Marine heatwave poses growing risk to dugong population in Exmouth Gulf

An ongoing marine heatwave has left dugongs facing a critical food shortage in one of their most abundant feeding grounds off Western Australia's coast.
Researchers say persistently high ocean temperatures in the Exmouth Gulf, about 1,200 kilometres north of Perth, have scorched half of its seagrass species and could force herds of dugongs into less-sheltered waters.
It adds to the list of flow-on effects from a devastating marine heatwave that has gripped much of the WA coast since September.
"Previously there were four main species [of seagrass] there," Edith Cowan University (ECU) research associate Nicole Said explained.
Seagrass meadows carpeting large areas of the gulf have made it home to the second largest population of dugongs in WA, trailing only Shark Bay to the south.
Ms Said expected the marine flowering plant to be impacted by the warm conditions.
"We're not really sure what will happen from this," she said.
"Will [dugongs] change their preferred food source and start feeding on the species that's done really well?
"Or what we've seen in the past is that dugongs have moved out of the gulf into other areas to feed."
Heatwaves, heavy storms, and cool spells have diminished seagrass stock in the past, pushing dugongs out as pastures rebound — a process that can take two to three years.
Aerial surveys since the 1980s have revealed the gulf's 1,000-strong dugong population tends to migrate towards Ningaloo or Barrow Island when its main habitat is challenged.
Amid a marine heatwave in the summer of 2010–2011, the number of dugongs in the region dropped to a handful, with scientists recording a spike in deaths due to starvation.
ECU megafauna researcher Amanda Hodgson said more frequent and prolonged warming events, like the one underway, could put ecosystems on the verge of collapse.
"We haven't previously considered that Barrow Island area, where dugongs aren't necessarily normally found in high numbers, as an important dugong habitat," Dr Hodgson said.
"We need to consider that there are areas that might not normally represent critical habitat but, in fact, are becoming more critical as these extreme climate events keep happening more often."
Dr Hodgson's view is shared by Exmouth local and ecotourism operator Amelia Armstrong.
She described the situation as "horrifying" and called for immediate action.
"This whole system is connected and what we're doing here is going to have ongoing effects," Dr Armstrong said.
Dr Armstrong, who holds a PhD in manta ray research, was among the dozens of Exmouth residents at a community information session the state government's Exmouth Gulf Taskforce held last week.
The taskforce convened its final meeting the same day, ahead of delivering its report to recently appointed WA Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn by the end of next month.
In 2021, the state government pledged to create marine parks in southern and eastern portions of the gulf and appointed the taskforce to determine whether more areas needed to be protected.
An interim report made public last year recommended the whole of the Exmouth Gulf be conserved.
Dr Hodgson said the present marine heatwave strengthened community resolve to fight for the whole of the gulf to be made a marine park and reduce industrial pressures.
In contrast, residents who attended a community session in Onslow told the ABC they were worried wider protections could hamstring their local economy.
Retiree Felicity Brennan agreed the gulf's south, which includes a major prawn fishery and marine nursery, should be protected.
But she warned too broad a brush could come at the expense of a town that lacks the same tourist pull as Exmouth.
"This place is a working town," she said.
Mr Swinbourn defended his government's approach.
"The scale of the heatwave is beyond our small population and large coastline," he said.
Mr Swinbourn said he was confident the Exmouth Gulf Taskforce could incorporate the early effects of the heatwave into its report, and that the DBCA would continue to monitor its long-term impact.

