Devina Mehra on Trump-Musk spat, China's chip market manipulation
, Founder & CMD,
First Global
, says
Elon Musk
's recent call for Trump's impeachment, despite past support, signals escalating tensions. Concerns arise about Musk's government involvement and data access. The EV industry faces chip supply risks, particularly China's dominance in strategic resources globally. Due to volatility and news dependence, Tesla is considered a high-risk stock and is not held in global funds.
I guess the big headline has been the spat or breakup between Elon Musk and
Donald Trump
and what a costly one it turned out to be. Having said that, what do you suspect could be the ramifications because Musk has even called for Trump's impeachment?
Devina Mehra:
I just posted on that and yes, this was a plot twist that was very predictable. So, any couple's counsellor would have told them that this was not going to last. Even if in today's America they have gone to their church pastor also, they would have been told that. So what has happened is very predictable. Two people like them were not going to make it. Till two days ago, Elon Musk found only good things about Trump and now he is calling for impeachment and saying such ingratitude after all the money I spent on your campaign, you have forgotten about it! So, yes, it is going to get uglier.

Remember Elon Musk was not born in the US. He is an immigrant and he still holds on to his South African citizenship and a Canadian citizenship as well. There are many things that could happen. Let us see how it pans out. But I do not think this is bad news as such for markets because I do not think whatever Musk was doing within the government was something which was very desirable. It was just getting access to a lot of government data and also slashing a lot of things without understanding what they were really doing. So, I do not think that him leaving the government is a negative thing for the US.
But like you have said, this is meant to become more sour in the days to come. What impact could this have on some sectors that are heavily reliant because we have also seen a 14% crash coming in on Tesla's stock and with everything that is going on around, and the rare earth deal with China. Trump has very clearly said he is not going to entertain questions on that. Now, he is someone who is not going to turn down talking about a topic unless it is sorted in his head. So, where do you believe this narrative is headed and how could this shape the
global EV space
?
Devina Mehra:
Let us see how it goes. That is a risk area for a lot of the EVs in the world for a number of things. We saw in India recently that the only supplier effectively is China or China controlled entities because China has very strategically controlled a lot of areas and not just in Asia and Africa. I read in some books that they have been there right from South America to the Arctic circle.
So, wherever they think there is strategic raw material or other strategic goods, they have been there. It is a risk area for the EV industry. Tesla as such, we have not held in our global funds for a while now because it is too volatile and too unpredictable a stock, and too dependent on news. We have steered clear off it as it is a high-risk stock in our category.

Canada's Conservatives urge Ottawa to label Lawrence Bishnoi gang a terror group
Toronto: The principal opposition party in Canada has called upon the Federal government to designate the Lawrence Bishnoi gang as a terror outfit. A new Canadian citizen takes a flag during a citizenship ceremony at Canada Place on Canada Day in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on Tuesday. (Bloomberg) In a post on X, on Monday, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre stated, 'Liberal open borders immigration allowed Bishnoi terrorists and gangsters to come to Canada and terrorise our communities. Conservatives call: Ban the Bishnoi terrorists; arrest and deport all its members now.' His post followed a letter that was sent by Conservative MP Frank Caputo to Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree, on Monday. Caputo, the party's critic (or shadow minister) for public safety, wrote, 'I implore you to list the Bishnoi Gang as a terrorist entity to provide law enforcement and all levels of government with the tools necessary to address the Gang's activities. The designation would permit the government to push back against the Gang with financial, criminal and property sanctions.' In July, the leader of the Canadian province of Alberta joined her British Columbia counterpart in calling upon the Federal Government fur such a designation. In a statement, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and the province's Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis had said, 'The Lawrence Bishnoi Gang is a transnational criminal network responsible for violence, extortion, drug trafficking and targeted killings, including here in Canada. Its reach is global, and its intent is criminal and violent.' They added that the formal designation of the Bishnoi gang as a terror organisation 'will unlock critical powers, allowing provincial and municipal-level law enforcement agencies to access the necessary tools and resources needed to effectively disrupt operations and protect our people.' BC Premier David Eby had made a similar request to Ottawa in June. Last month, responding to questions from media, Canada's Minister for Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree said a 'legal threshold' had to met for such a designation but the matter was under consideration of the country's law enforcement agencies. The Bishnoi gang has been linked to extortion attempts in Ontario, BC and Alberta. However, earlier this month, the outlet CBC News reported that arrests made in Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, in relation to an extortion series there were of persons associated with the Brothers Keepers gang, which originated in BC. India has also sought action against members of the Bishnoi gang operating from Canada including Satinderjeet Singh, better known as Goldy Brar, who is wanted in connection with the murder of entertainer and politician Sidhu Moose Wala in May 2022. In 2022, India flagged to Canada its concerns over 'translocational and transnational' gangs operating in its territory. Investigative agencies also exchanged information about seven Indian gang leaders based in Canada directing gang activity in India and their growing nexus with pro-Khalistan elements.

