Crucial works gather pace to make 4 lanes on Hadapsar-Dive Ghat highway in Pune

Time of India2 days ago

Pune: Works to make four lanes on the Hadapsar to Dive Ghat road, part of the Palkhi Marg project, have gathered pace.
The road widening activity is crucial since not only will it cater to traffic towards prominent towns like Jejuri and Pandharpur, but ease access from Pune city to the proposed Purandar airport — located ahead of Saswad.
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has undertaken construction of bridges across the entire 14km-long Dive Ghat stretch which is being widened.
The existing two-lane road from Hadapsar to Saswad has been insufficient to handle increasing traffic, especially in the ghat section. Frequent commuters have complained of severe traffic congestion due to the narrow carriageway. Increase in traffic along the stretch is anticipated in the coming years, especially since the state govt is standing firm on its decision to build the airport ahead of Saswad in the Purandar area.
Commuters said the stretch from Hadapsar to Saswad has remained neglected over the last many years, despite the heavy traffic. The road was considered for widening only recently and gained importance since it will be the main access road to the proposed airport in Purandar. They said work must be completed at the earliest without unnecessary delays.
Local resident Vishal Raskar said widening of the ghat section and the stretch to Hadapsar will reduce travel time considerably.

While the local traffic police department has introduced small diversions to manage the traffic, the NHAI has been carrying out controlled blasting in the ghat section to make space to add two more lanes to the existing carriageway. The ghat has the hill on one side and a gorge on the other.
Officials said barricades are installed at all locations where blasting and widening are underway. Traffic is suspended for the period when the blasting, usually planned in the afternoon, takes place since the traffic flow is comparatively less.
Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari flagged off the road widening last year. In Dec 2023, the Centre sanctioned a fund of Rs793 crore for the plan. Meanwhile, the Palkhi Marg project has reached the last stage of construction work.
Box:
Clear encroachment to avoid traffic snarls: Local residents
Local residents of areas like Hadapsar, Bhekrainagar, Phursungi, Uruli Devachi and Wadaki, which are located along the Hadapsar-Dive Ghat road, said the administration should clear encroachments along with the widening work. Mahesh Bhadale, a local resident, said there are chronic congestion spots — such as Bhekrainagar, Phursungi and Mantarwadi junction — where the administration should construct flyovers.
The work should be included in the ongoing road widening of Palkhi Marg.

Devina Mehra on Trump-Musk spat, China's chip market manipulation

Devina Mehra , Founder & CMD, First Global , says Elon Musk 's recent call for Trump's impeachment, despite past support, signals escalating tensions. Concerns arise about Musk's government involvement and data access. The EV industry faces chip supply risks, particularly China's dominance in strategic resources globally. Due to volatility and news dependence, Tesla is considered a high-risk stock and is not held in global funds. I guess the big headline has been the spat or breakup between Elon Musk and Donald Trump and what a costly one it turned out to be. Having said that, what do you suspect could be the ramifications because Musk has even called for Trump's impeachment? Devina Mehra: I just posted on that and yes, this was a plot twist that was very predictable. So, any couple's counsellor would have told them that this was not going to last. Even if in today's America they have gone to their church pastor also, they would have been told that. So what has happened is very predictable. Two people like them were not going to make it. Till two days ago, Elon Musk found only good things about Trump and now he is calling for impeachment and saying such ingratitude after all the money I spent on your campaign, you have forgotten about it! So, yes, it is going to get uglier. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bank Owned Properties For Sale In An Phu (Prices May Surprise You) Foreclosed Homes | Search ads Search Now Remember Elon Musk was not born in the US. He is an immigrant and he still holds on to his South African citizenship and a Canadian citizenship as well. There are many things that could happen. Let us see how it pans out. But I do not think this is bad news as such for markets because I do not think whatever Musk was doing within the government was something which was very desirable. It was just getting access to a lot of government data and also slashing a lot of things without understanding what they were really doing. So, I do not think that him leaving the government is a negative thing for the US. But like you have said, this is meant to become more sour in the days to come. What impact could this have on some sectors that are heavily reliant because we have also seen a 14% crash coming in on Tesla's stock and with everything that is going on around, and the rare earth deal with China. Trump has very clearly said he is not going to entertain questions on that. Now, he is someone who is not going to turn down talking about a topic unless it is sorted in his head. So, where do you believe this narrative is headed and how could this shape the global EV space ? Devina Mehra: Let us see how it goes. That is a risk area for a lot of the EVs in the world for a number of things. We saw in India recently that the only supplier effectively is China or China controlled entities because China has very strategically controlled a lot of areas and not just in Asia and Africa. I read in some books that they have been there right from South America to the Arctic circle. So, wherever they think there is strategic raw material or other strategic goods, they have been there. It is a risk area for the EV industry. Tesla as such, we have not held in our global funds for a while now because it is too volatile and too unpredictable a stock, and too dependent on news. We have steered clear off it as it is a high-risk stock in our category. You Might Also Like: The Trump-Musk rift: All that you need to know Tesla is being eaten alive by Chinese rivals it inspired