Cardea 3 has seen some historical exploration with 422 vacuum drill holes completed to date. Of these, 139 have been analysed for available alumina and reactive silica. Results from this work indicate that high-grade bauxite is present with available alumina – the portion of Ai2O3 that can be extracted under Bayer process conditions – exceeding 34.5% and reactive silica content of 3.14%. This compares very favourably with the average mining grades of 28.7% available alumina and 1.9% reactive silica at South32's (ASX:S32) nearby Worsley Alumina Operations. Surface bauxite mineralisation has also been defined over a 3km by 1km area with a laterite profile typical of Darling Range bauxite deposits. 'We are extremely pleased with the acquisition of the Cardea 3 project, which provides significant scalability and strong potential to further increase both bauxite tonnage and grade through continued exploration—particularly in the western portion of the exploration licence area,' non-executive director Pedro Kastellorizos said. 'The project's proximity to a multi-user railway, within trucking distance, is a key logistical advantage, especially in the current market environment of record alumina and bauxite prices.' Pic: Western Yilgarn Cardea 3 project Cardea 3 sits within the Darling Scarp Bauxite Province – a key bauxite region centred on Pinjarra, Waroona and Worsley, which are major aluminium production hubs about 80km to 150km south of Perth. It is about 17.5km east of the company's Julimar West bauxite project and can be accessed from Perth via the Great Northern Highway and is well supported by the Perth Kalgoorlie Railway line to the south of the project area. Results from the vacuum drilling have indicated that the highest grade zones – exceeding 40% Ai2O3 - are concentrated in the central and southern portions of the exploration licence area. WYX added that data to date indicated that alumina and reactive silica for this deposit may be comparable to nearby bauxite mining operations such as the Worsley Alumina Operations. Surface and drilling geochemistry, along with the interpreted geophysics has highlighted multiple targets proximal to the west and south of the current tenure areas. Regional mapping and interpretation of the Western Australia Geological Survey has delineated laterite and pisolitic gravels in which the bauxite occurs. The Shire of Harvey has shown it 'gives a hoot' by becoming the newest South West shire to join the Owl Friendly movement. The move will see the shire eliminating the use of Second Generation Anti-Coagulant Rodenticides within shire-owned buildings and pushing to inform the community of the dangers of the insidious and lethal poison. The Owl Friendly movement initially stated in Margaret River when researchers looking at the elusive masked owl saw the impact SGARs were having on the native owl population. Since then, the movement has grown to cover shires and cities across the State, with the City of Cockburn, City of Geraldton and most recently the City of Stirling among just some of the Local governments across WA to adopt an Owl Friendly status. The movement specifically targets SGARs — often advertised as one dose, one kill poisons — which can take up to a week to kill an animal after ingesting and take a significant amount of time to break down once in the environment. Due to the poison's longevity and its delay in causing death, rodents which have ingested the poison can be caught and devoured by other animals — such as owls, snakes or even pet dogs and cats — delivering the deadly dose intended to the rodent its devourer instead. The poison has proved so pervasive it has been found in possums across Australia and has been found at lethal levels within a critically endangered Carnaby's black-cockatoo. In an even more recent Edith Cowan University-led research paper SGARs were found in five of Australia's large native carnivores from WA's chuditch to the critically endangered Tasmanian devil. SGARs have been banned in the United Kingdom and California, but still are able to be purchased on the shelf in most Australian stores. The move to make the Shire of Harvey Owl Friendly came from shire president Michelle Campbell who said it was a simple act the shire could adopt, and came at an apt time with the shire also voting to adopt its first biodiversity strategy earlier in the meeting. 'We are not the first local government to consider this and hopefully not the last moving forward,' she said. 'Second generation rodenticides are indiscriminate and the eradication of its use will not only be beneficial to owls and birds, but also to many other native animals and our domestic pets.'

Ruffling feathers in all the right ways is Sarah Rewi, a young researcher blending Mātauranga Māori and Western science through her work studying the muttonbird in Aotearoa New Zealand. With a Master's and soon-to-be PhD under her wing, Sarah shared with Nesia Daily that her inspiration for studying seabirds initially began at her aunty's dinner table when she was served her favourite dish: muttonbird. "I was kind of sitting in my undergraduate studies and we were being shown all this research about how they test our fisheries in New Zealand to make sure that our snapper and prawns, and all of these things are safe for us to eat," she said. "And that kind of led me down a path of Indigenous food sovereignty harvesting practices, and who's actually looking out for the health of our communities from that kind of long-term scientific perspective?" As Sarah soon found out, the answer was "no one". Sarah's research focuses on three species of the muttonbird - the tītī (shaggy shearwater), the ōi (grey faced petrel), and the toanui (flesh-footed shearwater). ( Supplied ) Often there is tension between Western ideas of conservation and Indigenous practices, a gap the young Māori academic is trying to bridge with her research. "They think that our practices are a threat to these communities, but from our side, it's our way of honouring our relationship with these birds. "A conservation approach is - we look, we don't touch, we build fences around their habitats and try to keep rats away - and that's all we do. "But when I spoke with a lot of my whanau and communities through my research, there was this pain of being separated from a relative, of having a connection to a part of ourselves cut off for generations, and a desire to see those harvesting practices brought back." ( Supplied ) As part of her PhD with the University of Auckland, Sarah is examining how seabirds like the muttonbird are able to shed toxins and heavy metals from the ocean through their feathers. However, with pollution and anthropogenic activities causing extremely high levels of mercury, lead, and zinc in the ocean, the concern is that "the next few generations of birds may not be as successful at removing very high concentrations of very toxic metals". "Of course, the concern for our Indigenous communities is are we consuming those metals which are very poisonous?" Beyond her PhD, Sarah's long-term goal is to open up a Māori-led research centre and have "the knowledge and resources return to our communities". "To be able to have our own people that understand the context of our relationship with these birds in those spaces, I think will yield very unique solutions and research."
