Broadcom's (AVGO) Trillion-Dollar Comeback Reinforces Bullish Outlook

Broadcom's (AVGO) Trillion-Dollar Comeback Reinforces Bullish Outlook

Business Insider4 hours ago

Broadcom (AVGO) has rejoined the elite group of trillion-dollar market cap companies, rebounding over 70% since April's peak in trade-related bearish sentiment. Much of this volatility stemmed from Broadcom's substantial exposure to China, as a large share of its semiconductor revenue—still more than half of total sales—remains vulnerable to tariffs, unlike its more insulated software segment, including VMware.
Confident Investing Starts Here:
Broadcom's stock had already been under pressure as excitement around DeepSeek—a Chinese startup promoting a cost-effective, open-source AI model—led investors to reassess the broader AI landscape, especially for U.S.-based players. However, when news broke that semiconductors would be excluded from the latest round of tariffs, sentiment around Broadcom quickly improved.
That momentum was further reinforced by Broadcom's announcement of a $10 billion share buyback program —roughly 1% of its market cap—which signaled strong confidence from management. Additionally, the company reported solid growth in AI and software revenue during its April quarter and provided optimistic forward guidance.
Looking through Broadcom's recent updates suggests that it's delivering efficient value creation for shareholders, which means that even with elevated valuations, there is a compelling case to remain bullish on AVGO and maintain a Buy rating.
Strong Margins and Accelerating Revenue Tell the Story
Broadcom's latest quarterly results also highlighted a clear split between business segments: semiconductor revenue unrelated to AI has stayed stable at around $4 billion. Meanwhile, the AI segment is growing fast and has become the company's main growth driver. Infrastructure software revenue hit $6.66 billion in the quarter, up 25% year-over-year and above the company's own expectations, as TipRanks' data shows.
For the next quarter, total revenue is projected to be $15.9 billion—a 21% increase compared to last year, indicating an acceleration from previous quarters.
Additionally, Broadcom expects an adjusted EBITDA margin of at least 66% next quarter (down slightly from 67% in the most recent one, primarily due to a shift in product mix). Still, it highlights the company's lean, highly profitable business model. By focusing solely on chip design and outsourcing manufacturing, Broadcom keeps costs low and maintains margins comparable to those of Nvidia (NVDA).
And since Broadcom tends to be conservative with its guidance—but usually beats expectations while maintaining strong margin discipline—that remains a key part of the bullish case going forward. As AVGO's earnings history shows, the company has beaten expectations for 16 consecutive quarters.
Broadcom Makes Capital Count
As an asset-light business, Broadcom has a model that stands in contrast to companies like Intel (INTC) and Micron (MU), which combine design and manufacturing and require heavy capital investment. That difference has clearly appealed to investors and helped support Broadcom's strong financial performance, particularly in its consistent return of value to shareholders.
What's great is that Broadcom has historically delivered a high return on invested capital (ROIC), typically around 20%. That's a sign of a lasting structural advantage that most competitors struggle to replicate.
If we examine the numbers from the last twelve months and apply the basic ROIC formula—NOPAT divided by invested capital—excluding goodwill and intangibles (which is reasonable given Broadcom's acquisition-heavy balance sheet), the ROIC today comes in around 14%. To judge whether that's attractive, the right move is to compare it to the company's weighted average cost of capital (WACC).
Based on current interest rates, beta, and risk premium, Broadcom's WACC falls somewhere between 8% and 10%, so let's assume ~9% as a reference. The spread between a 14% ROIC and a 9% WACC indicates that Broadcom is generating real economic profit, earning well above its cost of capital.
Moreover, latest figures indicate a growing revenue base ($15 billion total) with a stable profit margin ($10.2 billion in gross profit).
In my view, this ability to consistently generate high returns on capital is a key part of the investment thesis. It reinforces the strength of Broadcom's moat and highlights the discipline in how it allocates available capital.
Premium Multiples with Solid Ground to Stand On
Of course, there is little point in a business being highly profitable and consistent if its valuation is overly inflated. In Broadcom's case, the stock currently trades at 37.8x forward earnings and a PEG ratio of 1.6x, based on a solid long-term EPS growth rate of 23% CAGR. So, while it's definitely not cheap in absolute terms, it doesn't look unreasonable either, especially when factoring in future growth.
If we examine AVGO's earnings yield through the lens of operating profit over enterprise value—which can be especially useful for value-oriented or cash-flow-focused investors—it ranges at just 1.8%, well below its estimated weighted average cost of capital (WACC). In other words, the market is clearly pricing Broadcom at a premium. That premium, in my view, reflects a mix of high AI growth expectations, robust operating margins, and the advantages of a capital-light, fabless business model.
Currently, AVGO has a forward P/E ratio of 37.78 while the sector average remains at 22.44, indicating AVGO is priced higher than its peers in the sector, and higher than its own 5-year average of 21.6. AVGO is set to announce its latest figures in August this year.
That said, Broadcom is a high-quality business, and I wouldn't expect low multiples to be the reason to turn bullish. In fact, it's often during uptrends—when multiples are expanding—that strong companies like this tend to outperform. It's not necessarily after sharp corrections (like the 40% pullback AVGO saw between January and April this year) that the best entries happen.
The stock currently trades at ~$250, well above its 200-day moving average of $197.2. And although it might sound counterintuitive, I wouldn't wait for a correction just to get a 'cheaper' entry. For a stock of this quality, paying a premium can be justified, especially if it's supported by higher risk-adjusted returns and lower volatility over time.
Is Broadcom a Buy, Sell, or Hold?
Optimism surrounding AVGO stock is evident among Wall Street analysts. Out of 29 covering the stock, 27 have bullish ratings, with only two staying neutral. Although the valuation appears stretched, suggesting limited upside, AVGO's average stock price target of $286.60 implies a 15% upside over the next twelve months.
Broadcom's Quality Cuts Through Valuation Noise
Currently, Broadcom appears increasingly well-positioned to scale its operations and capitalize on the substantial demand for AI. Add to that its strong track record of creating shareholder value, and it's no surprise that this is reflected in the trade at a well-deserved premium valuation.
While some might find the current multiples a bit steep, I would caution against waiting for a correction to enter the market. High-quality stocks like Broadcom often deliver better risk-adjusted returns when trading near their peak than when they're 'on sale.' With that in mind, I believe a bullish stance on AVGO makes the most sense at this time.

