AIS banking on Premier League for growth

Bangkok Post15-07-2025
Advanced Info Service (AIS) is targeting strong growth of its fixed broadband business in the second half of this year, driven by English Premier League (EPL) content through pub-bar events and its network capability.
The target is in line with AIS's strategy in the second half under the concept "Boosting your brighter future – connecting, enabling, and enriching fixed broadband customers".
The AIS 3BB FIBRE3 service reinforces the company's commitment to supporting businesses, entrepreneurs and both public and private sectors -- driving strong, sustainable growth for Thailand's digital economy, said Yordchai Asawathongchai, head of commercial broadband business at AIS.
He said the AIS 3BB FIBRE3 service remains the No.1 fixed broadband network in Thailand, with over 5 million users across all 77 provinces.
He said the company has seen a growth opportunity as the broadband industry still has significant growth potential, with current household penetration at just 36.8% from the total 29 million households in the country.
"That's why AIS 3BB FIBRE3 is committed to expanding and delivering innovations and solutions that fit every aspect of all digital lifestyles. Because in this era, it's no longer just about speed or bandwidth, it's about truly understanding and meeting the needs of every household."
Mr Yordchai said the company also sees potential through the EPL broadcasting content via pub-bar events nationwide.
Currently, there are more than 50,000 pubs and bars nationwide which have the potential to subscribe to Premier League content to serve their clients.
He declined to elaborate regarding the subscriber growth target, saying the revenue growth for fixed broadband business this year should not be lower than that of 2024.
Jasmine International Public Co Ltd is the exclusive rights holder for live broadcasts of the EPL and FA Cup in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia from 2025/26. It has partnered with AIS to bring the world's most popular football league content directly to Thai football fans.
Mr Yordchai said AIS 3BB FIBRE3 is driving its broadband business forward through three core strategies: connecting, creating opportunities and delivering happiness.
With more connectivity, he said customers can enjoy every match of the EPL live via AIS PLAY and MONOMAX streaming platforms.
The AIS EPL package for pub, bar and restaurants begins at 2,800 baht per month.
Beyond the sports content, AIS launched the AI 2G router model, supporting speeds of up to 2 gigabits per second (Gbps) via both Wi-Fi and local area network.
The router reduces interference and latency by over 50%, while accelerating performance for applications like live streaming, online gaming and video conferencing.
AIS has also launched the "pro-event" solution, offering high-speed internet access of up to 2 Gbps to meet the demands to organise next-generation events.
This solution delivers direct, high-performance connectivity from the AIS and 3BB FIBRE3 networks to event venues, powered by cutting-edge technology that ensures maximum speed, stability and strength. It is designed for use both indoors and outdoors, covering locations nationwide.
Mr Yordchai added AIS provides more happiness through the strategy enhancing families' quality of life and safety with high-speed internet packages bundled with comprehensive home protection with the AIS 3BB FIBRE3 Home Insurance package.
Starting from 699 baht a month, customers receive free insurance coverage from MSIG, including protection against natural disasters up to 500,000 baht, burglary coverage for residential properties up to 100,000 baht, personal belongings and firefighting expense compensation up to 50,000 baht each and 24-hour emergency home assistance available once a year.

Sri Lankans to replace fleeing Cambodian workers

The government is drawing up a plan to replace Cambodian workers who have returned to their country due to the ongoing border tensions with workers from Sri Lanka, according to the Labour Ministry yesterday. While the government is still working out the exact number of Cambodian workers who have left the country since the border conflict erupted, Labour Minister Pongkawin Jungrungreangkit estimated about 20,000 registered workers have gone back across the border -- far below the 200,000 claimed by Phnom Penh. To minimise disruptions to ongoing projects, the Labour Ministry is considering bringing in workers from Sri Lanka. The process, however, is still in its initial stages and contingent on the signing of an MoU, which is still currently being drafted, Mr Pongkawin noted. The exact number of workers that would be brought in will depend on market demand, the minister added. Mr Pongkawin also clarified that a recent altercation involving Thai and Cambodian workers was nothing but a personal dispute. Speaking to the media, Mr Pongkawin said, "This was merely a brawl between individuals, not a conflict between employers and employees, and certainly not a violation of human rights." He assured foreign workers are protected equally under Thai law and reaffirmed Thailand's commitment to upholding migrant workers' rights. The clarification followed a call by Cambodia's Ministry of Labour urging international consumers to boycott Thai goods and services over the incident. In response, Mr Pongkawin said Thailand's Labour Ministry is drafting a formal reply to the International Labour Organization (ILO) to assert that no such abuses occurred. The ministry plans to allow ILO representatives to inspect Thai businesses to demonstrate transparency. In a separate press briefing, Teerachai Phuwanatnaranubala, deputy leader of the Palang Pracharath Party in charge of economic affairs, called on the government to prepare for the economic fallout of the Thai-Cambodian dispute. As the situation remains uncertain, he urged the government to prepare contingency plans, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Mr Teerachai reiterated his earlier call to reallocate part of the 157-billion-baht stimulus budget to help address labour-related challenges. "While the industrial sector can adjust production lines, the agriculture sector -- especially fruit orchards, which are dependent on migrant labour -- is far more vulnerable," he warned.

Commerce Ministry Boosts Exports Amid US Tariff Pressures

The Ministry of Commerce, through the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), is accelerating efforts to expand export markets in response to US tariff measures by hosting the 'Thailand – Global Connect: Seeking New Opportunities Amidst Global Trade Challenges' business matching event. The initiative brought together 156 Thai companies and 135 importers from 29 countries, resulting in over 700 trade negotiations conducted both online and onsite. The event is expected to generate approximately 800 million baht in trade value. Mr Suchart Chomklin, Deputy Minister of Commerce, presided over the opening ceremony on 31 July 2025 at Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao, Bangkok. He stated: 'Thailand's trade economy and export sector are key drivers of national economic growth.' Despite global economic slowdowns and weakened demand from major partners in 2025, he affirmed that opportunities persist amidst the challenges. From January to June 2025, Thailand's global export value reached USD 166.85 billion (THB 5.58 trillion), marking a 15.03% increase year-on-year. Major markets include the United States, China, Japan, India, and Malaysia—with exports to the US growing 29.74%. Key export products include computers and components, rubber products, fax machines, telephones and parts, electrical transformers, and industrial machinery. While the United States remains Thailand's top export market, the global trade environment remains volatile due to shifting US trade policies. In the first half of 2025, Thailand's exports to the US totalled USD 33.41 billion (THB 1.12 trillion), accounting for 20.02% of total exports. To address uncertainty and sustain momentum, the Ministry has adopted a proactive export acceleration policy, focusing on opening new markets and enhancing the competitiveness of Thai entrepreneurs. This includes connecting Thai businesses with international networks and supporting their development on the global stage. The 'Thailand – Global Connect' event is part of this policy, aiming to create new opportunities for Thai enterprises across all major export categories—including food and beverages, lifestyle products, health and beauty, automotive parts, machinery, medical devices, and service sectors. Trade negotiations with buyers from 29 countries are expected to strengthen business alliances, expand export channels, and increase global competitiveness. 'The Ministry of Commerce anticipates trade value from this activity to reach 800 million baht. Forming international alliances and opening new trade avenues are essential to maintaining export resilience in today's unpredictable trade landscape,' concluded Mr Suchart.
