RCB and Virat Kohli end 18-year wait for IPL glory with six-run defeat of Punjab Kings
Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Virat Kohli ended a 17-season drought by winning their maiden Indian Premier League title, beating Punjab Kings by six runs in the final in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.
Bengaluru posted a modest 190 for nine with Kohli, their leading scorer this season, top scoring for them with a composed 43. It was, however, their bowling which secured their win after they restricted Punjab to 184 for seven despite Shashank Singh's unbeaten 61 off 30 balls.
Kohli was in tears once he realised Bengaluru were about to shed the underachiever tag that has stuck to them since the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008.
Put in to bat at a packed Narendra Modi Stadium, Bengaluru could not stitch together significant partnerships and fell short of the 200 mark. Kohli anchored their innings but Bengaluru could never really break loose.
Bengaluru were 87for two at the midway stage but with enough overs left for other players to bat around Kohli. Azmatullah Omarzai deceived Kohli with a bouncer and took a running, tumbling return catch to dismiss the batter. Jitesh Sharma's 24 off 10 balls injected some momentum into Bengaluru's stop-start innings and Liam Livingstone made 25 but the side could not really capitalise in the final overs.
Punjab's Kyle Jamieson took three for 48, while his new ball partner, Arshdeep Singh, bowled an excellent three-wicket final over, conceding only three runs.
Punjab got off to a rollicking start in their chase and opener Prabhsimran Singh, then on nine, was lucky to be spilled in the deep by Romario Shepherd. Josh Hazlewood, the luckless Bengaluru bowler, did not have to wait long for success though, as Phil Salt took a stunning catch in the deep to remove Priyansh Arya (24) and break the 43-run opening stand.

Krunal Pandya removed Prabhsimran and Shepherd redeemed himself by dismissing Punjab's in-form captain, Shreyas Iyer, to turn the match on its head. Left-arm spinner Pandya put Bengaluru on top when he dismissed the dangerous Josh Inglis (39) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar effectively sealed the match in Bengaluru's favour when he dismissed Nehal Wadhera and Marcus Stoinis in the same over.

Three baby penguins in a Mumbai zoo must be stripped of their English names and given local ones instead, India's ruling BJP party has demanded. Leaders of the Right-wing Hindu nationalist party, led by Narendra Modi, the prime minister, said three-month-old Noddy, Tom and Pingu were born in the state of Maharashtra and should therefore have Marathi names. This week, he led a protest outside the zoo, where demonstrators were seen holding penguin cutouts with red crosses over their disputed names. Mr Bankar warned that the protests could continue and said he would try to have the zoo shut down if the chicks were not given Marathi names within 10 days. Despite initial concerns that penguins would not survive India's heat, the birds have become a major attraction since the zoo acquired eight Humboldt penguins from South Korea in 2016. Zoo authorities have received praise for successfully breeding penguin chicks, which have so far been given English names such as Flipper, Daisy, Bubble, Mr Molt and Dory. The birds are monogamous and known for their lifelong pair bond with Mr Molt, the youngest male, and Flipper, the oldest female, becoming the zoo's most celebrated couple. The penguins are kept within a climate-controlled 1,800 sq ft enclosure fitted with surveillance cameras, rocky terrain, synthetic ponds, and ice features. Most other animals at the zoo have been given names of Indian origin. The penguin controversy comes as political parties gear up for the upcoming municipal elections in Mumbai, which have often been fought over cultural identity issues.

BENGALURU, India, June 5 (Reuters) - Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru have pledged one million Indian rupees ($11,654) to each family of the 11 fans who died in a crowd surge outside the team's home stadium on Wednesday during celebrations following their maiden IPL title. The franchise will also launch a support fund for the injured. At least 11 people died and 47 were injured in the crowd surge as thousands of people lined the streets around the Chinnaswamy Stadium as the team's bus arrived. Bengaluru were celebrating their win over Punjab Kings in the final of the IPL's 18th edition, the world's richest T20 cricket league. The team had given away free passes for the event on their website but said that numbers would be limited. As the celebrations continued, some fans without passes tried to push through the gates while others climbed trees and the stadium wall for a better view. Images from the scene showed people climbing over each other. "The unfortunate incident in Bengaluru yesterday has caused a lot of anguish and pain to the RCB family," the team said in a statement on Thursday. "As a mark of respect and a gesture of solidarity, RCB has announced a financial support of 10 lakh (one million) Indian Rupees to each of the 11 families of the deceased. "In addition, a fund called RCB Cares is also being created to support fans injured in this tragic incident." Karnataka State Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who uses only one name, said the venue could not handle the size of the crowd, adding that the stadium's capacity was 35,000 but 200,000 to 300,000 people had turned up for the celebrations.
