All Blacks see off late Pumas comeback
New Zealand scored four first half tries to grab a 31-10 lead at the break but then had to defend stoutly during the second 40 minutes.
Sevu Reece scored the All Blacks first try after just eight minutes when an overlap was created for him to cross the line untouched.
Argentina responded on the 15 minute mark when an overlap of their own allowed Rodrigo Isgro to score.
The home side then went under pressure when Mayco Vivas was yellow carded for an illegal clean out at a ruck.
Halfback Cortez Ratima scored the All Blacks second try after a break from Will Jordan.
The All Blacks closed out the first half strongly with two tries in the last five minutes.
Ardie Savea scored from a lineout maul, while Reece got his second out wide after the tourists decided to keep the ball in hand after a series of penalties.
Argentina got back into the game early in the second half with first five Tomas Albornoz cruising through some poor defence to touch down under the post.
They then dominated territory and possession which resulted in Billy Proctor being sin-binned.
Number eight Joaquin Oviedo scored their third try to close the gap to seven points with 18 minutes to play.
However the All Blacks eventually got their hands on the ball and again from a lineout were able to score their fifth try through Samisoni Taukei'aho.
Just minutes later the same lineout set-up added a sixth with Taukei'aho again getting the rewards.
The All Blacks were able to run out the game and score a comfortable win.
The two sides meet again in Buenos Aires next weekend.

For the Black Foils, it was a case of poor starts costing the team as they started all three fleet races on the second day of racing on the back foot. That saw them fall down the leaderboard after sitting second following the opening day of action. The day saw just 10 teams competing as the United States joined Brazil on the sidelines with a damaged boat. The Americans blew the nose off one of their hulls of their F50 catamaran in a collision with Great Britain in the last race on day one. The crash came as they failed to give room to the Brits, who had the right of way on starboard tack. The collision caused damage to both vessels, however the shore team were able to repair the British boat overnight and get it back onto the starting line. The Americans weren't in such a fortunate position with the damage their boat sustained, and they were also penalised 12 event points and eight season points for causing the incident. It seemed there were no ill effects of the damage caused to the British boat, either, as Dylan Fletcher and his team won two of the three fleet races this morning, finishing second to Switzerland in the third. It was a different day in terms of the conditions, with lighter, more patchy winds making for a testing racecourse with plenty of potential for error. The Black Foils found themselves chasing the fleet in all three races as they were consistently slow off the starting line. While they did find their way through the fleet throughout the day, a ninth and two fifth-placed finishes weren't enough to see them through to the podium race. It's the first time in the last three events that the Black Foils have missed the podium race, and it also saw them lose their spot at the top of the season leaderboard. The event saw things tighten up at the top in that regard, as France beat Australia and Great Britain in the podium race. The French went into the event sitting in sixth, with the Australians in second and the British in third. After the results in Germany, Australia take over the top spot - level on 61 points with the Black Foils - with Great Britain staying in third, three points back, and France moving up to fifth. Christopher Reive joined the Herald sports team in 2017, bringing the same versatility to his coverage as he does to his sports viewing habits.

OFC U-16 Men's Championship 2025 kicks off with stalemate between Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea
Aggressors throughout, Papua New Guinea spurned numerous chances and were forced to come from behind to secure a share of the points at Lawson Tama Stadium in Honiara. Appearing at the OFC U-16 Men's Championship for the first time since 2018 after progressing through the qualifying tournament earlier in the year, Papua New Guinea made a bright start and should have scored inside the first twelve minutes. First, Boas Tommy placed a close-range shot at Tearii Scheel following a cross off the right flank, before John Millis forced a save from the goalkeeper and spurned the rebound inches over the bar, all in the space of 90 seconds. Papua New Guinea remained on the front foot for the majority of the first half and came close again when Tommy had his effort blocked off the line by a Cook Islands defender just moments before the half-time interval. They were made to pay for those missed chances straight after the break, when the Cook Islands pressed high down the right flank, and substitute Joseph Rua made an instant impact, picking out the bottom-left corner of the net on his right foot to open the scoring. Tommy was the top-scorer at the OFC U-16 Men's Championship Qualifying tournament in Tonga earlier in the year, but he was missing his shooting boots. He lifted a first-time effort over the crossbar, and then had another shot blocked off the goal-line as Papua New Guinea desperately went in search of an equaliser. The goal finally came in the 76th minute, when the Cook Islands cleared another Tommy effort, but John Millis turned the ball home on the rebound to level the scores. Both sides are back in Group A action on Wednesday, when Papua New Guinea face Tahiti, and the Cook Islands tackle Fiji. Cook Islands: 1 (Joseph RUA 47')

Netball: Tactix stalwart Jane Watson switches to Australia's Giants

Photo: Photosport Defender Jane Watson is the latest New Zealand netballer to confirm a move to Australia for the next Super Netball season. After 11 seasons with Mainland Tactix, including a championship-winning campaign this season, Watson will join the Sydney-based Giants in 2026. The 63-cap Silver Fern will play for the first time in the Australian domestic competition. Watson's "commanding presence, elite defensive skillset and calm leadership under pressure," has been highlighted by the Giants in a statement announcing her signing. Coach Nerida Stewart said Watson's signing was a significant addition to the squad. "Jane is such a respected figure in the game. She brings a wealth of experience, a calm presence and a real competitive edge that will really complement our group. "Her experience and calmness will be a great asset for our group, especially in high-pressure moments. She's the kind of player who leads by example, both on and off the court. "We're excited about the energy and professionalism she will bring to the team culture, and how she will contribute to our defensive end." Watson said she was excited for the move to Super Netball from the ANZ Premiership. "This marks a new chapter in my career and it's going to be a great opportunity to challenge myself, both on and off the court. "Change often brings growth and I'm really looking forward to testing myself in a new setting, working with different coaches and teammates, and continuing to evolve as a player and a person." Watson joins an exodus of New Zealand players - including current Silver Ferns Kelly Jackson , Maddy Gordon (both Queensland Firebirds) and Kate Heffernan (Adelaide Thunderbirds), as well as former Silver Fern Te Paea Selby-Rickit (Firebirds) - who will play Super Netball in 2026. Silver Ferns shooter Grace Nweke will also play another season with the NSW Swifts. Nweke's entry into Super Netball was a factor in Netball New Zealand changing its Silver Ferns eligibility rules .
