Guy Ritchie has footpath diverted around his airfield

Telegraph2 hours ago
Guy Ritchie has had a public footpath that has been in place for more than 130 years diverted around his land.
The Hollywood film director changed the direction of the path, which crossed the grass runway at Compton Abbas Airfield in Dorset, which he bought in October 2022.
While it is believed the footpath has been in existence since 1888 without any problems or accidents, Ritchie's Ashcombe Estates claimed the diversion was needed on safety grounds.
The new path goes around the edge of the airfield and runway and is 1,640ft longer than the established route.
Ritchie, 56, requested the change in March, and it has now been officially certified as a legal route.
Compton Abbas parish council initially objected to the proposal, arguing it would negatively affect public enjoyment of a long-standing right of way.
It said the previous route had good all round visibility and took about four minutes to walk, whereas the new path was more than double the distance.
Dorset council unanimously voted to approve the order at a meeting in March and sent it to the Secretary of State for a final decision.
The parish council then withdrew its objection, meaning the decision could be rubber-stamped.
The airfield is near Ashcombe House, the country estate on the Dorset-Hampshire border, which Ritchie previously shared with Madonna until they divorced in 2008.
The celebrity couple had previously tried to prevent access to a large part of their 1,370-acre estate after claiming it had been wrongly classified as 'open country' in 2004.
A public inquiry ruled that the public had no access to 15 out of the 17 pockets of land, but two tracts, which amounted to nearly half the disputed area, should be open to the public.
The ruling meant walkers would not be able to go within sight of the couple's home.
The Ramblers Association said at the time that it was 'delighted that half of the land contested at the public inquiry has been classed as open country'.
Ritchie and Jacqui, his second wife, split their time between their London home and Ashcombe.
Since buying the airfield, Ritchie has renovated it and started offering Spitfire flight experiences, turning it into a visitor destination with events held throughout the year. He recently opened Lore of the Sky, a smokehouse restaurant, at the site.
The changes coincided with the relocation of the test area for aircraft, which is now further away from any public path. The flying community is said to be 'very supportive' of the changes.
A spokesman for Dorset council told the BBC: 'The decision at the strategic and technical planning committee was to refer the confirmation of the order to the Secretary of State, this was because we had an objection.
'However, after the meeting, the objection was formally withdrawn and therefore Dorset council was able to confirm the order itself.'

Tyson Fury teases major announcement after pulling yet another retirement U-turn as £300m Anthony Joshua fight looms

TYSON FURY has teased that a major announcement is on the horizon amid his continued tooing and froing from retirement. The Gypsy King kicked up a fuss in the aftermath of his second straight defeat to Oleksandr Usyk last December and announced his FIFTH retirement from boxing. 4 4 But he performed a public U-turn in April as he campaigned for a trilogy fight with the two-time undisputed heavyweight king. The Wythenshawe warrior, however, dashed the hopes of fans excited to see him fight again earlier this month by claiming he will " NEVER" set foot inside the ring again. But he's once again left the boxing world on tenterhooks by revealing he's set to make a big announcement. He said on his Instagram story on Monday: "I've got the biggest announcement of the year incoming. Stay tuned." Fury, who celebrated his 37th birthday earlier this month, has arguably the biggest payday of his career awaiting him if he does decide to lace up his gloves again. A lucrative and long-overdue battle with Brit rival Anthony Joshua is in the offing for the dad-of-seven. But the former two-time king of the heavyweights could seemingly care little about fighting again, telling Sky Sports when asked if he'd return to the ring: "Never. Really! "[I'm] too old, look at my beard, all grey. Boxing 's a young man's game." Fury's latest comments on a return to the squared circle are in stark contrast to the admission he made about fighting last month. Speaking ahead of Usyk's rematch with Daniel Dubois at Wembley, he said: "I do miss it. Tyson Fury, 36, claims he will 'NEVER' return to boxing just weeks after announcing comeback and hints at new career "Every single day I wake up in the morning and miss it. "I've been away seven months, missed it every day. I'm open to offers at the moment. "I'm not going to be doing any comebacks this year, that's for sure. "I'm busy, as you can see, I've got Netflix here. I've got the biggest announcement of the year incoming. Stay tuned!" Tyson Fury on Instagram 4 "And then next year, the big GK is going to make a f***ing comeback. "The takeover! I'm gonna be 37 in about three weeks. "I'm going to be the oldest swinger with all these young boys coming up.

