Police close probe into missing R465k Sedibeng mayoral chain
The NPA is yet to respond.
When asked for a comment, Maloka said: 'I am unable to comment about a process which was never in my control to give you acceptable outcomes.
'The municipality has a comprehensive security system in place in and around the office, which to date no-one knows or no report is available on how it was breached, so that improvements sought are informed accordingly.'
DA MPL Kingsol Chabalala described the closure of the case as disturbing.
'This is a serious matter that leaves suspicions, as the case has be suddenly closed without any arrests or recovery of the mayoral chain,' he said.
Chabalala has since written to Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi, calling for urgent intervention in what he describes as an 'unresolved matter'.
In the letter, he raised concerns about transparency, accountability and the handling of public assets within the Sedibeng district municipality.
'The disappearance of a ceremonial asset valued at nearly half a million rand, coupled with the lack of transparency and accountability, undermines public trust in the municipality's leadership.
'Your intervention is critical to restoring confidence and ensuring that those responsible for any negligence or misconduct are held accountable. I trust that your office will treat this matter with the urgency and seriousness it demands. Please keep me informed of any actions taken or progress made in addressing this issue,' reads part of the letter.

Drive-by shooting mars #SilencingTheGuns pledge
Acting chairperson of the Manenberg community policing forum Vanessa Adriaanse said the murder appeared to be gang-related. The victim was a witness in a criminal case. 'It is disheartening to think that we are attending an event in Manenberg about silencing the guns on Women's Day, and they have just shot and killed a female,' said Adriaanse. 'How abnormal can our communities still become? We are now standing over the body of a young female aged 30 who was just shot and killed. Our hearts are bleeding. As women. What must we do?' Adriaanse believes the motive for the killing was to silence the woman: 'She was a witness in a case and that might be why she has been killed.' Adriaanse left the crime scene to sign the pledge at Phoenix High School with other stakeholders. 'As leaders in policing, government and civil society, and as representatives of the communities most affected by gun violence, we acknowledge the devastating effect of illegal firearms on the lives of our residents — especially women, children and the vulnerable,' the pledge reads. 'We recognise that firearm-related violence has stolen lives, shattered families and undermined public safety and trust. We also acknowledge that effective change requires collective will, co-ordinated action and the active involvement of all sectors of society.' TimesLIVE

Fourth suspect arrested over killing of Prasa manager in La Lucia
A fourth suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) regional manager Jacob Khoaele in La Lucia in January. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda said Khoaele, 53, died in a hail of bullets in his vehicle on Shelbourne Avenue on January 22. He said the murder investigation was handed to provincial serious and violent crime, murder and robbery detectives who cracked the case and arrested twins Vukani and Vukile Mchunu aged 35 on July 27. Investigations also pointed to Sandile Sakhile Ngcobo, 38, as the alleged mastermind behind the killing. Ngcobo made his first appearance on August 4 and is also an accused in a triple murder and attempted murder case in which he allegedly shot dead three people accused of murder in Msinsini in 2021. 'The three had just appeared in court when they were shot and killed inside a vehicle in Hibberdene on June 27 2024. A passer-by also sustained a gunshot shot wound during the incident,' said Netshiunda. Detectives made another breakthrough on Friday at the Scottburgh magistrate's court where a fourth suspect, 24, was arrested while appearing in a case of house robbery and attempted murder involving a homeowner who was shot and his vehicle stolen on November 11 2024. The suspect is expected to appear in the Durban magistrate's court on Monday while the trio return to court on Tuesday. Netshiunda said police were still searching for at least two more suspects in the Khoaele investigation. TimesLIVE

Minister Kubayi asserts no executive interference in NPA prosecutions
Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says she has given full support to the National Prosecuting Authority's need for financial and operational independence. Image: Jairus Mmutle / GCIS Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has reaffirmed the independence of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), asserting that her ministerial oversight does not extend to influence over prosecutorial decisions. 'The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development exercises final responsibility over the NPA. This role is administrative and policy-oriented and does not extend to involvement in or interference with specific prosecutorial decisions,' Kubayi said. She made the statement when she was responding to parliamentary questions posed by EFF MP Rebecca Mohlala. Mohlala posed the parliamentary questions following the recent allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. She wanted to know the measures that were in place to guarantee prosecutorial decisions in politically sensitive cases were free from executive interference and undue political influence. In her reply, Kubayi said the Constitution safeguards the NPA's prosecutorial independence. 'It explicitly states that the NPA must exercise its functions without fear, favour or prejudice, which is reinforced by Section 32 of the National Prosecuting Authority Act, 1998 (Act No. 32 of 1998).' She added that the NPA was accountable to Parliament, including for its decisions regarding the institution of prosecutions. The Constitution also provided safeguards against executive interference as it provided that 'national legislation must ensure that the prosecuting authority exercises its functions without fear, favour or prejudice'. 'The NPA is therefore guided by constitutional and legislative provisions that guarantee its independence,' Kubayi said. The minister stated that she did not possess investigative powers and could not initiate or conduct investigations. However, she confirmed that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in KwaZulu-Natal has received an enquiry from the SAPS and has dedicated prosecutors to deal with allegations of defeating the administration of justice regarding the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team. 'The DPP will report to the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP).' Kubayi added that matters referred to the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) were assessed to determine whether or not fell within the IDAC's mandate before a decision was made to investigate. She said there were prescripts that guided the investigations and legal processes that IDAC must follow. 'There are sufficient checks and balances to ensure that there is no interference internal or otherwise. To date there has not been any interference in the matters that IDAC has been dealing with.' Regarding high profile cases, Kubayi said National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Shamila Batohi issued directives which require prosecutors in the prosecution of sensitive or contentious nature to inform the DPP concerned in writing about the nature and details of such matters, and the DPP was expected to similarly inform Batohi. The NPA applied the same legal standards and prosecutorial guidelines to all politically sensitive cases. 'Decisions are made based on the sufficiency of evidence, public interest, and the prospects of a successful prosecution. The NPA remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability, irrespective of the status or affiliation of those involved,' Kubayi said. Asked about measures to restore the independence, credibility and public trust in the NPA, Kubayi said addressing the NPA's operational and financial independence has been a long-outstanding issue. She also said since Batohi came to office, addressing aspects of the NPA's operational and financial independence has featured as one of the key strategic initiatives, including the NPA to obtain its own Accounting Officer in order to safeguard its financial independence.