RBI takes up slasher in hand for frontloading rate cuts to push 3D India

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cut its key repo rate by a larger-than-expected 50 basis points on Friday, a third consecutive reduction, and slashed the reserve ratio for banks as muted inflation provided space for policymakers to focus on supporting economic growth. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) cut the repo rate to 5.50%. It has now cut rates by 100 basis points in 2025, starting with a quarter-point reduction in February, its first cut since May 2020. The RBI also cut the cash reserve ratio by 100 basis points to 3%, adding to already surplus liquidity. The central bank at the same time changed its monetary policy stance to 'neutral' from accommodative, with the governor saying further action will depend on incoming data. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 물금읍: 노인을 위한 치과 임플란트 비용은 당신을 놀라게 할 것입니다 치과 임플란트 | 검색광고 더 알아보기 Undo ALSO READ: RBI MPC Meeting GDP Forecast: India's central bank retains growth forecast at 6.5% Now, under the current circumstances, monetary policy is left with "very limited space" to support growth, said Governor Sanjay Malhotra while announcing the MPC decision. Live Events With a jumbo repo rate cut and a boost to banking liquidity via CRR cut plan the RBI has done the heavy-lifting, weeks after announcing record dividend payout of Rs 2.68 lakh crore to New Delhi, which may now need to ramp up fiscal measures to shore up economic growth for Asia's third-largest economy. The double-barreled monetary bazooka also sent the Sensex soaring over 800 points and catapulted the Nifty Bank to a fresh record high of 56,644. ALSO READ: RBI MPC opts for a 'jumbo' rate cut to bring repo rate down to 5.5%, switches to neutral gear 'Frontloading' of growth plan The inflation outlook for the year has been revised downwards from the earlier forecast of 4.0 per cent to 3.7 per cent. GDP forecast for FY2025-26 was retained at 6.5% by the central bank. Growth, "remains lower than our aspirations" amidst challenging global environment and heightened uncertainty, said the Governor. The changed growth-inflation dynamics calls for not only continuing with the policy easing but also "frontloading the rate cuts to support growth," Malhotra said. Accordingly, the MPC voted to reduce the policy repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.50 per cent, he added. ALSO READ: RBI to cut CRR by 100 bps in four tranches to boost liquidity, effective Sept "MPC will be carefully assessing the incoming data and the evolving outlook to chart out the future course of monetary policy in order to strike the right growth-inflation balance. The fast-changing global economic situation too necessitates continuous monitoring and assessment." The near-term and medium-term outlook now gives RBI the confidence of not only a durable alignment of headline inflation with the target of 4 per cent, as exuded in the last meeting but also the belief that during the year, it is likely to undershoot the target at the margin, Malhotra said. The MPC surprised markets by frontloading policy easing measures, with the strong liquidity impetus in the run-up already adding a de facto rate reduction, in addition to the 50bp cut in the benchmark rate, opined Radhika Rao, Executive Director and Senior Economist at DBS Bank. The policy committee provided a "double-barrelled boost" by undertaking a 50bp rate cut as well as a durable liquidity infusion via the CRR cut, tapping into the window of below-target inflation this quarter, she added. RBI's formula for 3D India Governor Malhotra gave a 5x3x3 formula for the 3D Indian economy that presents a picture of 'strength, stability, and opportunity.' The governor said: First, strength comes from the strong balance sheets of the five major sectors - corporates, banks, households, government, and the external sector. Second, there is stability on all three fronts – price, financial, and political – providing policy and economic certainty in this dynamically evolving global economic order. Third, the Indian economy offers immense opportunities to investors through 3Ds – demography, digitalisation and domestic demand. This 5x3x3 matrix of fundamentals provides the necessary core strength to cushion the Indian economy against global spillovers and propel it to grow at a faster pace, Malhotra added. India's Growth inflation dynamics India's GDP rose to a four-quarter high of 7.4% in the three months to March from a year earlier, as per data released by the government last week. For the fiscal year ended March, the economy expanded 6.5%. During 2025-26 so far, domestic economic activity has exhibited resilience and agriculture sector remains strong, RBI governor noted. Moreover, Industrial activity is "gaining gradually, even though the pace of recovery is uneven." Services sector is expected to maintain momentum, the central bank said "On the demand side, private consumption, the mainstay of aggregate demand, remains healthy, with a gradual rise in discretionary spending. Rural demand remains steady, while urban demand is improving. Investment activity is reviving as reflected by high-frequency indicators." Meanwhile, the outlook for inflation points towards "benign prices" across major constituents. The record wheat production and higher production of key pulses in the Rabi crop season should ensure adequate supply of key food items, the Governor said. Going forward, the likely above normal monsoon along with its early onset "augurs well" for Kharif crop prospects. "Reflecting this, inflation expectations are showing a moderating trend, more so for the rural households." Although, RBI has warned that the country needs to remain watchful of weather-related uncertainties and still evolving tariff related concerns with their attendant impact on global commodity prices.