‘No one thinks I can do it' – Legendary Cheltenham Festival jockey makes shock comeback after 14 years

A LEGENDARY Cheltenham Festival jockey who found more fame as a trainer is to make an incredible racing return after 14 years. Keiran Burke rode a winner at jumps racing's biggest meeting and trained the iconic Hunt Ball on his remarkable winning run. 2 2 Now, after being teased by stable lads and lasses at his Dorset base, he is all set to dust off his whip and goggles for Newmarket this Saturday. And he even says victory in the world's longest Flat race - which has been reduced in distance owing to the dry ground - would eclipse his achievements at Cheltenham. Burke, now 39, won the 2011 Plate on Holmwood Legend for late trainer Pat Rodford. The victory was dubbed one of the 'romantic' tales of the week with the 25-1 outsider storming home by three lengths. But his career in the saddle ended in a life-threatening incident when he was 'double-barrelled' by a spooked horse. Burke had splashed some cash at the Cheltenham sales and was trotting the new purchase at home when it got spooked. Intent on catching the tearaway, Burke ran after it but the horse kicked him with both its hind legs. He was in intensive care for a week with a ruptured spleen and was so weak he couldn't walk. Burke recovered in time to train the Anthony Knott-owned Hunt Ball, who went from a lowly 69-rated chaser to Cheltenham Festival winner. The horse won seven of eight races in the 2011-12 season - including the Listed Pulteney Land Investments Novices' Handicap Chase at the Festival - before finishing third in the Grade 1 Bowl at Aintree off 154. But Burke insists winning the Newmarket Town Plate - which has been run since 1666 - would top the lot. Especially as he is taking on good friend and rival trainer Tim Vaughan. Burke said: "All the staff said I couldn't do it, so I had to prove them wrong. "It was probably about three months ago that it came on the agenda but, originally, I was a reserve. "I was then put in as someone else pulled out, so it has been a bit all last minute to get everything sorted to go and do it. "I think it would give me loads more satisfaction winning this than winning at the Cheltenham Festival. "I've not had a massive chance to think about it too much, and what it means, but it is starting to sink in a little bit more now. "I think all those old memories will be flooding back, but it is even better there are not eight flights of hurdles to negotiate!" "I've got one thing I need to get done and that is to beat Tim Vaughan. "We have not had a side bet on this, but from what I've seen he is taking this very seriously. "I was up at Newmarket at the weekend, and I was having a drink with Josephine Gordon and she texted Tim a picture of me drinking a pint for my preparation when he has been all over Instagram going running and stuff. "If Tim Vaughan is last and I'm second last I will be delighted! "I don't know about being in good shape, but I got going when I was first going to go for it then I backed off as I wasn't doing it, but now I am doing I've had to get on with it. "I've not been drinking so much or eating so much. "I've had to lose about half-a-stone which wasn't too bad. "I passed the fitness test, but that nearly killed me, however I got through it in the end. "The horse I'm riding is called Chedington's Guest. He is not the easiest horse, but he will be OK. "He was placed in a bumper at Taunton last April and he is a nice horse. "I got the best one eligible out of my lot I could find for the race. "The owners are coming up and so is my son, but as it is on a Saturday unfortunately the staff will have to stay at home and work. "I think it will be a laugh and good fun hopefully. "It has been a long time since I retired. I just need to make sure my legs are still working near the end of it."
