Why this may be the right time to buy iPhones from China
If you're planning to buy an iPhone without breaking the bank, your best bet may be to find someone heading to China.
Apple
has reportedly boosted its trade-in discounts there, aiming to revive demand in a key market where its sales have recently taken a hit. According to a report by news agency Reuters, Apple is offering additional trade-in discounts for new iPhones in China until June 18.
The company's website now advertises trade-in credits ranging from 1,325 yuan (approx. $184 or Rs 15,700) for an iPhone 12 to 5,700 yuan (approx. $790 or Rs 67,300) for an iPhone 15 Pro Max. For reference, a new iPhone 15 Pro Max starts at 7,999 yuan (approx Rs 94,600) in China. This follows a previous promotion in January during the Lunar New Year shopping season, which offered discounts of up to 500 yuan (approx. $69) on the iPhone 16 Pro.
This initiative comes as Apple's market share in China saw a reduction to 13.7% in the March quarter of 2024, down from 15.6% in the same period last year, as per an IDC report. Shipments for the quarter also decreased to 9.8 million units from 10.8 million year-over-year, marking a 9% annual decline.
Concurrently, domestic rival Xiaomi led the market with an 18.6% share, followed by Huawei (18%), Oppo (15.7%), and Vivo (14.4%). Xiaomi reported a 40% annual growth in shipments during the quarter ending March.

Pollution control body clears construction of Radio Club jetty near Gateway of India
A week after the Supreme Court refused to stall the construction of a passenger jetty at Radio Club near Gateway of India, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) on Wednesday granted approval for its construction The MPCB conveyed this in its letter to the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB). State's Ports Minister Nitesh Rane said, 'The government is taking firm and definitive steps towards the completion of the project.' The Rs 229-crore project to develop a passenger jetty and a terminal building at Radio Club near the Gateway of India in Mumbai has drawn flak from Colaba residents who cited damage to the heritage precinct and the increased traffic congestion. According to the local residents, illegal parking is already rampant, with parking along both sides of the Prem Ramchandani Marg between Radio Club and Gateway of India. With the increase in hawkers and vehicular flow in the precinct, residents have aired concerns over the likelihood of heavier traffic jams and inaccessibility to tourists. Opposing the project, several residents had approached the Bombay High Court. Last month, the court had refused to grant an interim stay on construction. While refusing to entertain a plea seeking a stay on the construction, the Supreme Court, too, on May 27, noted that the matter is pending before the Bombay High Court. 'We are not inclined to entertain the matter since the HC has already fixed it for hearing on June 16. However, we would request the HC to take up the matter and decide the same as expeditiously as possible, preferably prior to the end of monsoon 2025,' the order stated. In a bid to uplift the existing facilities at Gateway of India, which is a hub for significant boat traffic, the MMB is slated to develop a new passenger jetty and a terminal near the iconic landmark in Colaba. Expected to be completed within 30 months, the new jetty is expected to reroute all boat traffic from the Gateway of India, in what is pegged to reduce existing congestion as well as upgrade the old facilities. The new jetty will have the capacity to accommodate up to 20 boats at a time, allowing for smoother and more organised operations. Meanwhile, the terminal building will span 80 square metres and will have a 350-person capacity amphitheatre, a berthing jetty, an approach jetty, a fire safety system, and CCTV, besides gardening and beautification works.