The Inflation Time Bomb—Trump's Policies Will Hit Your Wallet Soon

Advocates for ideas and draws conclusions based on the interpretation of facts and data. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. With inflation hovering modestly above 2 percent despite President Donald Trump's aggressive tariff increases and immigration enforcement, some might wonder whether warnings about his policies driving up prices were overblown. They weren't. The inflationary pressures are building beneath the surface, masked by timing, supply chain buffers, and massive corporate stockpiling ahead of policy changes. The time bomb is ticking—and consumers should begin bracing for the explosion. Trump's most disruptive policies didn't begin in earnest until months after his January inauguration. While he announced a 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods in late January, the real escalation came in March when rates jumped to 20 percent, then spiked to 145 percent by April before being partially rolled back. The administration's "Liberation Day" universal tariff on April 2 marked the broadest increase since the 1930s. TIMOTHY A. CLARY/AFP via Getty Images Immigration enforcement followed a similar pattern. Though raids began in January, the most aggressive workplace operations didn't intensify until late May, when Trump aide Stephen Miller pushed for 3,000 arrests per day—triple the early administration pace. Only recently have we seen dramatic workplace disruptions that at one point caused Trump to pull back on raids of farmers, hotels, and other key industries that rely on immigrants for labor. However, that pause proved to only be a brief reprieve, guaranteeing that the inflationary pressures from this aggressive immigration policy will continue to build. What truly delayed the impact of Trump's most inflationary policy was an unprecedented wave of corporate front-loading in late 2024 and early 2025. Companies rushed to import goods before tariffs took effect, creating exactly the buffer that's now insulating consumers from immediate price shocks. These panic purchases were so intense it caused the U.S. economy to contract 0.3 percent in Q1 despite robust domestic demand. By May, container imports fell 9.7 percent as the stockpiling surge ended and higher tariff rates took hold. By stocking up as they did, companies bought themselves time to ride through a few months of high tariffs without it affecting their bottom line. As Trump's trade war drags on, those Q1 stockpiles dwindle as companies forestall replenishing their inventories in the hope that tariff rates will suddenly come down. Freight bookings for April dropped 41 percent month-over-month as businesses adopted this "wait and see" approach. The gap between inventory levels and inventory costs has expanded to the third highest in the index's history. In essence, it is becoming increasingly expensive to store inventory while simultaneously becoming more expensive to replace it. The Federal Reserve's stance reveals perhaps the clearest evidence that policymakers anticipate the inflationary surge ahead. Despite months of consistently lower inflation readings and unprecedented presidential pressure to cut rates, Fed officials have held interest rates steady—a decision that only makes sense if they're bracing for future price pressures. By keeping rates elevated despite political pressure and recent good inflation data, the Fed is acknowledging their belief that current price stability is temporary. They're positioning for the inflationary impact they know is coming rather than reacting to the deceptively calm present. The ingredients for an inflationary surge are now in place: depleted inventory buffers, supply chain disruptions in essential industries, elevated tariffs on a vast array of goods, and increasingly fragile inflation expectations. When companies exhaust their stockpiles and face the choice between absorbing higher costs or passing them to consumers, the answer isn't just predictable, it is a necessary function of the corporate mandate to maximize shareholder value. Food prices are particularly vulnerable. With agricultural raids creating labor shortages during peak growing season and tariffs raising input costs, the sector faces a perfect storm. The lag between policy implementation and consumer impact is ending. Trump's own acknowledgment of economic "harm" from his policies—and his scramble to dial them back—suggests the administration has already seen internal projections of what's coming. The question isn't whether Trump's policies will drive inflation, but when Americans will feel it at the grocery store. The time bomb is real, and the fuse is shortening. 3 Phenomenal AI Stocks That Investors Should Load Up On