India falls from top to least favoured Asian stock market in 3 months amid Trump's tariff concerns: BofA Survey
(Bloomberg) -- India has gone from fund managers' top Asian stock market pick to their least preferred in just three months amid US President Donald Trump's tariff escalation, according to a Bank of America Corp. survey. In the most recent fund manager survey, 30% said they are underweight on India, followed by 20% for Thailand and 10% for Malaysia. Japan fared the best, with China taking the No. 2 spot. A total of 99 panelists with $183 billion of assets responded to the survey's regional questions. That marks a sharp reversal from May's survey, which showed India displacing Japan as the most favored market due to its perceived haven status during Trump's initial tariff rollout. The change in sentiment for the $5.2 trillion equity market underscores growing investor concern about Trump's decision to double levies on the South Asian country's goods as a penalty for its purchases of Russian oil. 'India is affected by President Trump's announcement of 50% tariffs,' strategists including Ritesh Samadhiya wrote in a Aug. 12 note. That contrasts with other markets in the region including China, where the tone has 'become more enthusiastic.' Trade angst, weak earnings and expensive valuations have prompted global funds to withdraw about $4 billion from Indian shares this quarter, though domestic institutions and retail investors have ramped up purchases. The nation's stocks-focused mutual funds, which get the bulk of their flows from individual traders, pulled in a record 427 billion rupees ($4.9 billion) on a net basis in July, data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India showed. Still, Indian stocks registered their worst weekly losing streak since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic last week, and have lagged major Asian peers this year. Chinese shares outperformed their Indian counterparts by about eight percentage points in July — the most since February. 'Trump's harsh tariffs and the straining of relations between US and India have impacted market sentiment,' said V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments. Tepid earnings growth and elevated valuations have 'emboldened the bears to increase the short positions,' he said.

Merge Labs aims to take on Neuralink with support from Sam Altman
OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, is reportedly planning to back a new company called Merge Labs that works on brain-computer technology. This tech lets the brain connect directly with computers. This new startup is expected to compete directly with Elon Musk's Neuralink, founded in 2016. Merge Labs aims to revolutionise brain-computer tech with support from OpenAI's Sam Altman.(AFP File) Neuralink has been working on brain implants since 2016 to help people with paralysis control devices with their thoughts. Merge Labs reportedly wants to go even further and the idea is to make the connection between humans and AI smoother and maybe even enhance human abilities beyond just medical needs. Merge Labs is still at a very early stage and is aiming for a valuation of about 850 million dollars and seeking 250 million dollars in funding. The money may come from OpenAI's investment arm. Sam Altman is also teaming up with Alex Blania who is working on another project focused on advanced biometrics for identity verification. There is one big difference between Neuralink and Merge Labs: Merge Labs is exploring less invasive brain implants, the ones that will not require major surgery and will make heavy use of artificial intelligence to improve how the technology works. Neuralink has already tested its implants in humans and reached a nine billion dollar valuation. The brain-computer interface field is making rapid progress. Recently, at the 2025 World Robot Championship in Beijing, teams demonstrated brain-controlled robots and drones that respond to brain signals in real time. In another breakthrough, scientists at UC Davis created a brain-computer system that turns brain signals into speech for a man with ALS giving him the ability to talk. This kind of technology can change rehabilitation, assistive tools and even make home automation easy through natural human-computer interaction. These innovations show that brain-computer technology is finally leaving the labs and moving toward real-world use and has the potential to help millions of people.
