Is SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Setting Up the Punisher as Leader of the Hand? — GeekTyrant
A photo snapped from the set of Spider-Man: Brand New Day shows a tank marked with a strange, demonic symbol. At first glance, it screamed Inner Demons, which pointed toward Mister Negative. But sources say Mister Negative isn't part of this movie at all. So, what does that symbol really mean?
Fans have noted the resemblance to The Hand's iconic logo, and word is that The Punisher might be the one behind the wheel of that tank. If that's the case, Spider-Man: Brand New Day could be teeing up something huge for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially with Jon Bernthal back in action.
Adding more fuel to the fire, there's already talk about Japanese-inspired villains playing a role in the story. That makes The Hand a natural fit, especially if Marvel is planning to build into Daredevil: Born Again season 3. In the comics, Frank Castle didn't just fight The Hand, he led them. But not without a cost.
In that storyline, The Hand offers Frank leadership and the resurrection of his wife, Maria. He accepts, unleashing their deadly resources to take out major threats like Warlord, Hate-Monger, and the Apostles of War, an arms-dealing syndicate created by Ares, the Greek god of war. Frank also targets society's worst, executing murderers, rapists, and abusers who slipped through the cracks.
But it doesn't take long for Frank to see the cracks in The Hand's mission. They weren't just killing the guilty. Innocents were dying too. With immense effort, Frank broke free of their grip, but the story raised powerful questions about control, vengeance, and how far he'd go to clean up the world.
Could Spider-Man: Brand New Day weave this into Peter Parker's story? It's not impossible. After the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home , Peter is completely alone in a world that's forgotten him.
If The Hand offered a way to bring back Aunt May, would he take it? That temptation could set up a darker, more complicated Peter, especially if he's forced to cross paths with Frank.
And then there's Matt Murdock. If Marvel is laying the groundwork for Shadowland , a story where Daredevil takes over The Hand, things could get even more intense. Frank might step into that role instead, possibly becoming the next big villain in Daredevil: Born Again .
It's a interesting direction, but signs are pointing that way, and if The Punisher really is set to lead The Hand, we might get some early clues in the upcoming Punisher Special Presentation . There's even a chance Frank could be killed and brought back by The Hand as their weapon. That would be wild.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton ( Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ), Spider-Man: Brand New Day is written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker, joined by Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Michael Mando, and Liza Colón-Zayas.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31, 2026.

‘Poltergeist' Returns Rounding Out Halloween Horror Nights 2025
They're here again as Poltergeist returns to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood. The announcement, along with details of this year's Terror Tram, rounds out the offering for this year's event. The haunted house, inspired by the iconic 80s horror film of the same name, first featured at the annual mecca for horror fans in 2018. It became an instant favorite among guests. Once again, the supernatural cult horror classic will take fear-loving ticket holders "into the light," transporting guests into nightmarish scenes with terrifying characters from the movie, including the iconic Freeling family home, famously built on top of a cemetery. The previous version of the immersive attraction brought guests face to face with the terrifying flickering TV screen, the menacing beast from beyond, and the pool filled with floating corpses. Guests were surrounded by a surreal landscape of vanishing walls, floating furniture, and a creepy clown with a menacing smile. Guests will once again find themselves in a race against time to make it back to the world of the living or risk being trapped in the beyond forever. Expect tweaks and upgrades to the original experience as technological advancements (and experience) have enabled the houses at Halloween Horror Nights to elevate the scares considerably since Poltergeist's last visitation. Poltergeist was considered to be one of the "scariest films of all time" when it debuted in 1982. For a lot of people, it's still up there. Directed by the late Tobe Hooper and produced by Steven Spielberg, it was both a critical and consumer success when it came out. Made for $10.7 million, it grossed $76.6 million at the domestic box office, unadjusted for inflation ($241.54 million adjusted), spawning two sequels. There was also a terrible reboot. Blumhouse Rules At Halloween Horror Nights At Universal Studios Hollywood Elsewhere in the theme park, this year's Terror Tram: Enter the Blumhouse will allow gutsy guests to take the Studio Tour tram to the backlot, where they will be able to disembark and set off on foot to encounter some of