Efforts on for safe return of Punjab farmer in Pak police custody, BSF tells family

Bathinda: Nearly four weeks after young Punjab farmer Amritpal Singh inadvertently crossed over into Pakistani territory from his field across the border fence, BSF has informed his family that efforts were being made for his safe return. The family received a letter Thursday from Punjab Frontier BSF headquarters that Pakistan police were investigating the case. Amritpal's family fears Pakistani authorities may suspect him of crossing over intentionally as a spy. In response to a letter from Amritpal's father, Jugraj Singh, to BSF headquarters on July 4, the border force has said Pakistan Rangers was being repeatedly approached for Amritpal's return. However, Pakistan Rangers has said he was in police custody and an "investigation" was in progress. Amritpal — a married man with an infant son — hails from Khere Ke Uttar village and has agricultural land in the jurisdiction of Rana Panjgrain, which is near the Zero Line. On June 21 afternoon, he signed the BSF register at the fence to cross over to his field but didn't sign out. Later, BSF personnel found footprints heading towards Pakistan and realised he had inadvertently crossed the border. On June 22, an FIR was registered and, five days later, BSF told his family Pakistan Rangers had confirmed he was in its custody. The family is desperate to get him back safely and has repeatedly approached BSF and other Indian authorities. Ferozepur MP Sher Singh Ghubaya met BSF DG Daljit Singh Chawdhary on July 5 and urged him to reach out to Pakistan Rangers through Punjab-based officials of BSF by holding flag meetings. On July 11, Jugraj met Punjab governor Gulab Chand Kataria, accompanied by BJP's Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi. The governor immediately had a telephonic conversation with BSF officials. Jugraj said they were living in anxiety and had been reaching out to civil and BSF authorities for nearly four weeks but to no avail.

Video of flag vendor beating in Bangladesh falsely shared as incident in India

A video of a vendor selling Bangladeshi flags being beaten up by a uniformed man has circulated in social media posts that falsely claim the incident took place in India's West Bengal state. The clip has in fact circulated in Bangladeshi media reports about a flag seller who was beaten by a soldier during a football match in the capital Dhaka on June 10, 2025. The 12-second clip of a uniformed man hitting another man carrying a bundle of flags was shared on Facebook on June 15, with the Hindi-language caption praising an Indian Border Security Force (BSF) soldier for the "treatment given to a Bangladeshi flag seller in West Bengal". "There should be restrictive action against traitors who live in India and hoist the flags of enemy nations Pakistan, Bangladesh and Palestine. Action should also be taken against those who make and sell these flags," adds the caption. The clip surfaced on Facebook and X as India deported hundreds of people to Bangladesh without trial, officials on both sides said, drawing condemnation from activists and lawyers who call the recent expulsions illegal and based on ethnic profiling (archived link). New Delhi says the people deported are undocumented migrants. However, the move has triggered fear among India's estimated 200 million Muslims, especially among speakers of Bengali, a widely spoken language in both eastern India and Bangladesh. Bangladesh, largely encircled by land by India, has seen relations with New Delhi turn icy since a mass uprising in 2024 toppled Dhaka's government that was led by Sheikh Hasina, an Indian ally. However, the clip was filmed in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka, not India. A reverse image search on Google using keyframes from clip found it used in a news report published on the verified YouTube channel of Bangladeshi news portal Dhaka Post on June 12, 2025 (archived link). The Bengali-language report is titled, "Army gifts 100,000 Bangladeshi Taka (US$824) to a flag seller injured in baton charge". The report states the Bangladeshi army compensated the flag seller after he was hit by a soldier who was attempting to control crowds during a football match between Bangladesh and Singapore on June 10. The same video was also used by Bangladeshi media outlet News1 TV in its report about the flag seller's compensation, while another local outlet Jugantor reported the beating took place as soldiers tried to push back crowds -- some without tickets -- who tried to rush the gates of the stadium (archived links here and here). The army described it as an "unintentional and isolated incident", the reports added.

BJP demands immediate SIR in West Bengal: ‘Rohingyas in electoral roll'

On a day when West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee led a protest march against alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants in BJP-ruled states, Leader of Opposition in Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday marched to the office of Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Kolkata and demanded Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral roll, which is currently being conducted in neighbouring poll-bound Bihar. Addressing a press conference after meeting CEO Manoj Agarwal, Adhikari accused the ruling TMC of allowing 'lakhs of Rohingya infiltrators' registered on the state's voter list. The BJP delegation also demanded an immediate 'house-to-house search' to identify them. 'Rohingyas from Myanmar are entering West Bengal via Nepal and Bangladesh borders, leading to a demographic shift, particularly in North and South 24 Parganas districts,' Adhikari claimed. 'We want a house-to-house search immediately. We want an SIR,' added the BJP MLA from Nandigram. He also urged the CEO to ensure transparent operations and said the CEO should ask for 50 per cent of state government and central government workers on deputation. Adhikari's allegations come in the wake of similar claims he made regarding Bihar's voter list. The BJP leader also described Mamata Banerjee's protest march as a rally to 'protect Rohingyas'. 'This rally was held to protect the Rohingyas… Mamata Banerjee is not worried about any change in the demography. She is only worried about the voters' list. She is on the street because of a fear psychosis. Because she knows that if, after Bihar, the Election Commission starts a random survey, then names of approximately one crore Rohingya would be deleted from the voters' list,' the BJP leader claimed. On the TMC's charge that the issue of illegal migrants entering the country falls in the domain of the BJP government at the Centre since the borders are manned by Border Security Force (BSF), Adhikari said: 'Mamata Banerjee has sent her Krishnanagar MP (Mahua Moitra) to the Supreme Court (against the SIR in Bihar). The chief minister says it is the responsibility of the BSF. Why didn't you give land to the BSF?' Adhikari also cited the recent suspension of a government official from Kakdwip sub-division in South 24 Parganas over alleged discrepancy in the voters' list, warning that any Booth Level Officer (BLO) colluding with the TMC would face similar consequences.
