New York City mayor Eric Adams says two people have died after a Mexican navy tall ship hit the Brooklyn Bridge.
The sailing ship, which was about to leave New York for a goodwill tour to Iceland, struck the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night, snapping its three masts, injuring crew members and leaving some dangling from harnesses high in the air waiting for help.

Carl Frampton pays tribute following death of former opponent's father
Tributes have been pouring in from around the boxing world following the death of Jose Santa Cruz, with Carl Frampton among those to pay his respects. The father and trainer of retired world champion Leo Santa Cruz, who Frampton fought twice during his career, passed away at the age of 65 this week after a battle with cancer. He oversaw his son win world titles at bantamweight, junior featherweight and featherweight. Paying tribute, Frampton wrote online: "Saddened to hear of the passing of Jose Santa Cruz. My thoughts go out to Leo and the rest of his family. RIP." The Belfast man defeated Leo Santa Cruz by majority decision in July 2016 to claim the WBA featherweight title in a fight of the year contender in Brooklyn before the Mexican beat Frampton in a rematch six months later in Las Vegas. Jose Santa Cruz spoke about battling stage-three myeloma – bone cancer of the spine - ahead of the first fight between his son and Frampton. He told the Los Angeles Times in July 2016: "Cancer's a tough disease, but we're going to face it straight on. I'm still on medication, but on the day of the fight, I'll be there." WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman also paid tribute, writing on X: "I'm deeply saddened by the passing of Don Jose Santa Cruz after a ferocious battle against cancer. He is now in a better place and will always be remembered as a great boxing man, a family champions loved by everyone. Our condolences and solidarity to Leo and siblings and his wife during this difficult times." Premier Boxing Champions, Leo's one-time promoters, commented: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jose Santa Cruz, beloved father and trainer of former world champion Leo Santa Cruz. Born in 1958, Jose was the heart of Team Santa Cruz—an unwavering presence in his son's corner and a true fighter in his own right. Our thoughts are with the Santa Cruz family during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Jose." The WBA posted: "The WBA mourns the passing of Jose Santa Cruz, father and trainer of our former champion Leo Santa Cruz. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time."

A Mexican navy training ship which was visiting New York crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge, killing two people in the early hours of Sunday morning. Two crew members aboard the Cuauhtémoc sailing ship died when the boat – heading backwards towards the bridge – continued to travel to a point of impact. Its 45-metre masts were too tall to clear the arched bridge at that point and toppled when the vessel travelled underneath the iconic US landmark. Investigation opened into why ship collided with famous bridge leaving two dead
US transportation officials have launched an investigation into why a Mexican navy tall ship hit the Brooklyn Bridge in a collision that snapped the vessel's three masts, killed two crew members and left some sailors dangling from harnesses high in the air. The ship, called the Cuauhtemoc, was visiting New York on a global goodwill tour when the accident occurred on Saturday evening. The vessel could be seen in multiple videos travelling swiftly in reverse toward the bridge near the Brooklyn side of the East River. Then its three masts struck the bridge and snapped, one by one, as the ship kept moving. The Cuauhtemoc sits docked on Sunday after the deadly collision (Yuki Iwamura/AP) It was unclear what caused the ship to veer off course. The National Transportation Safety Board announced that it was sending a team to investigate. Investigators were expected to arrive Sunday afternoon. New York City mayor Eric Adams said the 142-year-old bridge escaped major damage, but at least 19 people aboard the ship needed medical treatment. Two of the four people who suffered serious injuries later died, Mr Adams announced on social media. Videos showed heavy traffic on the span at the time of the 8.20pm collision. No one on the bridge was hurt. The vessel, which was flying a giant Mexican flag and had 277 people aboard, then drifted into a pier on the riverbank as onlookers scrambled away. Sailors could be seen aloft in the rigging on the damaged masts but, remarkably, no one fell into the water, officials said. The Mexican navy said in a post on the social platform X that the Cuauhtemoc was a training vessel. It said a total of 22 people were injured. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum lamented the loss of the two crew members. 'Our solidarity and support go out to their families,' Ms Sheinbaum said on X. Traffic was halted on the bridge after the collision but was allowed to resume after an inspection, city officials said.
