Samatha, is also a senior Maoist cadre and is currently believed to be working in the Mobile Political School (MoPOS). Police sources said that for the last 17 years, Sudhakar operated largely from the Abujhmad region of Bastar, overseeing the party's ideological indoctrination programmes and managing high-level strategic communications within the party. As per police records, he was involved in several violent incidents in Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and is named in at least four serious criminal cases across Sileru, Makkuva, Elwinpeta, and Annavaram police jurisdictions, ranging from murder and dacoity to use of explosives and unlawful assembly. Sudhakar's killing comes just two weeks after CPI (Maoist) general secretary Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju was gunned down in Narayanpur. With Sudhakar's death, security agencies believe the Maoist movement in central India has suffered another major ideological and organisational blow. Inspector general of police, Bastar Range, Sundarraj P, confirmed the identity of the deceased and termed it a significant success. 'Sudhakar was not only a senior commander but also the ideological mentor for new recruits. His elimination will disrupt their internal structure and morale,' the IG said.

SC refuses more time to Vinay Kulkarni in bail cancellation case, hearing tomorrow
New Delhi, June 5 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Thursday declined to grant a week to Karnataka MLA and former Minister Vinay Kulkarni to place certain documents on record in response to the state government's plea seeking cancellation of his bail in the murder case of BJP worker Yogesh Gowda. A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and Satish Chandra Sharma allowed Kulkarni's counsels only one day to submit the documents, stating, 'It shall be open for the respondents to place on record any document either during the course of the day or hand over the same during the course of the hearing tomorrow.' Senior Advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for Kulkarni, had sought a week, citing the absence of certain documents on record that were before the trial court and arguing that the matter concerns his client's Article 21 rights (Fundamental Right to Life and Personal Liberty). He also referred to a related case involving other co-accused where the High Court has reserved orders on bail cancellation. 'We have not got any time in this. The other accused, whose cancellation is sought, the matter is reserved by the High Court... let that order also come. I'm not saying give me 4-6 weeks. Give me whatever reasonable time... if I don't get even a day to file a document... have it next week,' he urged. Opposing the request, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for the State of Karnataka, pointed to Kulkarni's previous conduct to argue against any further accommodation. Rejecting the extension plea, Justice Karol remarked, 'We are going to be very, very unreasonable and harsh on you. We are adjourning the matter by one day.' The Court accordingly listed the matter for hearing tomorrow. During the proceedings, the bench also took exception to the conduct of a counsel appearing for Kulkarni, who had sought accommodation the previous day, claiming he was on vacation and did not have his black coat, despite appearing before the Court wearing one. On being questioned, the counsel clarified that he had borrowed the coat. 'You put a senior counsel to great embarrassment yesterday... and you logged in thrice... it only speaks volumes about the counsel, forget about the clients... never do that in future. Don't embarrass anyone who we know are noble people in the profession,' Justice Karol stated. The Karnataka government has sought cancellation of Kulkarni's bail, citing allegations of witness tampering. Kulkarni was arrested in 2020 in connection with the murder of BJP leader Yogesh Gowda and was granted bail in 2021. UNI SNG SSP
