UAE ranks 5th globally in competitiveness; approves Dh1.25 billion for housing
The UAE's rise to 5th place globally in the 2025 IMD World Competitiveness Ranking. The country moved up two spots from last year, ranking ahead of the US, Sweden, and Germany. UAE ranked first in the absence of bureaucracy, second in policy adaptability, and fourth in government efficiency. The ranking reflects performance in areas such as economic strength, business environment, infrastructure, and government services. This was announced during the UAE Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, which was chaired by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai. The meeting, held at Qasr Al Watan in Abu Dhabi, reviewed national progress and approved several initiatives. The session also covered housing support, trade achievements, digital services, environmental plans, and international agreements. Sheikh Mohammed said, "Fourteen years ago, we established a competitiveness centre, uniting the efforts of key national entities. These efforts have elevated the UAE's ranking from 28th globally in 2009 to being among the top five globally in competitiveness. This achievement is a testament to years of consistent effort." The Cabinet also approved Dh1.25 billion in housing support for 1,838 citizens in the first half of 2025 under the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme. The move aims to support stable living conditions for Emirati families across the country. Foreign trade was another major focus. The Cabinet reviewed the signing of 27 Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs) with countries around the world. Eight of these agreements are already active. These deals helped the UAE's total trade reach Dh5.23 trillion in 2024. Non-oil exports grew to Dh440 billion, while foreign direct investment reached Dh113 billion. To support the maritime sector, the Cabinet approved the establishment of a National Maritime Navigation Center under the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure. The centre will manage vessel tracking, safety systems, and environmental protection efforts. On the digital front, the UAE's digital identity system has now surpassed 11 million registered users, enabling over 2.6 billion transactions across 130 government and private entities. Efforts to combat financial crime were also discussed. The Cabinet approved the restructuring of the High Committee on Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorism Financing, under the leadership of Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Environmental and heritage efforts were included in the agenda. The UAE added nine new biodiversity hotspots, expanded land and marine protected areas, and launched a plan to plant 100 million mangrove trees by 2030. A new federal law to preserve cultural heritage was also approved. The Cabinet also reviewed achievements from the latest 'Make it in the Emirates' industrial platform, which attracted over 122,000 visitors and facilitated AED 168 billion in procurement opportunities. It also signed Dh11 billion in industrial agreements and introduced a new recognition category for traditional crafts. Internationally, the Cabinet approved 13 agreements and 36 more under negotiation, covering areas like trade, visas, energy, and investment. Dubai's Deyaar eyes $545mln in sales from Downtown Residences project
Dubai-listed Deyaar Development is targeting sales of almost 2 billion UAE dirhams ($544.59 million) from its flagship Downtown Residences project in Business Bay, according to CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Qatami. The 110-storey-plus residential tower is expected to break ground in the fourth quarter of 2025, he told CNBC Arabia. The company's development portfolio stands at AED 1.1 billion, which is sufficient for the next two years, Al Qatami said. Deyaar will deliver five projects this year starting July, CNBC Arabia reported. The company has liquidity of nearly AED 1.8 billion and banking facilities of approximately AED 900 million, it said. Last week, Deyaar had announced in a press statement that the 445-metre tall residential twin tower is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2030. UAE Cabinet discusses nation's high ranking in global competitiveness report
The UAE has ranked in the top five countries in the world for competitiveness, according to the results of a study which was discussed during a meeting of the UAE Cabinet. The meeting, which was chaired by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, took place at Qasr Al Watan in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. The UAE's position in the 2025 Annual Competitiveness Report issued by the World Competitiveness Centre was on the agenda. The Emirates ranked fifth globally for economic competitiveness, government efficiency, legislative strength and business environment. The highest-ranked nation was Switzerland, with Singapore, Hong Kong and Denmark rounding off the top four. "We established a Competitiveness Centre 16 years ago and streamlined the efforts of the most important national institutions in this field," said Sheikh Mohammed on X. "Thanks to these efforts, the UAE advanced from 28th place globally in 2009 to the world's top five most competitive countries." The UAE's climbed two places from last year. Housing support worth Dh1.2 billion ($330,000) was also approved for more than 1,800 Emiratis during Tuesday's meeting. The housing support, approved by the Cabinet, will enhance family stability, said Sheikh Mohammed in a post on X. The Cabinet also approved the results and work of the Emirates Council for Balanced Development. "The Council continues its efforts to implement projects and build national partnerships to develop the UAE's villages across the tourism, development and social sectors. Its efforts have contributed to creating unique opportunities for families, young talents and small business owners," said Sheikh Mohammed. "The Council's message is that no part of the UAE, near or far, should be excluded from the massive development momentum our country is witnessing." Growing in numbers The amount of people using the UAE Pass digital identity system was also reviewed. The number of registered users was 11 million, with more than 600 million logins. The service now connects more than 13 government entities, Sheikh Mohammed said. A restructuring of the country's attempts to tackle money laundering was also approved in Tuesday's meeting. "Over the past few years, the committee has achieved remarkable success in strengthening strategies and procedures in the field of money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism at the national level," said Sheikh Mohammed. "The committee will continue its work to ensure that the UAE remains a global leader in the field of combatting money laundering and the financing of terrorism." The establishment of a Maritime Navigation Centre was also approved. The centre will manage and operate the integrated national maritime system, said Sheikh Mohammed, who is also Vice President. The Cabinet also reviewed the 2024 report of the Higher Commission for Free Trade Negotiations. The report showcased the signing and conclusion of negotiations for 27 Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements with other countries, of which eight have already come into effect, the UAE Government Media Office reported. New embassies will be established in Togo, Gabon, Cameroon and Tajikistan, alongside a UAE Consulate General in Miami in the US state of Florida, the media office said on Tuesday.
