SCCC, Phoong discuss Malaysia (Sabah)-China Expo
KOTA KINABALU (July 6): A delegation from the Sabah China Chamber of Commerce led by deputy president Brett Chua, recently paid a courtesy visit to Industrial and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe.
The meeting focused on deepening collaboration and refining preparations for the upcoming 2025 Malaysia (Sabah)-China Expo, scheduled to take place from November 21 to 23.
The Sabah China Chamber of Commerce, serving as a key co-organiser for this high-profile event, brings with it extensive experience in hosting large-scale trade exhibitions.
During the dialogue, the Chamber presented a comprehensive briefing on the expo's strategic layout.
Positioned as a major initiative by the Sabah State Government, the expo is expected to host over 100 exhibitors from China. Themed exhibition zones will showcase innovations and premium products from China's manufacturing, agriculture and cultural tourism sectors – creating a dynamic platform for China-Malaysia trade and cultural exchange.
Both parties held in-depth discussions on the implementation of several signature features of the expo:
Opening Ceremony with Cultural Performances: The event will kick off with a cultural showcase blending Malaysian and Chinese traditions, symbolising a harmonious start to bilateral collaboration.
Ganzhou Navel Orange Festival (Overseas Edition): For the first time, the renowned Chinese geographic-indication agricultural product will be highlighted through a tasting session and industry promotion, aimed at expanding its global market reach.
An interesting, playful and interactive performance is planned to infuse the expo with youthful energy and attract broader public engagement.
High-Level 'Invest in Sabah' Forum will include distinguished political and business leaders from China and Malaysia who will be invited to discuss cross-border investment and industrial cooperation opportunities.
Phoong expressed strong approval of the expo's planning and pledged full support from the State Government. He emphasized the expo's importance in strengthening China-Sabah economic cooperation and fostering deeper industrial alignment between the two regions.

NEW YORK, July 6 — TikTok is building a new version of its app for users in the United States ahead of a planned sale of the app to a group of investors, The Information reported on Sunday, citing unnamed sources. This comes as US President Donald Trump said on Friday he will start talking to China today or tomorrow about a possible TikTok deal. He said the United States 'pretty much' has a deal on the sale of the TikTok short-video app. TikTok has developed a plan to launch the new app to US app stores on September 5, the report said. Last month, Trump extended to September 17 a deadline for China-based ByteDance to divest the US assets of TikTok. The report added that TikTok users will eventually have to download the new app to be able to continue using the service, although the existing app will work until March of next year, though the timeline could change. TikTok did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Reuters could not immediately confirm the report. A deal had been in the works earlier this year to spin off TikTok's US operations into a new US-based firm, majority-owned and operated by US investors. That was put on hold after China indicated it would not approve it following Trump's announcements of steep tariffs on Chinese goods. Petronas Gas restores supply to Shah Alam, Connaught Bridge after bypass pipeline completed
KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — Petronas Gas Bhd (PGB) has fully restored natural gas supply to Batu Tiga, Shah Alam, and Connaught Bridge following the successful commissioning of its newly constructed bypass pipeline on July 1, 2025. The gas infrastructure and utilities company said the operation was carried out after fulfilling all engineering, operational, and regulatory safety requirements, including the issuance of a permit to operate (PTO) by the Occupational Safety and Health Department (DOSH). 'With natural gas powering between 40 per cent to 50 per cent of Malaysia's electricity, PGB remains focused on ensuring the public feels secure living near this critical infrastructure — a responsibility the company embraces as part of its commitment to safe, reliable energy for all,' it said in a statement today. PGB said as part of its safety-first philosophy, the company has implemented enhanced engineering reinforcements at the bypass section in Putra Heights, including advanced sensors to detect soil and pipe movement, exceeding standard requirements. To ensure long-term stability and structural integrity, sheet piling and engineered support structures were also installed to safeguard the pipeline, ensuring safe, secure, and uninterrupted performance. The company also said a new permanent pipeline is currently being designed with enhanced safety features and will be installed on deep-piled slab foundations, offering greater structural resistance to soil movement and unpredictable ground shifts, given the specific risks in the area due to surrounding development. It noted that the layout will also include new shut-off valves to allow shorter isolation distances in the unlikely event of an emergency. In addition to restoring supply, the company has disbursed more than RM2 million in ex-gratia and humanitarian aid through local authorities, including RM1.38 million in direct assistance to affected families and a RM25 million contribution via the Housing and Local Government Ministry for home reconstruction. PGB also carried out precautionary assessments along other sections of the 2,680-kilometre Peninsular Gas Utilisation (PGU) pipeline to ensure system-wide integrity. These efforts involved the use of inspection tools such as Geopig and Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) technology, complemented by targeted visual inspections at selected segments. The company confirmed that to date, no other locations exhibit risk characteristics similar to those identified in Putra Heights. — Bernama

Clear policies boost Malaysia's foreign investments, says Fahmi
GENEVA: Clear and consistent government policies, combined with political stability, are crucial in attracting foreign investments to Malaysia, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Speaking at a gathering with the Malaysian diaspora, he highlighted key frameworks such as the MADANI Economy, 12th Malaysia Plan, and National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) as factors that build investor confidence. 'These policies provide clarity and assurance to investors. They trust that such policies won't be changed arbitrarily,' Fahmi said. Recent data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) and the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) supports Malaysia's position as a preferred investment destination. Approved investments for Q1 2025 reached RM89.8 billion, a 3.7 per cent increase year-on-year, despite global economic challenges, as reported by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA). The event at Rumah Malaysia was attended by around 50 Malaysians, including students, professionals, and embassy staff. Fahmi also noted Malaysia's advancements in communications, ranking among the top 10 countries for affordable internet and second in the Asia-Pacific for speed after South Korea.
