Nineteen tiger beetle species found in Dudhwa Tiger Reserve
The survey was carried out under the 'Tiger Beetle India Fest 2025' organised for the first time by Tamil Nadu-based NGO, Rhopalocera and Odonata Association of Rajapalayam (ROAR).
The tiger beetle is a fast, predatory insect known for its vibrant, metallic colours and agile hunting skills. It derives its name from its tiger-like style of chasing and hunting its prey.
Vipin Kapoor Sainy, field biologist and outreach programme head at DTR, who carried out a survey in Dudhwa along with WWF-India project officer Rohit Ravi, said, 'The survey for documentation of tiger beetles in Dudhwa was just the second survey in Uttar Pradesh, with the earlier survey reported to have been carried out in 1980.'
Sainy added that 'the survey resulted in the discovery of 19 species of tiger beetles in Dudhwa, four species, namely 'Lophyra mutiguttata', 'Rhytidophaena', 'Cicindela cyanea' and 'Cylindera venosa' had never been recorded earlier in Uttar Pradesh,' he said.
Sainy said, 'The tiger beetle quest highlighted Dudhwa's remarkable biodiversity, reaffirming it as one of India's premier biodiversity hotspots, where even the smallest creatures like tiger beetles were celebrated and documented.'
Elated with the discovery, Field Director Dr H Rajamohan said conservation was not restricted just to charismatic megafauna like tigers and rhinos but to the other smaller species.
The discovery of 19 species under the Tiger Beetle India Fest reflected their commitment to documenting and protecting the lesser-known yet ecologically significant species, he added. Deputy Director, DTR Jagdish R, said the documentation of 19 species of tiger beetle highlighted the hidden diversity thriving within Dudhwa's rich ecosystems. The tiger beetle quest was not merely a science event, but a collaborative effort to draw attention towards arthropods often overlooked, he added.
V Sharan, Founder Director of ROAR and organiser of the Tiger Beetle India Fest 2025, said he was sceptical about the event as not many citizen scientists or nature observers were familiar with tiger beetles.
'However, the amount of response received and the kind of information collected through the fest had highlighted its success,' he added.

He added, "The Himalayan ecology is uniquely vulnerable, with many species classified as keystone or highly sensitive to even minor environmental shifts. We must begin accounting for the carbon cost of all development in these fragile zones." Nautiyal also stressed the urgent need for valley-specific weather and climate monitoring systems. "Regular, intensified monitoring is essential to understand the evolving impacts of climate change across different Himalayan valleys. With telemetric weather stations covering all hoblis (a cluster of adjacent villages) and 6,500 rain gauge systems across gram panchayats, Karnataka offers a model that must be replicated across Himalayan states to strengthen climate monitoring infrastructure," he added. On the ground, residents said the push to boost tourism revenue is fuelling unsustainable development. "In the race to earn from tourism, tree felling and construction are happening at an unprecedented scale. There are no robust systems in place to manage disasters in vulnerable stretches of BESZ, despite the region having witnessed similar devastating floods in the past," said Suresh Bhai, an Uttarkashi-based environmentalist and founder of the Himalaya Bachao Andolan. India, Philippines elevate ties to strategic partnership; focus on defence, Indo-Pacific
New Delhi, Aug 5 (UNI) India and the Philippines elevated their bilateral relationship to a "strategic partnership" following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. The move marks a significant upgrade in ties as the two nations seek to deepen cooperation across defence, trade, and the Indo-Pacific region. Addressing the media after delegation-level talks, Prime Minister Modi said, 'Dialogue at every level and cooperation in every sector have long defined our relations. Today, we held extensive discussions on mutual cooperation, regional issues, and the global situation. I am pleased to announce that we have agreed to elevate our ties to a strategic partnership.' Modi said a comprehensive action plan has been formulated to translate the potential of this new partnership into tangible results. 'Our bilateral trade continues to grow and has crossed USD 3 billion. To strengthen this further, we will prioritise the early completion of the India-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement review and move towards a bilateral Preferential Trade Agreement,' he said. 'The Philippines is a key partner in India's Act East Policy and SAGAR vision (Security and Growth for All in the Region). We are committed to peace, security, prosperity, and a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region. 'We both have high stakes in the Indo-Pacific. As the incoming Chair of ASEAN, I thank Prime Minister Modi for his strong support,' President Marcos said. "We have decided to expedite the work on bilateral trade agreement, Visa free entry to Indian tourists to visit Philippines," President said. The company was also a winner of one of the iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) challenges and Ramaiah Evolute. The startup said the funds will support the launch of MIRA, touted as India's lightest high-res space telescope that is three to four times lighter and smaller than currently available space telescopes, later this year in a mission in collaboration with another Hyderabad-based startup, TakeMe2Space, that plans to launch India's first AI laboratory in space aboard Indian Space Research Organisation's launch vehicle. "MIRA is a monolithic telescope that has been manufactured using ultra-precision technology and is made from a single piece of fused silica glass, a space-qualified material. We reduced the moving components into one single block of pure silica glass," Badeka said. The fundraise will also help fund the launch of four new LUMIRA electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR or day & night) imaging systems designed for long-range detection of humans, vehicles, threats, and UAVs to enhance surveillance capabilities for both drone and ground-based platforms for surveillance and disaster response.