the most iconic villains from Blumhouse's popular horror franchises over the past 15 years. Among those waiting in the darkness will be The Grabber from The Black Phone and the upcoming sequel, the possessed from The Exorcist: Believer, slaytastic scream queen M3GAN, multiple killers from The Purge franchise, Blissfield Butcher from Freaky, and Babyface Killer from Happy Death Day, to name just a few. For those who want to get closer to the titans of terror, there is the option to upgrade and purchase the R.I.P. Tour, which also includes an exclusive opportunity to meet and scream with select characters featured on Terror Tram. When the time comes to take a load off, the Waterworld space will deliver entertainment once again with The Purge: Dangerous Waters. It's the third year the exhilarating and bloody show has wowed crowds packed into the arena that has become a must-see part of the festivities at Universal Studios Hollywood. In case you missed any of the previous announcements, here's a brief rundown of the other main attractions at this year's event. Five Nights at Freddy's will see guests venture through an all-new haunted house inspired by the 2023 hit film. They will follow in the footsteps of Mike after he takes on a job as the night security guard in the abandoned themed entertainment center, Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria. As they move through the building, they will "encounter the supernatural and become lured into the black heart of an unspeakable nightmare," coming face-to-face with full-scale replicas of the eerie characters from the film - Freddy Fazbear, Chica, Bonnie, Foxy, and Mr. Cupcake. Wrestling comes to Halloween Horror Nights for the first time as WWE Presents: The Horrors of The Wyatt Sicks. The house will have ticket holders "go head-to-head with Uncle Howdy in an experience that not only features The Wyatt Sicks, but honors the legacy of Bray Wyatt." According to a release, "horror fans brave enough to travel through the light of the lantern will find themselves transported into the maniacal minds of The Wyatt Sicks, where each member reigns supreme within their horrific domains." Fans will already be aware of this, but for those who aren't, with its portrayal of dark and twisted characters Including Uncle Howdy, Ramblin' Rabbit, Mercy the Buzzard, Abby the Witch, and Huskus the Pig, the five-strong crew has quickly emerged as one of the most disturbing and disruptive groups in WWE history. Those nightmarish figures are going to manifest in this terrifying new space. Universal Studios Hollywood Delivers IPs Scares And Original Nightmares This Halloween And that's not all. A blood-soaked haunted house inspired by the hugely popular and extremely gory Terrifier film franchise will draw massive crowds of scare seekers. It'll feature supernatural entity Art the Clown terrorizing the fictional town of Miles County, New York, and torturing his victims in creative but cruel and "sickeningly sinister ways." Promising "an unfathomable level of gore," guests can expect "a grisly haunted house oozing with a new sense of terror." Legendary slasher icon Jason Voorhees is the star of Jason Universe, which sees the seemingly indestructible killer from the Friday the 13th franchise get his own haunted house at both Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood. The all-original experience will take guests back on "a vengeance tour through the summer camp to see where it all began, from the creaking floorboards of Jason's ramshackle cabin to the decaying main lodge and the eerie forest that offers no refuge for his victims." Also featuring at this year's Halloween Horror Nights is a house inspired by Fallout, Prime Video's acclaimed smash hit show. It was the first one to be announced. Ahead of the series' second season premiere, the immersive Fallout attraction will transport fans into iconic scenes and put them face-to-face with their characters on a journey from Vault 33 to the Wasteland. When it comes to original mazes, two fan-favorite mazes evolve this year. At Universal Studios Hollywood, 2022's Scarecrow: The Reaping gets a revamp and a new name, returning as Scarecrow: Music by Slash. Set to a soundtrack created by the rock icon, his seventh consecutive year providing a score for a Universal Studios Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights haunted house, Mother Nature "seeks vengeance on the homesteaders for their sins of the past that will be carried out by farmland scarecrows, mute witnesses who have become the guardians of destruction for anyone who crosses their path." Meanwhile, La Llorona headlines the final entry in a trilogy of terror, Monstruos 3: The Ghosts of Latin America, a haunted house with a narrative based on Latin American folklore. In addition to the legendary Weeping Woman, the Colombian female boogeyman, the sharp-toothed La Muelona, and the horse-headed La Siguanaba will also feature to scare the bejesus out of visitors. Halloween Horror Nights kicks off at Universal Studios Hollywood on Thursday, September 4, 2025. However, the twisted sister event at Universal Orlando Resort gets the ball rolling a little earlier on Friday, August 29, 2025. Tickets are now on sale.