Elon Musk's SpaceX faces $22 billion contract threat amid feud with Trump: What it means for US Space program

A heated exchange between Elon Musk and US president Donald Trump on social media has cast a shadow over SpaceX's vital role in the US space programme. On Thursday, after Trump threatened to cut government contracts to Musk's SpaceX and its Starlink satellite services, Musk replied on X (formerly Twitter) that SpaceX would 'begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately.' The Dragon capsule is crucial for ferrying astronauts and cargo to the International Space Station (ISS). Hours later, Musk appeared to ease tensions, tweeting, 'Good advice. Ok, we won't decommission Dragon,' after a follower urged both men to cool off. But the incident highlighted how fragile the relationship between the government and one of its most important contractors has become. Why the Dragon capsule matters SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft is the only current US system capable of transporting crews to and from the ISS. It carries up to four astronauts and handles essential cargo shipments, keeping the orbiting lab supplied and operational. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Honor a Forgotten Father Today HelpAge India Donate Now Undo Boeing's competing Starliner capsule has faced setbacks, including a failed test flight last year that forced astronauts to return to Earth aboard a SpaceX Dragon. Starliner remains grounded as NASA considers a new cargo test flight before resuming crewed missions. The Dragon also supports private missions. Axiom Space, a Houston-based company, plans to use a Dragon capsule next week for its own commercial flight, signalling the capsule's expanding role beyond NASA. Live Events NASA's reliance on SpaceX—and Russia The US relies heavily on SpaceX but still depends on Russia's Soyuz capsules as a backup. Soyuz can carry three people at a time and currently ferries two Russians and one NASA astronaut per launch. In return, SpaceX carries a Russian cosmonaut on its missions under a barter agreement to ensure both nations maintain crew access to the ISS. SpaceX's first crew launch for NASA in 2020 marked the first orbital flight by a private company. It reduced NASA's costly dependence on Russian flights, which had charged tens of millions of dollars per seat for years. NASA also uses Russian spacecraft and the US contractor Northrop Grumman for cargo deliveries. SpaceX's expanding government role Beyond crew transport, SpaceX has launched multiple science missions for NASA and military equipment for the Pentagon . It won a NASA contract last year to help safely deorbit the ISS when its mission ends. SpaceX's Starship rocket is NASA's choice to ferry astronauts from lunar orbit to the moon's surface during upcoming Artemis missions . However, its ninth test flight last week ended in a crash after the rocket tumbled out of control over Texas. $22 Billion at stake SpaceX holds around $22 billion in government contracts, covering key NASA and Pentagon projects. Trump claimed ending federal support to Musk's ventures would save 'billions and billions of dollars.' The spat began after Trump criticised Musk's spending preferences and withdrew backing for billionaire private astronaut Jared Isaacman, accusing him of being 'totally Democrat.' Reports suggest Trump is considering retired Air Force Lieutenant General Steven Kwast, a space defence advocate, to lead NASA. This would signal a shift from Musk's innovation-focused approach to one prioritising national security. Budget cuts and political uncertainty Trump's proposed budget aims to cut dozens of science initiatives and halt Artemis moon missions after the third launch, clashing with Musk's Mars ambitions that were once central to Trump's space agenda. Despite this, the Senate Commerce Committee has pushed back, releasing a budget bill that restores funding for Artemis missions four and five and commits at least $1 billion annually to NASA's Space Launch System rocket through 2029. Whether Trump accepts these provisions remains to be seen, and the outcome will show how much influence Musk still wields over the US space programme. SpaceX dominates government space contracts with about $15 billion secured for Falcon 9 and Starship launches, along with Pentagon satellite missions. The company is also developing a classified US intelligence satellite network and a military version of Starlink called Starshield. SpaceX's Starlink rivals, EchoStar and AST SpaceMobile, saw shares rise 16% and 8% respectively amid the Musk-Trump dispute, as investors bet on alternative satellite networks gaining ground. Other players like Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin, and Amazon's Project Kuiper are also developing technology that could eventually challenge SpaceX's role. Project Kuiper expects enough satellites in orbit this year to begin offering services, including to the US government. Former NASA deputy administrator Lori Garver criticised the situation, saying, 'A rogue CEO threatening to decommission spacecraft, putting astronauts' lives at risk, is untenable.' She also noted that cancelling SpaceX contracts would likely be illegal but acknowledged the overall turmoil is 'troubling.'