Crucial works gather pace to make 4 lanes on Hadapsar-Dive Ghat highway in Pune
Pune: Works to make four lanes on the Hadapsar to Dive Ghat road, part of the Palkhi Marg project, have gathered pace. The road widening activity is crucial since not only will it cater to traffic towards prominent towns like Jejuri and Pandharpur, but ease access from Pune city to the proposed Purandar airport — located ahead of Saswad. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has undertaken construction of bridges across the entire 14km-long Dive Ghat stretch which is being widened. The existing two-lane road from Hadapsar to Saswad has been insufficient to handle increasing traffic, especially in the ghat section. Frequent commuters have complained of severe traffic congestion due to the narrow carriageway. Increase in traffic along the stretch is anticipated in the coming years, especially since the state govt is standing firm on its decision to build the airport ahead of Saswad in the Purandar area. Commuters said the stretch from Hadapsar to Saswad has remained neglected over the last many years, despite the heavy traffic. The road was considered for widening only recently and gained importance since it will be the main access road to the proposed airport in Purandar. They said work must be completed at the earliest without unnecessary delays. The ghat has the hill on one side and a gorge on the other. Officials said barricades are installed at all locations where blasting and widening are underway. Traffic is suspended for the period when the blasting, usually planned in the afternoon, takes place since the traffic flow is comparatively less. Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari flagged off the road widening last year. In Dec 2023, the Centre sanctioned a fund of Rs793 crore for the plan. Meanwhile, the Palkhi Marg project has reached the last stage of construction work. Box: Clear encroachment to avoid traffic snarls: Local residents Local residents of areas like Hadapsar, Bhekrainagar, Phursungi, Uruli Devachi and Wadaki, which are located along the Hadapsar-Dive Ghat road, said the administration should clear encroachments along with the widening work. Mahesh Bhadale, a local resident, said there are chronic congestion spots — such as Bhekrainagar, Phursungi and Mantarwadi junction — where the administration should construct flyovers. The work should be included in the ongoing road widening of Palkhi Marg.

Lloyds' Surjagarh mine set to be the first ‘green mine' of India
Gadchiroli: The Surjagarh iron ore mine (SIOM) of Lloyds Metals and Energy Ltd (LMEL) in Maharashra's Gadchiroli district is set to become the first 'green mine' in India, thanks to environment-friendly initiatives and strong focus on reducing carbon footprint in mining operations. SIOM has already achieved an annual reduction of 32,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, said top company sources. Once the company transitions to renewable energy, this saving is likely to increase to around 50,000 tonnes annually through innovation, green technology in mining operations from drilling to dispatch. LMEL's decarbonisation of Surjagarh mine encompasses every aspect of mining operations, from drilling and loading to hauling and logistics. "Our core philosophy revolves around adopting green technology, improving efficiency, fostering innovation, and engaging employees and the local community in pursuit of 'green steel' production. This aligns perfectly with India's 'Net Zero' commitment. It has reduced carbon footprint in iron ore transportation by introducing an 87km-long slurry pipeline from the grinding plant at Hedri to the pellet plant at Konsari. The laying and testing of the pipeline from the grinding plant at Surjagarh iron ore mines to Konsari has been completed. The slurry pipeline represents green logistics adopted by LMEL in its commitment to environment, sustainability, and responsible industrial operations. "The commissioning of the slurry pipeline marks the first such project in India after 11 years. This will be the fourth operational iron ore slurry pipeline in the nation and a first in Maharashtra," said Prabhakaran. The pipeline has a dual advantage -- lower freight cost and reduced carbon footprint. Under LMEL's 'Mission Green' initiative, inspired by the vision of producing 'green steel', over 3 lakh trees have been planted at various locations, and thousands of saplings have been distributed to people. In line with forest clearance conditions, LMEL allocated 377.58 hectares of private land in Arvi and Karanja talukas of Wardha district for compensatory afforestation, in lieu of 374.90 hectares diverted for Surjagarh iron ore mine. LMEL deposited Rs 2.49 crore with the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority and 3lakh native saplings were planted by the State Forest Department in Arvi taluka. Also, Surjagarh is poised to become the largest green fleet mining operation in the country, with its own electric vehicle charging station, said a top company official. Building upon the success in non-fossil fuel operations at its Surjagarh Iron Ore Mine, LMEL is now focusing on Banded Hematite Quartzite, which was historically considered a waste in iron ore mining. The initiative will transform waste into a valuable resource, thus contributing to national waste reduction and wealth creation.
