SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Across the commonwealth, many courthouses are driving home the importance of preventing abuse, including here at home.
The Children's Advocacy Center (CAC) of northeastern Pennsylvania hosted its annual Pinwheels for Prevention event at Courthouse Square in Downtown Scranton.
The eye-catching display serves as a very solemn reminder that each pinwheel planted on the lawn at the Lackawanna County Courthouse represents a child who has been abused.

'Child abuse is a community problem, unfortunately, and so we think it takes a community response. So it's everything from the judicial level, the prosecutor level, law enforcement, caseworkers, families, anyone that a child is willing to speak, to speak up to, they have a duty and responsibility to respond,' said CAC of NEPA Executive Director Meghan Lennox Gagorik.
In all, 555 pinwheels are on display just in Lackawanna County.

Man arrested for sexual assault of girl in Tyler Planet Fitness parking lot

SMITH COUNTY, Texas (KETK) – A man was arrested for a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child in Tyler on Thursday, Smith County Jail records show. AFFIDAVIT: Parent arrested for giving vodka-laced Jell-O shots to kids at Tyler elementary Christmas party The Tyler Police Department began looking into the case on April 16 after they were dispatched to the UT Health ER in Tyler in regard to a sexual assault call they received. Once at the ER, officers reported that they spoke with a nurse who informed them that an underage girl from a group home was brought in by her caregiver and believed to have had sexual relationships with an adult man, an arrest affidavit showed. While at the ER, the victim's caregiver informed detectives that the victim had run away on Monday, April 14 and did not return until the morning of April 15. Once the victim returned to the group home, she informed her caregiver that she had sexual intercourse with an unknown man while she was away, according to an arrest affidavit. Detectives later spoke with the victim about the alleged incident while at the ER. During the discussion, the victim stated that she had left the group home on April 14 and walked to the Walmart across the street from the home, where she encountered a Hispanic man in the parking lot driving a gray truck. According to officials, the victim stated that the man asked her to have sex with him in exchange for money and the two subsequently had sex inside his truck and the victim claimed she was not paid. On April 17, the victim was taken to the Smith County Child Advocacy Center (CAC) for a medical exam. During the exam, the doctor assigned to the victim stated that the victim was reluctant to discuss the reason for her visit and provided very little information about the incident. The victim did, however, restate that she did have sexual relations with the suspect inside his truck, according to the affidavit. The victim later had a forensic interview at the CAC on April 22 where she offered more information about what occurred. During the interview, the victim described the suspect as a bald Hispanic male who was wearing a yellow vest. The victim also stated that she could smell marijuana coming from his truck while he stopped to talk to her, according to the affidavit. Nacogdoches man arrested after stabbing, killing relative during argument, police say Later, the victim said the man picked her up near Jucy's Tacos before he drove the truck to a convenience store where the affidavit said he bought condoms. Then the man drove the victim to the Planet Fitness parking lot where the victim stated they had sex. After checking camera footage, detectives were able to identify the suspect's vehicle as a 2009 Ford F150. Detectives were later able to discover that the truck belonged to Ernesto Lopez-Ramirez, an affidavit revealed. After reviewing footage from the Wal-Mart and Planet Fitness parking lots on the day of the incident, officers began to believe Ramirez was responsible for sexually assaulting the victim, according to the affidavit. The footage obtained lined up with the statements the victim made during her forensic interview and a warrant was issued for Ramirez's arrest. Ramirez was then arrested for aggravated sexual assault of a child on Thursday and he's currently being held at the Smith County Jail. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Champaign Co. Children's Advocacy Center holds open house for Child Abuse Awareness Month

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — It's Child Abuse Awareness Month and the Champaign County Children's Advocacy Center wants children and families to know they're here to help. The center held an open house Friday to get the word out about their efforts to protect kids. It has been helping children for four decades. They took the opportunity to refresh people on their vital services at the open house. Workers Memorial Day in Champaign honoring two Central IL State Troopers 'Teachers, law enforcement, DCFS, all those those groups,' said CAC's deputy administrator, Elizabeth Lebs. 'We want them to know that we're here and remind them that we want to support them.'She has always wanted to help children, and said she found her perfect fit at the center.'I was really inspired to work with kids. I kind of have taken a roundabout path to get here,' she said. 'I was a teacher for a little bit. I did a few different things, but my passion has always been supporting kids and family.'CAC's executive director Dr. Lisa Liggins-Chambers said, before the center, children who were abused would have to talk about their experiences over and over. CAC uses a team approach where kids only have to recount their abuse once.'[We're] helping children who have been sexually abused or severely physically abused,' she said. 'So, it's a team approach to making sure that these children feel safe, supported and taken care of.' Lebs knows how difficult it can be for a child. She went through adversity as a kid, and said her experience doesn't make the job easier, but if she can help a child look towards a better future – that's what matters most. 'A lot of times when families come here, it's one of the worst days of their lives,' Lebs said. 'They're going through some really tough stuff.' Champaign County CAC has a couple of fundraisers coming up this summer. For more information on those, and how you can donate, you can visit their website here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Man booked in Polk County jail for kidnapping, sodomy at residential facility

BOLIVAR, Mo. — A green card holder from Sudan has been booked in the Polk County Jail for felony charges stemming from alleged sex crimes in a Bolivar residential facility last year. According to online court dockets, Mohamed Bade Ali, 19, was booked in the Polk County Jail on Monday, April 21, for charges of first-degree kidnapping and two counts of first-degree sodomy. The probable cause statement says a Bolivar Police Department officer attended a Children's Advocacy Center interview with the juvenile victim in October of 2024, where the victim reported that when he arrived at a Polk County residential facility in September of 2024, Ali and another juvenile would give him candy and soda, and would also 'hang out' with the victim. The victim said on a weekend night in September, he walked into Ali and the juvenile's room on the premise of a party taking place, but nobody else was there and they closed the door behind the victim. Ali allegedly held the victim down as the juvenile sexually assaulted the victim. Later, Ali allegedly sexually assaulted the victim, as well, according to the statement. The sexual abuse went on for a week, the statement says. The statement notes that while Ali is a Sudanese refugee, he does have a green card to be in the United States indefinitely and has been here for several years. Ali's case worker says Ali is not in danger of being deported. He was moved to another facility in St. Louis last year around the time that the probable cause statement was filed. Ali is currently booked in the Polk County Jail with a $50,000 bond. His case review is scheduled for May 23. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
