Editors pick newsletter India repels Pak. strikes for second day

The Hindu10-05-2025

Blackout measures were put in place in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Rajasthan on Friday as Pakistan continued to violate Indian airspace for the second consecutive day. Sirens blared and areas on the western border went dark as Indian armed forces used air defence mechanisms to thwart armed drone and missile attacks from Pakistan. Drones, including suspected armed ones, were sighted at 26 locations ranging from Baramulla in J&K to Bhuj in Gujarat, the Indian Army said. Pakistan attempted drone intrusions at 36 locations from Leh to Sir Creek with approximately 300 to 400 drones on Thursday night, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh said at a media briefing on Friday. Pakistan also attempted to target the Bhatinda military station with an armed Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), which was 'detected and neutralised', she added. In response, Indian armed forces launched strikes on four air defence sites in Pakistan. An air defence radar was destroyed by one of them, Wing Commander Singh said. The drones were possibly of Turkish origin, likely to test Indian air defences, Wing Commander Singh said while accusing Pakistan of using civil airliners as a 'shield'.
An armed drone targeted a civilian area in Ferozpur in Punjab resulting in severe injuries to members of a local family, an Army official said. Citizens, especially in border areas, were advised to remain indoors, limit unnecessary movement, and strictly follow safety instructions issued by local authorities. 'While there is no need for panic, heightened vigilance and precaution are essential,' the official said. J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday evening urged people of Jammu to 'stay off the streets and stay at home', as blasts echoed in the city.
The Chief Minister said there were 'intermittent sounds of blasts, probably heavy artillery'. On Thursday, hundreds of drones that swarmed Indian skies were shot down and late in the evening, the Border Security Force (BSF) foiled an infiltration attempt along the border in the Samba sector of J&K, killing at least seven terrorists, an official said. One woman and two students were killed in J&K as Pakistan resorted to heavy calibre mortar shelling in villages along the Line of Control (LoC) on Thursday night and Friday morning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting at his residence on Friday, attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh, Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Navy chief Admiral D.K. Tripathi, and Tapan Kumar Deka, Director, Intelligence Bureau. Home Minister Amit Shah met chiefs of the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) as tensions heightened.
A sudden power outage plunged Jammu city into darkness following two loud explosions on Friday night, likely from the interception of intruding drones. Immediately after, sirens echoed throughout the city, alerting residents to seek shelter. Aerial objects had attempted to strike the strategic Jammu airport and its surrounding areas, which house Army, Air Force, and paramilitary installations. Locations including Baramulla, Srinagar, Avantipora, Nagrota, Jammu, Ferozpur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Lalgarh Jatta, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bhuj, Kuarbet and Lakhi Nala were targeted by aerial objects on Friday. 'A shell fired from Pakistan landed just behind the Christ School, run by the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate, a congregation in Poonch. Tragically, the shell hit the home of two students of the school. Both unfortunately lost their lives and their parents were severely injured,' Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on the civilian deaths in J&K, while addressing a press conference in New Delhi on Friday. In an interview to The Hindu, he said that India's steadfast unity in itself is a challenge to Pakistan.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Mr. Abdullah and senior Minister Sakina Ittoo met victims of shelling in both Kashmir and Jammu. Residents said the intensity of shelling was higher than that witnessed during the 1999 Kargil war. India shares 3,323 km of its land border with Pakistan along the States of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and the Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh. Meanwhile, Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda has directed all medical establishments to ensure that medical emergency response health systems are adequately equipped and functional at all times. Also, the All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi and other Union government hospitals have been asked to mobilise doctors and nurses with supplies for ready deployment. At a high-level meeting on Friday, Mr. Nadda called for ensuring that ground-level linkages with all State governments particularly at the district levels, especially border States, be effectively established to ensure immediate emergency healthcare, if required. The BCCI suspended IPL due to the tension and will announce fresh dates for the cricket tournament later.