Nvidia's GPUs have built most of the AI technology we experience today. Taiwan Semiconductor's chips power nearly every AI device. Broadcom's connectivity switches and XPUs are slated to grow as inference becomes more common. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › Artificial intelligence (AI) investing doesn't have to be hard. Plenty of stocks look like attractive investments, and they're often right in front of investors. Successful AI investing doesn't mean finding the next Palantir (NASDAQ: PLTR) or Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA); sometimes, it's just picking the proven winners and letting them deliver. That's why I think this trio is an excellent investment, as all three have a proven track record of delivering excellent results for investors. Three stocks that I think investors should load up on are Nvidia, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE: TSM), and Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO). There's a common theme that unites these three stocks and makes them excellent buys right now. Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs) have built the AI products that we know and interact with today, and with its leadership position, that won't change anytime soon. Nvidia is continually innovating and developing the best GPUs possible, which has kept it at the top of the AI arms race over the past few years. However, Nvidia wouldn't be able to keep innovating without Taiwan Semiconductor's production capabilities. Nvidia can't make chips, so it farms that work out to Taiwan Semiconductor, the world's leading contract chip manufacturer. Taiwan Semiconductor's facilities allow it to produce the most advanced chips in the world at an impressive yield, which is why nearly every competitor in the AI arms race uses its chips. Another company that uses chips from TSMC is Broadcom, which is involved in the AI arms race in two ways. The first way is its connectivity switches. These devices allow GPUs to operate independently from each other, and the information from each device is stitched together to form an answer to a workload that was split across multiple GPUs. Additionally, Broadcom partners with AI hyperscalers to develop their own custom AI accelerators, which it calls XPUs. XPUs can outperform GPUs in specific scenarios Broadcom and the end user have designed them for. While this technology isn't going to replace GPUs, it complements them in a well-rounded AI infrastructure buildout. While this trio has experienced impressive growth over the past few years, they still have a lot ahead of them, making them excellent investment options right now. Nvidia's growth has stayed rapid over a time frame most investors would have never thought possible two years ago. If third-party projections come true, it could extend even further. During its 2025 GTC event, Nvidia cited a third-party research company's projection that data center capital expenditures will rise from $400 billion in 2024 to $1 trillion by 2028. That's huge growth, and considering that Nvidia gets a nice chunk of that pie if the buildouts expand to $1 trillion by 2028, Nvidia would be an excellent stock to buy now. Taiwan Semiconductor's management is very bullish on its growth prospects, thanks to AI. Over the next two years, it sees a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 45% for AI-related revenue. This will help push its overall growth rate to nearly a 20% CAGR, which is incredible growth considering TSMC's size and dominance already. Broadcom may have the most bullish outlook, as it's slated to see huge growth as AI inference begins to take over. Inference occurs when an AI model is pinged for an answer, and Broadcom's connectivity switches and XPU are perfectly suited for these tasks. As a result, it expects to see massive growth over the next few years. In fiscal year 2024, which ended Nov. 3, 2024, Broadcom's AI-related revenue from semiconductors (including switches and XPUs) was $12.2 billion. However, that could reach anywhere from $60 billion to $90 billion by fiscal year 2027, resulting in massive growth for Broadcom's stock. Although all three stocks have been successful investments over the past few years, they are also excellent stock picks for the future. As a result, I think investors should take the opportunity to increase their position size or add these stocks to their portfolio. If AI-related spending continues to grow, these three will be its primary beneficiaries. There are clear signs of increasing AI spending, making this group a no-brainer buy.
