US stock futures near flat, but S&P 500 closes in on record high. Fed chair speaks again
U.S. stock futures are little changed, with the broad S&P 500 within striking distance of its record high. Around 7:08 a.m. ET, futures linked to the S&P 500 edged up 0.02%, or 1.25 points, to 6,147.50, while blue-chip Dow futures dipped 0.08%, or 35 points, to 43,389.00; and tech-heavy Nasdaq futures gained 0.15%, or 33.75 points, to 22,446.50. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield was flat at 4.293%. Oil's slide ended, with prices last up 0.99% at $65.01 per barrel. Oil prices had dropped two days in a row as it looked like Middle East oil supplies would remain intact. Stocks advanced during the day session after Israel and Iran agreed on a ceasefire. Though fragile -- both sides accused each other of having broken the pact within hours of it becoming effective -- investors seem to believe it will hold, or at least help keep the conflict contained and keep global oil supplies intact. As a result, oil prices slid for the second straight day. With Mideast tensions easing, investors will turn their attention to the second day of Federal Reserve Chairman Jermome Powell's testimony to Congress. In his first appearance, he stayed on script, repeating his "wait-and-see" approach to rate cuts. He said the economy was stable enough now to see how tariffs affect inflation before deciding on any rate cuts. FedEx's results topped analysts' estimates in the last three months of its fiscal year, but its current quarter outlook was weaker than expected. Shares were down 5.82% in pre-market trade. Worthington Enterprises' fiscal fourth-quarter results came in better than forecasts. Shares rose 11.39% ahead of the opening bell. Tesla sold just 13,863 vehicles in Europe last month, down 28% from a year earlier, the worst-performing major manufacturer in Europe through May, according to sales data from the local association of car manufacturers, ACEA. The electric vehicle maker's shares are fractionally higher in pre-market activity. AeroVironment's results beat foreacsts in the final three months of its fiscal year but full-year earnings guidance was below expectations. Shares rose fractionally ahead of the open. QuantumScape announced a breakthrough in its process for making solid-state batteries. Shares soared 34.87% pre-bell. BlackBerry raised its annual sales guidance after reporting better-than-expected quarterly results. Shares gained 9.24% in pre-market trade. The New York Stock Exchange filed for a rule change to allow it to list the Truth Social Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF. Bitcoin was last up 0.85% at $106,942.90. ForSight Robotics raises $125m for cataract surgery robotic platform
Israel-based ForSight Robotics has completed a Series B funding round, raising $125m to fuel the growth phase of the robotic surgery platform intended for cataract and other eye conditions. Claimed to be a world first, the ORYOM platform is tailored to reduce the physical load on surgeons and improve surgical precision. ForSight is gearing up to introduce first-in-human trials within the year. Spearheaded by Eclipse, the round also included substantial contributions from an undisclosed investor, alongside Intuitive Surgical founder Dr Fred Moll, Reiya Ventures, the Adani Group, and other current investors. This latest financial injection brings the company's total funding to $195m. ForSight noted that the platform leverages AI-based algorithms, computer vision, and micromechanics to provide manoeuvrability and dexterity. Capable of reaching any point in the human eye, the platform claims to facilitate navigation through difficult angles and ensures access to anterior and posterior segments, enabling future glaucoma and retinal surgical treatments. Using the platform, more than 24 ophthalmic surgeons have already performed several procedures on animal eye models. The company plans to begin robotic cataract surgery clinical trials in the upcoming year. ForSight Robotics' chief medical officer, president, and co-founder Dr Joseph Nathan said: 'We see ophthalmology as the next frontier in the robotics revolution – much like general surgery was before the rise of Intuitive Surgical. With a comparable market size and an urgent global need, our opportunity ahead is immense. 'Through our latest funding round, we will bring the same level of transformative impact to eye surgery, with technology designed specifically for its unique precision and complexity.' ForSight has formed a strategic advisory board comprising leaders in surgical robotics. They include MAKO Surgical Corp founder Rony Abovitz and Dr Fred Moll, who recently joined ForSight's board of directors.
