Apple Sports App Gets Tennis and More Updates
Apple continues to expand its sports offerings for mobile users. On Wednesday, the company announced new updates to the Apple Sports app that include a revamped home screen and the addition of tennis ahead of the Wimbledon championships. All the changes were launched on the app today.
This tennis season, you can check out live scores (or from past tournament rounds) for men's and women's matches. Apple Sports will allow you to track points and player advancement throughout events like Grand Slam or Wimbledon. Though the app doesn't currently offer the ability to follow individual players, tournament information can be showcased on the home display if you add and customize the tennis options.
Sports fans will notice that the home screen is now organized by whichever leagues you keep up with. For example, if you follow MLB, you'll see a more personalized display for your favorite teams, with game stats for yesterday, today, and information for any upcoming events. If you're following multiple sports and leagues, -- including tennis -- you can re-order which ones show up first on your screen and the app will adapt to your preferences.

The free app, which is available for iPhone in the US, UK and Canada only, initially launched in February 2024. It offers features such as shareable game cards and real-time stats and game updates for NFL, MLS, NHL, MLB, NBA, WNBA, college sports and international soccer leagues. Its Live Activities function serves up scores and gameplay on your iPhone's lock screen or Apple Watch, and is conveniently connected to Dynamic Island.

For starters, it is very capable in terms of performance. You'll get a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and 16GB of RAM. These specs put it up there with all the best Android phones available right now. The build hasn't changed much since last year. The device features an aluminum frame and a stainless steel hinge, along with an IP48 rating. That said, the design got a really nice upgrade this time around. Mostly in the back, as Motorola introduced really fun leather-like materials there. In fact, the wooden look made a comeback this year. These look amazing, and they feel soft to the touch. This beats nearly all other phones out there. Even the 4.0-inch external display keeps the same panel technology and refresh rate, but the resolution is obviously reduced. That 1,272 x 1,080 resolution is still great for such a small display. We were also impressed by the battery life. Our tests show that the 4,700mAh battery can last nearly 25 hours playing 4K content. And when it's time to recharge, you can do so at 68W wired or 30W wirelessly. As of today, this is the best flip phone you can get, and we're not sure if Samsung will beat it. A penny under $1,300 is still quite expensive, but this is a premium device that competes against the best out there, which is rare for a flip phone. Take advantage of this offer while you can!

US senators reintroduce bill to open Apple and Google's app stores
Senators Marsha Blacburn (R-Tenn.), Mike Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) have reintroduced a bill that would force app store owners like Apple and Google to allow third-party payment systems and sideloading apps, among a collection of other developer-friendly changes. The bill, called the Open App Markets App, was originally introduced in 2021, but it never came up for a vote after passing through the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2022. The Open App Markets Act applies its changes to app stores with 50,000 monthly users or more, most obviously applicable to the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. Like the original bill, the reintroduced Open App Markets Act wants covered companies to allow things like sideloading, third-party app stores and alternative payments systems, while protecting developers ability to "tell consumers about lower prices and offer competitive pricing." It would also prevent app store operators from privileging their own apps and services in app store search results. While the aims of the new bill are largely the same as the original one, the legal environment is meaningfully different. Apple has been forced to allow third-party app stores and alternative payment systems in the European Union following the introduction of the Digital Markets Act in 2022. Thanks to its failure to make good on the small concession Epic won via its lawsuit, Apple has also been forced to allow developers to direct customers to pay for things outside of the App Store and its in-app payments system. The Open App Markets Act would make these kinds of changes the law in the US. It seems possible the bill could pass, too. Regulatory pressure on tech companies has only increased since 2021. For example, Utah recently passed an age-verification law that would require app stores to only allow users 18 and up to make an account.