WNBA sex toy incidents may be linked to cryptocurrency group's money scheme
Late in the first half of a Los Angeles Sparks-Indiana Fever game on Tuesday night, a neon green sex toy thrown from the stands landed on the floor of Arena, at the feet of Indiana guard Sophie Cunningham. Simultaneously, a group of people during an audio livestream on X were reveling in the moment and celebrating its potential to help boost the value of a memecoin, a cryptocurrency deriving from an internet meme but traded through very real markets online. The coin was created on July 28, the day before the first occurrence of a sex toy being thrown on a WNBA court, and as of Thursday, its worth had nearly tripled in a week. Advertisement 'Someone is tweeting that there's one at the Sparks game,' one person said on the stream. 'That is literally the best case scenario that we could possibly imagine,' another replied, because the sex toy had fallen near Cunningham, who had earlier in the week posted a plea for spectators not to throw the objects onto the court, which was met with numerous memes involving the phallic object. The incident in Los Angeles — as well as others that occurred that evening — appears to be part of a coordinated effort, born out of the murky and often mysterious corners of internet culture, social media and opportunistic plays in the cryptocurrency markets. Like many things on the internet, users often interact without revealing their identities, especially in public settings. Memecoins, a novelty digital asset originating from a meme, are part of an odd intersection of jokes that turn into something users try to spin into an asset with more value, like Dogecoin or Shiba Inu coin. One user speaking on a stream called the attention created by the incidents and resulting chatter 'next level.' 'This is empowering to every f—ing crypto community to start thinking outside the box. Get creative and f—ing do something that makes people actually laugh. Memecoins should make you laugh,' he said, adding, 'The whole mission with this was focus on making an impact in crypto culture.' It appears the WNBA and its athletes are central to the joke, regardless of the founders' intentions, and no matter how players have reacted. The incidents have sparked opportunities for detractors to mock the league and women's sports more generally. 'The sexualization of women is what's used to hold women down, and this is no different,' Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said. 'These people that are doing this should be held accountable. We're not the butt of the joke, they're the problem.' Advertisement On Thursday, Donald Trump Jr. shared a meme that pictured his father, President Donald J. Trump, throwing a sex toy off the roof of the White House onto a court of women's basketball players. 'Posted without further comment,' the younger Trump said, adding three crying laughing emojis. Beginning on July 29, three neon green sex toys have been thrown onto WNBA courts. At Tuesday night's New York Liberty game, an X video shows a similar object confiscated in the stands. Other social media users claimed there was an attempt to throw one at the Phoenix Mercury game, which was being played at the same time of the Sparks' contest. During Tuesday's livestream, there was also talk of someone throwing another toy at the Seattle Storm's Climate Pledge Arena during Tuesday's game against the Minnesota Lynx, though no incident occurred, a Storm spokesperson confirmed to The Athletic. It appears as if the crypto memecoin community, Green Dildo Coin, is behind the latest wave of WNBA incidents. On Tuesday night's livestream, members acknowledged the communication they have with those throwing the sex toys at WNBA arenas. 'I just got confirmation L.A. is out of the building,' one member of the stream said around seven minutes after the sex toy landed on the court, indicating the person who threw it fled without being apprehended. 'There are community members out there putting their f—ing lives on the line, so the least you can do is retweet,' the same member said as the act was beginning to go viral on social media. 'The potential tosser (in Seattle), if you will, lost his phone in Lake Washington, so I had to reach out to a friend who was able to get me in contact, and he's all set now,' another member of the stream said of the potential incident at Tuesday's Storm game. A league source told The Athletic that the WNBA is aware of the Green Dildo Coin's recent X stream. Advertisement Last week, a 23-year-old Georgia man was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, public indecency/indecent exposure and criminal trespass, according to Clayton County's court system, days after the first of these incidents. Messages shared on the stream and in the community's Telegram chat suggest that those directly involved in the Green Dildo Coin community were not aware of Delbert Carver before his arrest, although members of the community were alerted to watch the Atlanta Dream-Golden State Valkyries game on July 29. 