Nineteen tiger beetle species found in Dudhwa Tiger Reserve

Hans India4 days ago
Lakhimpur KheriBiodiversity-rich Dudhwa Tiger Reserve has been found to be home to 19 species of tiger beetle insects, with four of them discovered for the first time in Uttar Pradesh, a recent survey recorded.
The survey was carried out under the 'Tiger Beetle India Fest 2025' organised for the first time by Tamil Nadu-based NGO, Rhopalocera and Odonata Association of Rajapalayam (ROAR).
The tiger beetle is a fast, predatory insect known for its vibrant, metallic colours and agile hunting skills. It derives its name from its tiger-like style of chasing and hunting its prey.
Vipin Kapoor Sainy, field biologist and outreach programme head at DTR, who carried out a survey in Dudhwa along with WWF-India project officer Rohit Ravi, said, 'The survey for documentation of tiger beetles in Dudhwa was just the second survey in Uttar Pradesh, with the earlier survey reported to have been carried out in 1980.'
Sainy added that 'the survey resulted in the discovery of 19 species of tiger beetles in Dudhwa, four species, namely 'Lophyra mutiguttata', 'Rhytidophaena', 'Cicindela cyanea' and 'Cylindera venosa' had never been recorded earlier in Uttar Pradesh,' he said.
Sainy said, 'The tiger beetle quest highlighted Dudhwa's remarkable biodiversity, reaffirming it as one of India's premier biodiversity hotspots, where even the smallest creatures like tiger beetles were celebrated and documented.'
Elated with the discovery, Field Director Dr H Rajamohan said conservation was not restricted just to charismatic megafauna like tigers and rhinos but to the other smaller species.
The discovery of 19 species under the Tiger Beetle India Fest reflected their commitment to documenting and protecting the lesser-known yet ecologically significant species, he added. Deputy Director, DTR Jagdish R, said the documentation of 19 species of tiger beetle highlighted the hidden diversity thriving within Dudhwa's rich ecosystems. The tiger beetle quest was not merely a science event, but a collaborative effort to draw attention towards arthropods often overlooked, he added.
V Sharan, Founder Director of ROAR and organiser of the Tiger Beetle India Fest 2025, said he was sceptical about the event as not many citizen scientists or nature observers were familiar with tiger beetles.
'However, the amount of response received and the kind of information collected through the fest had highlighted its success,' he added.

Unregulated activity added to Dharali devastation: Experts

Dehradun: Unchecked construction and human interference in the ecologically fragile Bhagirathi Eco-Sensitive Zone (BESZ) -- spanning 4,179 sq km from Gaumukh to Uttarkashi -- may have significantly worsened the impact of the flood that ravaged Dharali village near Gangotri in Uttarkashi district, according to environmentalists. Experts said that the scale of devastation points to deeper, systemic issues rooted in years of unregulated development in one of the Himalayas' most vulnerable regions. Calling for urgent reforms and stricter enforcement of land-use regulations along the Bhagirathi River and its tributaries, Mallika Bhanot, a member of BESZ monitoring committee, said, "This once again shows how vulnerable the Himalayas are, and we must wake up and stop playing with our environment. Any vulnerable area requires protection and conservation. Unregulated anthropogenic (human-induced environmental change) activity only adds to the risk, as was evident in the shocking footage of the Kheer Ganga stream turning into a torrent. " Other ecologists echoed similar concerns, pointing out that rampant construction in floodplains disrupts natural drainage, accelerates land degradation and contributes to rising carbon emissions -- all of which can impact local microclimates. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like World's 25 Best Cities to Live In Learn More Undo "These carbon footprints are very high and carry serious implications for the surrounding ecosystem," said professor Sunil Nautiyal of the Centre for Ecological Economics and Natural Resources, Karnataka, and former director of GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment. He added, "The Himalayan ecology is uniquely vulnerable, with many species classified as keystone or highly sensitive to even minor environmental shifts. We must begin accounting for the carbon cost of all development in these fragile zones." Nautiyal also stressed the urgent need for valley-specific weather and climate monitoring systems. "Regular, intensified monitoring is essential to understand the evolving impacts of climate change across different Himalayan valleys. With telemetric weather stations covering all hoblis (a cluster of adjacent villages) and 6,500 rain gauge systems across gram panchayats, Karnataka offers a model that must be replicated across Himalayan states to strengthen climate monitoring infrastructure," he added. On the ground, residents said the push to boost tourism revenue is fuelling unsustainable development. "In the race to earn from tourism, tree felling and construction are happening at an unprecedented scale. There are no robust systems in place to manage disasters in vulnerable stretches of BESZ, despite the region having witnessed similar devastating floods in the past," said Suresh Bhai, an Uttarkashi-based environmentalist and founder of the Himalaya Bachao Andolan. Amid mounting concerns over regulatory oversight in the region, officials pointed to jurisdictional limitations. "The area where the flash flood occurred doesn't fall under our jurisdiction. As it lies in an eco-sensitive zone, clearances must have come from the stipulated authorities," said Vineet Rastogi, executive engineer at Uttarkashi District Level Development Authority.

