'Partial tick': coalition cautious on PM's summit idea

The federal opposition has given the government a partial tick over its upcoming productivity summit, saying that at least Labor recognises there is a problem. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the plan on Tuesday, saying the gathering of business, union and other leaders in Canberra in August would focus on ways to lift economic output. "A round table. Yay!" shadow treasurer Ted O'Brien joked during an interview on Nine's Today program on Wednesday. "But look ... to be fair, at least they're recognising the problem ... so let's take that as a partial tick." Experts are concerned about Australia's lagging rate of productivity - a key economic measure of efficiency and long-term driver of improved living standards. Despite criticism that previous federal government economic summits were too slanted, Mr Albanese said this roundtable would be broad-based. He called for a mature discussion from all parties, noting it was in everyone's interest for productivity to improve. "We're a Labor government, we support unions existing ... but we will always respect both the role of business and the role of unions," he told the National Press Club on Tuesday. "There are common interests ... you don't get union members unless you've got successful employers. "It's the private sector that drives an economy. What the public sector should do is facilitate private sector activity and private sector investment." The Productivity Commissioner's most recent report showed labour productivity fell 0.1 per cent in the December quarter and dropped 1.2 per cent in the past year. The Business Council of Australia says productivity growth over the past decade has been the lowest in 60 years. Council chief executive Bran Black welcomed the roundtable, saying "lifting business investment is essential to boosting productivity, lifting real wages, creating jobs and ensuring more opportunity for more Australians". "We will continue to be very clear about policies that the business community believes will be counterproductive to improving productivity," he said. Mr Albanese said he wanted a boost to productivity, alongside other economic indicators as part of his second-term agenda. "We want to build an economy where growth, wages and productivity rise together," he said. ACTU secretary Sally McManus said working Australians must be at the centre of the roundtable. "We need to leave behind the idea that productivity is equated with cutting pay and making people work harder for less," she said. Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Andrew McKellar said boosting productivity was essential for economic growth. "The business community looks forward to participating in the summit and contributing constructive and sensible ideas to address the problem," he said. Meanwhile, the World Bank has slashed its global growth forecast for 2025 by four-tenths of a percentage point to 2.3 per cent. The downgrade was driven by higher US tariffs on foreign imports and heightened uncertainty posed a "significant headwind" for nearly all economies. The World Bank is the latest body to cut its growth forecast as a result of President Donald Trump's erratic trade policies. But it stopped short of forecasting a recession, despite predicting global economic growth this year would be the weakest outside of a recession since 2008. with Reuters Effettua l'accesso per consultare il tuo portafoglio

UnitedHealth Group considers bids to divest Latin American unit

US health insurer UnitedHealth Group is considering multiple bids to offload its operations in Latin America, reported Reuters, citing sources. The insurer has been attempting to divest its Latin American assets since 2022, following losses exceeding $8bn in the region, the report said. The news agency further noted that the urgency to sell its subsidiary Banmedica, which operates in Colombia and Chile, has intensified in recent months due to financial pressures on multiple fronts. The company has already exited its operations in Brazil and Peru and is now focusing on securing a deal for its Colombian and Chilean operations. Currently, UnitedHealth has received four non-binding bids for Banmedica, estimated at around $1bn. The bidding entities are Acon Investments, Patria Investments, Christus Health and Auna from Lima. Auna is reportedly in discussions with a financial partner to strengthen its bid. UnitedHealth acquired Banmedica in 2018, with then-CEO David Wichmann expressing a long-term vision for growth in South America. However, the insurer decided to withdraw from the region three years later due to losses, particularly from its Brazilian operation, Amil. Despite Banmedica being profitable, with earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of more than $200m, it is deemed too small for UnitedHealth's interests. Brazilian investment bank BTG Pactual is said to be advising UnitedHealth on the sale process. UnitedHealth expects to set a deadline for binding proposals for Banmedica by July, as it seeks to streamline its operations and focus on more profitable markets. The company bounced back to profitability in the first quarter of 2025, with net earnings of $6.4bn, compared with a net loss of $1.2bn in the same period a year ago. Stephen Hemsley took over the role of group CEO from Andrew Witty in May. How far will your pension go as retirement costs go up

The cost of retirement continues to creep up, with the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) recently putting the cost of a moderate retirement at £31,700 per year for a single person and £43,900 per year for a couple. This includes the state pension, but shows how much heavy lifting our workplace or personal pensions need to do to fill the gap. This is hardly going to buy you a luxury lifestyle either – a moderate lifestyle covers all your basics, plus some nice extras such as two weeks in Europe a year and the ability to run a car. If you want something more luxurious, this data shows your pension is going to need to work much harder: a comfortable lifestyle is said to cost £43,900 per year for a single person and £60,600 for a couple. Read more: What is the Pension Investment Review? Before you throw your hands up in despair, it's fair to say that while these figures provide a useful rule of thumb, they aren't hard and fast. Our own data from the HL Savings and Resilience Barometer put the costs slightly lower. A moderate retirement for a single person was pegged at £26,129 per year and a comfortable retirement at £41,829. The key thing is to think about what retirement means for you – is it lots of travelling or something more sedate? You may find that what you need differs massively from these figures. Once you've got an idea of what you want, you can start to put a figure on what that might cost. It's important to factor in all costs. The PLSA data assumes you own your home in retirement, and this is no longer the case for many people. So, if this is you, you will also need to factor mortgage or rental costs into your plan. You can then use online calculators to see if what you've got in your pension will get you where you need to be. Putting your data in an online calculator can show you what you are on track for in retirement. This will either give you the confidence of knowing you've got enough, or the time to put a plan in place if you haven't. Read more: Should people keep working until later in life? They can even be used to model the impact of boosting your contributions over time, so you can see how much small changes can help you move towards your retirement goal. Boosting contributions every time you get a pay rise can also make a big difference and it's also worth checking to see if your employer is willing to increase their contributions if you increase yours. This is known as an employer match and can play a big part in boosting your pension. The data shows that coupled up retirees have a slightly easier time of things than their single friends. This is because they share a lot of costs and will have the benefit of two state pensions and two workplace or personal pensions. This is a big help, but it's important not to rely too heavily on a partner's pension to see you through retirement. Relationships may not last and there's a worry that you could find yourself approaching retirement with very little. It's always important to make your own provision – even if you stay together having your own income will give you more control over how you spend your money in retirement.
