VCU hires Phil Martelli Jr. as new head coach
Martelli went 43-25 in two seasons at Bryant and guided the Bulldogs into the NCAA Tournament this season. Bryant, a No. 15 seed, lost 87-62 to No. 2 seed Michigan State in the first round.
Martelli replaces Ryan Odom, who departed to take the Virginia job after VCU's NCAA Tournament appearance. The 11th-seeded Rams (28-7) lost to sixth-seeded BYU 80-71 in the first round.
Martelli, 43, said he wants to build on the success.
"VCU has long been a dream job for me because of the high standards of excellence and national brand," Martelli said. "I am excited to help carry on the legacy that has been set here and help elevate it to the next level."
Martelli is the son of Phil Martelli, who made seven NCAA Tournament appearances in his 24-season stint at St. Joseph's.
VCU athletic director Ed McLaughlin said Martelli is a good fit for VCU.
"Phil has proven himself as a winner throughout his career," McLaughlin said. "He helped engineer a historic turnaround at Bryant seven years ago and led the program to unprecedented success the past two seasons as head coach. He has clearly lived his entire life amid college basketball legends but has made his own path and paid his dues through hard work, good character and a devotion to developing young men into the best versions of themselves through sport."

Spurs' Carter Bryant honors family member with jersey number selection
Rookie Carter Bryant will begin his career in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs with a new jersey number after wearing No. 9 as a freshman last season at Arizona. Bryant wore it in various events before joining the Wildcats, such as the McDonald's All-American Game and the Pangos All-American Camp. He was forced to change it upon joining the Spurs, with it retired to honor Hall of Famer Tony Parker. The 14th pick also wore a few other numbers, though each one was taken on the team. He opted to go with No. 11, which is the same number his uncle wore. "I wanted nine," Bryant said. "Obviously, Tony Parker has nine retired. (De'Aaron) Fox has four. Steph Castle has five. Dylan (Harper) got two. I was a Kawhi fan, so I was trying to get the two. Vic (Wembanyama) got one, so then I went through all of the numbers I liked and which ones looked good. My uncle ended up wearing No. 11 playing pro volleyball overseas, so I went with 11." Bryant helped the Wildcats to the Sweet 16, averaging 6.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and one assist on 37.1% shooting from 3-point range. He scored in double figures five times, including a season-high-tying 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and two blocks on Jan. 27. The 19-year-old logged six appearances with the Spurs in summer league, averaging 7.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.2 assists on 28.6% shooting from the field. He wrapped up his stay with a 16-point, five-rebound performance on July 17. Bryant has ingratiated himself well within the local community after volunteering at a couple of events this offseason. The team was excited to add him and is eager to watch him hit the court. NCAA Softball Tournament reportedly to seed 32 teams beginning with 2026 tournament
Following another exciting college softball season, the NCAA is doubling the number of teams it will seed in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. According to Softball America, softball will follow the format of college volleyball and women's soccer with the seeding of 32 teams. Only the top 16 seeds, which hosted the regional, were previously seeded. In theory, the committee is seeking to reward the top seeds with "easier" matchups. REQUIRED READING: Texas Longhorns power couple pushes each other in football, softball However, to protect teams from having to travel too much for regionals, the 1-32 seedings will not be straight up to protect 400-mile geographic proximity parameters and avoid same-conference matchups in the regionals. The No. 1-4 national seeds will play seeds Nos. 29-32; however, an adjustment will be made if it pairs two conference opponents who are scheduled to meet one another. There will not be a seeding for the rest of the 64-team field. National seed buckets Here's a look at how the national seed matchups will be determined, based on the No. 1-32 seed rankings: How the 2025 NCAA Softball Tournament would be impacted If the 2025 NCAA Tournament followed the seeding based on the 1-32 ranking, this is how the field would have looked: Future NCAA Softball Tournament changes According to Softball America, the NCAA Committee will continue to examine other issues when it meets in November. Texans HC DeMeco Ryans breaks down addition of new TE Harrison Bryant
Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans might be sad to lose a player in wide receiver John Metchie, but he's excited to see what new tight end Harrison Bryant can bring to the offense. 'Seeing Harrison, he made some plays against us when he was with the Browns,' Ryans said following the acquisition of Bryant on Monday. 'He made a big play versus us. So you see a guy who've very capable of making plays. Very excited to just add him to our roster and let him get in our room.' Of course, Ryans remembers Bryant impressed during the wild-card round with the Cleveland Browns in 2023. The former John Mackey Award winner caught a 47-yard pass from quarterback Joe Flacco before dashing down the field to put Cleveland near the red zone. The drive ended in one of the Browns' two scoring drives before Houston secured a 45-14 win behind a record-setting day from C.J. Stroud. Last season, Bryant spent time backing up Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer with the Las Vegas Raiders, catching 10 passes for just under 100 yards. Over six seasons, Bryant has totaled 98 career receptions for 877 yards and 10 touchdowns. He's expected to compete for the No. 3 tight end role, which should be the same for him in Houston now with Brevin Jordan out for the season with a lower-body injury. 'Harrison, he'll come in and compete,' Ryans said. 'We have a lot of good tight ends, so we're excited to see him just pop in and compete. 'I'm excited to see what he does here over the next week.' The Texans close out the preseason on Saturday against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. Following the return, the Texans will trim the roster ahead of Week 1's showdown against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Sept. 7.
