Life sentence for college teacher who plotted sensational murder in Odisha
A local court in Odisha on Wednesday (May 28, 2025) sentenced Punjilal Meher, a college teacher, to rigorous life imprisonment for sending a parcel bomb to the home of a woman colleague who had been promoted ahead of him. The bomb, camouflaged as a wedding gift, exploded and killed two persons, including her newlywed son at Patnagarh in Balangir district on February 23, 2018.
The murder, infamously known as the Patnagarh parcel bomb case, shook the entire State and later went on to become plot of movies in multiple languages. What stunned everyone was the sheer incomprehensibility of the motive — a college teacher orchestrating a brutal murder simply because his woman colleague was appointed principal of a college he believed should have been his.
Additional District Judge, Patnagarh, Sonali Patnaik found him guilty under Sections 302, 307 and 201 of the IPC and Sections 3 and 4 of the Explosive Substances Act, 1908. After seven years of trial, the convict was sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 302 of the IPC and Section 3 of the Explosive Substances Act, 1908. He was also handed imprisonment of 10 years each separately and seven years on different counts. Total penalty imposed on him was ₹1.40 lakh. As many as 62 witnesses were examined, 100 numbers of documentary evidence and 51 material objects were submitted in the court.
The convict Meher, an English teacher, was in-charge principal of Jyoti Vikash College since 2009 and he felt threatened after senior lecturer Sanjukta Sahu became principal in 2014. Despite her seniority, he refused to step down, showed no respect, issued threats, and began creating controversies out of anger and jealousness. He began to hatch a plan to cause unimaginable pain to Ms. Sahu.
Ms. Sahu's only son, Soumya Sekhar Sahu, was working as an engineer at a Japanese electronics firm in Bengaluru. His wedding was solemnised on February 18, 2018, followed by a reception on February 20. As the family basked in the joy of the celebrations, a parcel arrived at their newly built home on February 23, 2018 — sent by Meher.
Believing it to be a wedding gift, Soumya opened the package out of curiosity. It exploded instantly. Soumya and his grandmother were killed in the blast, while his five-day-old wife Rima sustained grievous burn injuries.
Since there were no eyewitnesses to the tragic incident and no clues about who had sent the parcel, the Balangir district police investigation hit a dead end. However, when the Crime Branch of the Odisha Police took over, the case began to take a new direction.
'It was a blind case. We began the investigation based solely on circumstantial evidence — which, at the time, was virtually non-existent. The turning point came when a cryptic letter was sent to the Balangir Superintendent of Police, seemingly intended to mislead the investigation. But the letter, written in polished English, pointed us toward Meher,' said senior IPS officer Arun Bothra, who was leading the probe.
'Later, we collected scientific evidence and corroborated it through forensic analysis. During questioning, Meher himself admitted he had never imagined he would be caught. He had executed the murder plot with every possible precaution,' Mr. Bothra added.
The convict had learned to make bombs by watching YouTube videos and began collecting explosives from firecrackers purchased during Deepavali in 2017. Chitta Ranjan Kanungo, public prosecutor, said it was an extremely challenging trial, and the Crime Branch of the State Police had painstakingly gathered evidence that withstood judicial scrutiny. The parents of the deceased expressed satisfaction that the convict had been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Indore: 81-year-old retired school principal duped of Rs 1.02 crore through digital arrest
Indore (Madhya Pradesh) [India] June 2 (ANI): An 81-year-old retired school principal, Nandini Chiplunkar, has been duped of Rs 1.02 crores through a digital arrest scam. The scam involved fraudsters claiming to be from Mumbai's Colaba Police and CBI, alleging that Chiplunkar was involved in financial dealings with Naresh Goyal of Jet Airways and money laundering. According to Additional DCP of Crime Branch, Rajesh Dandotiya, on April 27, Chiplunkar received a call stating that her SIM would be deactivated. The fraudsters claimed that there were 267 FIRs against her and kept her under digital arrest for two days. They convinced her to deposit Rs 1 crore in a fake account in exchange for closing the case. While speaking to ANI on Monday, DCP Dandotiya said, 'On April 27th, Nandini, who retired as principal of Central School, received a call saying that her SIM was going to get said there was legal action being taken against her and there are 267 an FIRs against the night she was kept on digital arrest...' However, when Chiplunkar went to the bank to break her fixed deposit of Rs 50 lakhs, the bank manager suspected something was amiss and informed the Crime Branch. The officials intervened, and Chiplunkar was able to save her fixed deposit money. 'Next day they managed to convince her and she went to break her fixed deposit of Rs 50 lakhs... The bank manager realised that there is some trouble by looking at her face, he said that the server is down and asked her to come back next day and then the Bank Manager immediately informed I spoke to her and convinced that it was a fake call, and she was switched off her phone. But, after two days, she started receiving calls again. We met her and explained to her that such digital arrest calls are lost Rs 1.02 crores, but because the bank was alert, she didn't lose her fixed deposit money...', DCP Dandotiya added. The Crime Branch has taken Chiplunkar's complaint and is investigating the matter. No case has been filed yet, and the authorities are working to identify the accused. (ANI)

‘Don't Make West Bengal A North Korea': Kangana Urges Mamata Govt To Release Sharmishta Panoli
Kangana Ranuat has come out in strong support of law student Sharmishta Panoli who was arrested for her alleged communal remarks online. Bharatiya Janata Party MP Kangana Ranaut on Sunday urged the West Bengal government to release 22-year-old law student Sharmishta Panoli, who was arrested by Kolkata Police for her alleged communal remarks online. She said that the Mamata Banerjee government should not try to turn West Bengal into 'North Korea". The influencer, who was quite vocal during Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, used strong language against some Bollywood actors for their silence during India's military operation against terrorists on the other side of the border. She deleted the video on May 15 and issued an unconditional apology, however, the Kolkata Police arrested her from Gurugram on Friday based on a complaint. She was sent to 14-day judicial custody. 'Harassing someone in the name of law and order is not good. When someone has apologised and deleted the post, but putting her in prison, torturing her, ending her career, and raising questions on her character is very wrong. This should not happen with any daughter," Kangana told news agency ANI. 'I urge the West Bengal government not to try to make the state into North Korea. Everyone has democratic rights. She has apologised for her indecent remarks. She had said everything in general and today's generation uses such language very normally- both in English and in Hindi. She should be released soon because she is a very young woman. She has her whole career and life ahead of her," the actor added. Notably, North Korea is ruled by Kim Jong Un, a dictator. Since her arrest, the influencer has garnered online support and backing from several leaders, including from the BJP and the Netherlands. The BJP questioned Mamata over the 'quick action" by her police against Panoli ever after her apology and asked if the state police would arrest TMC leaders who made controversial remarks for the Hindu community. 'Sharmistha Panoli, just 22 years old, has been arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody over a video she had already deleted and publicly apologised for on May 15. There have been no reports of communal unrest linked to her remarks, yet the Kolkata Police is acting with uncharacteristic haste. This is no longer about law and order — it is about selective enforcement," BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya posted on X. First Published:
