SINGAPORE, July 7 (Bernama) -- Singapore's longest-serving mufti, Syed Isa Mohamed, passed away on Monday at the age of 87.
In a media statement, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) said his passing is a great loss to the Singapore Muslim community and the nation.
'MUIS is deeply saddened by the passing. His unwavering commitment and tireless efforts to promote a confident and progressive Muslim community have left a lasting impact on Singapore and beyond,' the statement read.

Syed Isa served as Mufti of Singapore from 1972 to 2010.
During his tenure, Syed Isa oversaw the establishment of many key institutions that shaped the religious life of the community. This included the establishment of a system for determining the Islamic calendar, development of the institution of zakat (alms) collection and disbursement, social development programmes for the poor and needy, and the Mosque Building Fund.
He also played a vital role in the management and growth of wakaf (voluntary charitable endowment) properties and was instrumental in setting up an internationally credible and reliable halal certification system.
Syed Isa also chaired the Fatwa Committee that provided solutions to complex and contentious issues, and was a key advocate of inter-religious harmony.
He served as a council member of the Inter-Religious Organisation of Singapore (IRO) in 1975 and became its president in 1993.
From 1992 to 2010, he was also a member of the Presidential Council for Religious Harmony.

The fraudulent video falsely portrays the monarch promoting an investment scheme promising high returns. The RPO issued a warning through Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar's official Facebook page, urging the public to remain cautious. 'The public is advised to be vigilant and not be easily influenced by these fake accounts, which are often used by scammers for fraudulent purposes on Facebook and other social media platforms,' the statement read. Authorities emphasized that impersonation and identity misuse are serious legal offenses. 'Strict action will be taken against those involved in accordance with the provisions of the law,' the RPO added. The rise of AI-generated deepfake content has raised concerns globally, with scammers exploiting the technology to deceive unsuspecting victims. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the vacancies for both positions would be filled in accordance with Article 122B of the Federal Constitution, which stipulates that appointments shall be made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, on the advice of the Prime Minister, after consulting the Conference of Rulers. "This matter is in line with the Federal Constitution, which is the supreme law of the country and must be upheld by all parties. It also reflects the principle of constitutional monarchy, which forms the foundation of the country's administration,' she said in a statement today. Azalina said, in this regard, the Conference of Rulers is scheduled to convene for its 269th meeting from July 15 to 17. She also said the Cabinet had discussed the vacancies for the positions during its meeting on July 9 and had taken full note of public concerns regarding the matter. Azalina said the government understood the people's concerns about the importance of preserving the continuity and integrity of the judiciary, which served as the pillar of the rule of law. She said the Madani Government remained committed to strengthening public confidence in the judicial institution, including through long-term improvement measures aimed at enhancing its transparency and independence. "The government also calls on all parties to give space for the process outlined in the Federal Constitution to proceed smoothly and appropriately in the interest of the country, the rule of law and institutional stability,' she said. Meanwhile, Azalina said Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim is exercising the powers and duties of the office of the Chief Justice (including those under the Constitution) until the position is filled. She said this was in accordance with Article 131A of the Federal Constitution, as well as paragraph 9(1)(b) and subsection 9(3) of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964, to ensure continuity in the administration of justice in the country. The post of Chief Justice became vacant following the mandatory retirement of Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat on July 2.