‘My true factual story is being heard': Fugitive Vijay Mallya overwhelmed as podcast hits 20 million views in just 5 days

Five days after fugitive liquor baron Vijay Mallya, who has been criticised for alleged fraud and loan defaults, created a buzz through a video podcast with Raj Shamani, the founder of the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines, on Tuesday, expressed gratitude for the 'overwhelming' response to the video. The podcast aired on June 5 had garnered over 20 million views. 'To say that I am humbled and overwhelmed is well short of what I truly feel. A big heartfelt thank you to all those who took the time to watch my 4-hour-plus podcast with @rajshamani 20 million views on YouTube alone in 4 days, and god knows how many more reposts on Instagram and Facebook fills my heart with joy that my true factual story is being heard. May god bless you all,' he wrote on X. See the post here: To say that I am humbled and overwhelmed is well short of what I truly feel. With nearly a million views, Mallya's latest post quickly gained traction and prompted mixed reactions. 'You deserve justice. Let's see when GOI support you. Good luck,' a user wrote. 'If you are really innocent a toy claim, hire the best lawyer, approach SC, and get a clean chit. You can then come back proudly with your head held high,' another user commented. 'You will always be remembered as a clown. That podcast had zero impact on mature people, only underage RCB fans might have believed it,' a third user reacted. A key accused in a major bank loan default case involving over Rs 9,000 crore linked to the Kingfisher Airlines, Mallya fled from India in 2016. He faces serious allegations of cheating, criminal conspiracy, money laundering, and the misuse of loan funds provided by a union of Indian banks, led by the State Bank of India (SBI). His companies are under probe by multiple agencies in India, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO), and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

‘Mai pagal nahi hun': Indian student ‘mercilessly pulled, cuffed and tied' at US Airport, Indian Consulate reacts

A viral social media post claimed that an Indian student was "mercilessly pulled with both hands and legs, cuffed and tied" by US authorities at Newark airport. The post shows the Indian national pinned to the floor and handcuffed in the airport premises. The incident may have happened around June 7. An X user said in a June 8 post that he witnessed "a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night— handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal." "He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy," the user said. He shared some videos and sought the Indian embassy's help in reconciling him with his parents. The harrowing visuals showed the student pinned to the ground as at least four officials held him down. "This poor guy was speaking in Haryanvi language. I could recognise his accent where he was saying 'में पागल नहीं हूँ , ये लोग मुझे पागल साबित करने में लगे हुए हे [I am not mad, there are trying to prove that I am mad],' the user posted in a series of tweets. The student seems "disoriented" during the incident. "This poor kids parent won't know what's happening to him. @IndianEmbassyUS @DrSJaishankar he was to be boarded last night in the same flight with me but he never got boarded. Someone needs to find out what's going on with him at New Jersey authorities. I found him disoriented," the X user said. As the Indian Consulate General took notice of the incident, the witness said in another post, 'This is the power of people! We need this kid back safely ot his parents. thats all. His poor face is still haunting me every moment, and I refuse to rest until I know his current status." "They mercilessly pulled him with both hands and legs, cuffed and tied,' the witness alleged. The Consulate General of India in New York posted on X, saying, "We have come across social media posts claiming that an Indian national is facing difficulties at Newark Liberty International Airport. We are in touch with local authorities in this regard." "The Consulate remains ever committed for the welfare of Indian Nationals," the statement added.

Kharghar murder-suicide: Pakistani man ‘kills wife, self'; family was set to return home

NAVI MUMBAI: A 45-year-old Pakistani national is suspected to have stabbed to death his wife, also a Pakistani, with a kitchen knife and then died by suicide at their rental flat in Kharghar on Monday. The wife had stab injuries on the neck, back and shoulder. Deepak Surve, senior inspector, Kharghar police, said the man, Notan Das alias Sanjay Sachdeva, was accused of assaulting his wife, Sapna Das (35), in front of some neighbours last month, but the woman refused to lodge a complaint against him. The couple arrived in India with their two minor children on long-term visa more than six months ago. Sapna's sister, Sangeeta Makhija, who is an Indian citizen, took a flat on rent for them in Dolphine Pride Society in Sector 34, Kharghar. Makhija was reportedly taking care of their financial needs. A senior police officer said following the recent hostilities between India and Pakistan, the couple was in the process of completing the administrative formalities of returning home. Surve said when the younger child returned from his coaching class on Monday, he found the main door locked from the inside. His sibling was not at home either. "There was no response to repeated knocks. The child sought the help of a neighbour, who entered the flat through a common balcony. The neighbour found the couple in a pool of blood," said Surve. After last month's alleged assault, Makhija had sought police's help but they expressed helplessness after Sapna refused to file a complaint.
