Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac handed popularity reality check as fans don't hold back
A new poll shows most Premier League fans don't want Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac owning their clubs, despite Wrexham continuing to thrive under their celebrity stewardship Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have been handed a reality check on the extent of their popularity. The two actors have taken the football world by storm since buying the Welsh club in February 2021. The Red Dragons have registered three promotions in a row, lifting them from the National League to the Championship. Wrexham have also attracted a global fanbase after their achievements were highlighted on the Welcome to Wrexham documentary. However, while supporters in the North Wales city are more than happy to have the A-list pair on board, a new poll shows not every fanbase would be. Betfair's annual 'Nation Predicts' survey shows 66 per cent of more than 2,000 football lovers questioned wouldn't be interested in Reynolds and Mac owning their club. Liverpool and Newcastle supporters were most against the idea of Hollywood ownership. The findings of the poll conducted by YouGov Sport are perhaps unsurprising given the two clubs' relative satisfaction with their current owners, who are also far richer than the Wrexham pair. The Reds lifted the Premier League title last season and a summer of big spending has followed under owners Fenway Sports Group. Meanwhile, Newcastle, backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, clinched their first piece of major silverware since 1969 by winning the Carabao Cup. Manchester United fans were the most receptive to the idea of Reynolds and Mac taking the helm, with 27 per cent supportive of the prospect, compared to 56 per cent against. That could potentially be down to significant discontent with the Glazer family's ownership and, more recently, the partial takeover by Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Surprisingly, 69 per cent of Tottenham supporters were against the notion of the Hollywood duo taking charge, with only 21 per cent in favour. That's despite Spurs fans often voicing their anger at chairman Daniel Levy over the club's fortunes in recent years. While supporters of Premier League sides might turn their noses up at Reynolds and Mac, who recently filed to legally change his surname from McElhenney, their stock in Wrexham remains as high as ever. And former England goalkeeper Nigel Martyn also believes that celebrity ownership can provide a net benefit for football after highlighting the progress enjoyed by Wrexham and Birmingham City, who are part-owned by NFL legend Tom Brady. Speaking to Parimatch, Martyn said: "I think it's been a breath of fresh air if I'm totally honest. Seeing things like the Wrexham documentary on television and how open they've been with everything is great for the game. "They're popular people and while Ryan Reynolds is somebody that most people think, 'Yeah, he looks like he's a nice guy and he's funny,' both he and Rob McElhenney are serious about how they run the football club as well. "You won't hear anyone in Wrexham say a bad thing about them, I wouldn't imagine, because they've turned them around from a team that had been out of the Football League to one which I expect to see pushing into the higher echelons and the Premier League. It's been tremendous. "Anything that boosts the club and the standing of your club in a positive way is a good thing. To have Tom Brady at Birmingham City, for Birmingham fans, it makes them stick their chest out a little bit further and say, 'Look who we've got now.'" He added: "So far, Wrexham have done it tremendously well and Birmingham appear to be making progress. In all honesty, it doesn't matter how much money you throw at it, there is no guarantee that you're going to win the league. But, so far, both teams have bounced up the leagues pretty well. "Fair play to them, it's going to be interesting but I think it's a positive thing, definitely, and celebrity ownership, with people trying to copy Wrexham and Birmingham, is probably something we'll see more and more and more of." MS shares updates from across Wrexham and Flintshire
MS for Delyn Roedd hi'n wych bod yn yr Eisteddfod yn Wrecsam yr wythnos diwethaf – it was great to be at the Eisteddfod in Wrexham last week. The Eisteddfod is the largest cultural festival in Europe and this year it was held close to home in Wrexham – it's a celebration of everything that's great about being Welsh and it gave me the chance to use my Welsh language as much as possible! It was also good to see so many individuals and organisations visiting, taking part and hosting sessions in the tents and on the Maes, and I also spent some time on the Senedd stand as part of my work as Chair of the Standards of Conduct Committee. Mwynheais i fy amser yn yr #steddfod! The Senedd summer recess means I have more time to get out and about here at home during the week and meet constituents for a chat. Last week it was good to join Clwyd East MP Becky Gittins and talk to constituents about bus travel and a range of topics at Mold market, then later on in the afternoon I headed to Gwernaffield to deliver a summer update and let residents know about one of my upcoming street surgeries – a great way for me to reach out regularly to communities across the constituency to talk about the issues that they care about. Regular readers will know that I'm a big fan of reading and we have some great bookshops in our corner of North East Wales, especially my local one Mold Bookshop which I visit regularly. Our area also has plenty of libraries which provide not only books but help to support our communities in a range of different ways – during the summer holidays, Flintshire libraries are taking part in a programme designed to engage children in reading across the school holidays called the Summer Reading Challenge. This year, the theme is 'Story Garden', where magical creatures, wild tales and the wonders of nature come to life. To complete the Summer Reading Challenge, children are asked to read at least six books, choosing from stories, graphic novels, non-fiction books or audio books. You can find more information on your local library at Were you inspired by Wales qualifying for the Women's Euros? The FAW has launched a new campaign all about helping more women and girls in Wales to find their place in football, on the pitch, in the dugout or in the stands. From free coaching tasters to fun football sessions for young girls, there's something for everyone to get involved with this summer and beyond. You can find out more about the Gêm for Her, Gêm for You campaign at There's a place for every woman and girl in football and the campaign celebrates the stories of women and girls who have already made their mark in the game, but also aims to inspire others to take their first steps into football. The Welsh Government's Claim What's Yours campaign, delivered through AdviceLink Cymru, helps you to access the financial support you're entitled to, from help with heating bills to benefit checks and more. One in four households in Wales were in fuel poverty last year, so if you are struggling with household bills then help is available and I'd recommend checking out for more information. If you need any further help or advice, contact my office or email me at – we have various resources available which you might find useful. Finally, I'd like to congratulate all the riders who cycled from Paris to Geneva to raise funds to help Palestine recently – the whopping 350 miles were covered in just over four days to raise money for Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) and so far the team has raised £175,000 and are now aiming for £200,000. Every penny supports MAP's vital, lifesaving work on the ground in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon and the organisation was among the first to respond to the emergency in October 2023 and remains one of the last INGOs on the ground. You can find out more at As always, if you would like advice and/or support, please don't hesitate to get in touch on any of the following contact details – 52 High Street, Mold, Flintshire, on 01352 753464 or by email You can also keep up to date via my Facebook page – Constituents are, of course, welcome to contact my office to arrange an appointment to see me, you don't need to wait for an advice surgery.