'Obviously, that was not anybody in the community,' said one member on Tuesday's stream. 'I didn't want to give it any credit, but I was kind of thinking we could go and pay that guy's bail, and just say, like you know what, we support green dildo throwers.' The WNBA said in a statement Saturday that anyone throwing an object onto the court would be immediately ejected, is subject to a one-year ban and could face arrest and prosecution by local authorities. 'The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans,' the league said. An 18-year-old man, Kaden Lopez, was arrested while at Tuesday's Mercury game after police said he threw a sex toy toward the seats in front of him, hitting a man and his 9-year-old niece. Sergeant Phil Krynsky, a spokesperson for the Phoenix Police Department, confirmed Lopez's arrest in a statement to The Athletic. The identities of those who originated Green Dildo Coin are unclear, though the domain of the memecoin's website was registered on July 19, according to an internet domain lookup service. Memecoins, according to Christian Grewell, an expert on blockchain and cryptocurrency technology at New York University, 'cost almost nothing to make, essentially they're free, but they can generate millions in profits within days.' Advertisement The community also has an online storefront, which sells apparel related to the sex toy and memecoin, which was registered on July 7, close to two weeks before the first sex toy was thrown onto a WNBA court. Green Dildo Coin launched its account on X on July 28, with its apparent founder, Lt. Daldo Raine, voicing a nearly 15-minute speech — spoofing the opening speech of Brad Pitt's character, Lt. Aldo Raine, in Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglorious Bastards' — in which he explains the purpose of the memecoin. The WNBA is not explicitly mentioned in opening comments, though Raine said that 'evidence of our cruelty' would be found in the 'giant green, aggressive, and erect candles we leave behind.' In multiple livestreams listened to by The Athletic, members routinely voiced crude humor about the WNBA. Jokes were made about WNBA viewership, and memes circulated in the community's telegram often juxtaposed the sex toy into the hands of WNBA players. 'The attention we created for a ($40) dildo and ($140) seats is next level,' said one of the aforementioned members of the community on the stream. 'This is empowering to every f—ing crypto community to start thinking outside the box. Get creative and do something that makes people actually laugh. Memecoins should make you laugh. Memes should make you laugh. 'This is a movement to me to empower the average f—ing teacher. I don't care if you have 100,000 followers or 10 followers. Your f—ing posts matter, they have the ability to go viral, as long as they're actually f—ing funny.' The incidents appeared to change the trading prices of $DILDO. According to the coingecko cryptocurrency website, it has a trading volume of more than $1.5 million between Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. Polymarket, a cryptocurrency-based prediction model, also took bets on whether disruptions would occur. The site reported that it took in more than $180,000 in volume on whether a sex toy would be thrown at a game by Aug. 10. Users of the platform can also trade on the specific day another sex toy will be thrown on. 'The dildo-throwing incidents were essentially an excuse for bad actors to hijack existing negativity and convert it into attention,' Grewell wrote in an email to The Athletic. Advertisement Raine, the spokesperson of the group, told USA Today that the disruption using sex toys at WNBA games is likely done, but that the pranks wouldn't stop. A photo circulated online, and in the community's Telegram chat, of a spectator holding a green sex toy at Wednesday night's Miami Marlins game. 'If we're too disruptive for too long, people will get pissed off,' a member said Tuesday on stream. 'The bigger events, we gotta find creative ways to like trick the cameras onto us and then, f—ing bingo.' WNBA players and coaches have voiced their displeasure with the incidents and asked for consideration of player safety. After the second incident, which occurred in Chicago last Friday, Sky center Elizabeth Williams said it was 'super disrespectful' and 'really immature.' 'It's ridiculous, it's dumb, it's stupid,' Sparks coach Lynne Roberts said. The Athletic's Matt Moret contributed to this report. (Photo of Sophie Cunningham: Sean M.