India, Philippines elevate ties to strategic partnership; focus on defence, Indo-Pacific

New Delhi, Aug 5 (UNI) India and the Philippines elevated their bilateral relationship to a "strategic partnership" following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. The move marks a significant upgrade in ties as the two nations seek to deepen cooperation across defence, trade, and the Indo-Pacific region. Addressing the media after delegation-level talks, Prime Minister Modi said, 'Dialogue at every level and cooperation in every sector have long defined our relations. Today, we held extensive discussions on mutual cooperation, regional issues, and the global situation. I am pleased to announce that we have agreed to elevate our ties to a strategic partnership.' Modi said a comprehensive action plan has been formulated to translate the potential of this new partnership into tangible results. 'Our bilateral trade continues to grow and has crossed USD 3 billion. To strengthen this further, we will prioritise the early completion of the India-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement review and move towards a bilateral Preferential Trade Agreement,' he said. 'The Philippines is a key partner in India's Act East Policy and SAGAR vision (Security and Growth for All in the Region). We are committed to peace, security, prosperity, and a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region. We support freedom of navigation in accordance with international law,' he said, highlighting India's broader East Asia policy. Highlighting the finalisation of the science and technology cooperation plan, PM Modi said, 'Indian companies are working in sectors such as information and digital technology, healthcare, automobiles, infrastructure, and minerals. In science and technology, joint research is underway — from virology to AI and additive manufacturing.' The regional centre of the International Rice Research Institute in Varanasi is working on ultra-low glycemic index rice. 'In other words, we are working together on both taste and health. I am happy to share that, under our Development Partnership, we will increase the number of Quick Impact Projects in the Philippines and support the development of sovereign data cloud infrastructure there,' Modi said. 'Our partnership on Earth is already strong — and now, we are preparing to collaborate in space as well. An agreement for this was signed today,' he added. The two sides also reaffirmed their commitment to peace, security, and a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific. 'India and the Philippines are friends by choice and partners by destiny. We are committed to freedom of navigation in accordance with international law,' Modi said, while also thanking the Philippine government for condemning the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and expressing solidarity with India. 'Our growing defence ties are a sign of deep mutual trust. As maritime nations, maritime cooperation between our countries is both natural and necessary. We have worked together in humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and search and rescue operations. Today, while the President is in India, three Indian Navy ships are, for the first time, participating in a naval exercise in the Philippines. India's hydrography ship is also taking part,' Modi noted. 'We welcome Philippines' participation in the International Fusion Center set up by India for the Indian Ocean Region. We express our gratitude to the Government of the Philippines and the President for strongly condemning the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and for standing with us in our fight against terrorism,' he said. The agreements signed today on Mutual Legal Assistance and the Transfer of Sentenced Persons will further strengthen security cooperation between the two nations. Emphasising that the Cultural Exchange Programme signed today would further promote historic cultural ties, Prime Minister Modi also welcomed the Philippines' decision to offer visa-free entry to Indian tourists. India, in turn, has decided to offer free e-visas to tourists from the Philippines. Work is also underway to start direct flights between Delhi and Manila later this year. In his remarks, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and underscored the significance of his visit, noting that he is the fifth Philippine President to visit India. 'This is a momentous decision to elevate our ties to a strategic partnership,' he said, adding that both sides had agreed to expand defence cooperation and promote naval and coast guard interoperability in the maritime domain. He highlighted the two countries' shared interest in ensuring safe navigation and maritime security in the Indo-Pacific, and reaffirmed the Philippines' commitment to a free, open, and rules-based regional order. 'We both have high stakes in the Indo-Pacific. As the incoming Chair of ASEAN, I thank Prime Minister Modi for his strong support,' President Marcos said. "We have decided to expedite the work on bilateral trade agreement, Visa free entry to Indian tourists to visit Philippines," President said. He also welcomed the resumption of private flights from October highlighting that safe navigation and security are also underscored the fact that both the countries have "high stakes in the free and open Indo-Pacific region". He said that as an "incoming chair of ASEAN, I thank PM for his support." UNI AAB PRS

Hyd startup EON Space Labs raises $1.2M in Pre-Series A funding

Hyderabad: EON Space Labs, a Hyderabad-based deeptech startup focused on building advanced imaging technologies, has raised $1.2 million (approximately 10.5 crore) in a Pre-Series A funding round from MGF Kavachh and HHV Advanced Technologies, both of whom have also come on board as strategic partners. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Set up in 2022 by three former LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) employees—Punit Badeka, Sanjay Kumar, and Manoj Kumar Gaddam—the T-Hub and IIT-Madras incubated EON is building miniaturised, high-resolution imaging systems for use in satellites, drones, unmanned aerial systems, and fixed ground platforms. The company was also a winner of one of the iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) challenges and Ramaiah Evolute. The startup said the funds will support the launch of MIRA, touted as India's lightest high-res space telescope that is three to four times lighter and smaller than currently available space telescopes, later this year in a mission in collaboration with another Hyderabad-based startup, TakeMe2Space, that plans to launch India's first AI laboratory in space aboard Indian Space Research Organisation's launch vehicle. "MIRA is a monolithic telescope that has been manufactured using ultra-precision technology and is made from a single piece of fused silica glass, a space-qualified material. We reduced the moving components into one single block of pure silica glass," Badeka said. The fundraise will also help fund the launch of four new LUMIRA electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR or day & night) imaging systems designed for long-range detection of humans, vehicles, threats, and UAVs to enhance surveillance capabilities for both drone and ground-based platforms for surveillance and disaster response. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The LUMIRA variants will target up to 85% of the use cases in the global EO/IR surveillance market, which is currently pegged at around $11 billion. EON already bagged multiple commercial orders for LUMIRA following successful proof of concept demonstrations.
