Luxury packaging is getting greener, lighter and smarter, says report
Luxury brands are reinventing their approach to packaging as sustainability becomes a key differentiator in the high-end sector, according to a joint report released by Bain & Company and Fedrigoni Group.
The report,
Luxury Packaging: Resolving the Tension Between Creativity and Impact
, forecasts that more than 30 per cent of all luxury packaging sales will adopt sustainable solutions within the next three years. Based on a survey of over 500 industry executives across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the report was launched at the 'Explore – Fedrigoni Creative Summit' held in Paris last month.
'Packaging is evolving from a static container into a dynamic brand touchpoint,' said Claudia D'Arpizio, senior partner and global head of the Fashion and Luxury practice at Bain & Company. 'It's no longer about choosing between beauty and responsibility. Today, you can — and must — deliver both.'
Traditionally defined by aesthetics and exclusivity, luxury packaging is now being reimagined to reflect environmental values. Brands are increasingly leveraging biodegradable materials, advanced papers, and even mycelium-based components, while slimming down designs to reduce emissions and logistical costs.
'Packaging has become a cultural symbol'
'Luxury today is as much about transparency and impact as it is about design,' said Marco Nespolo, CEO of
The group is a global manufacturer of specialty papers, self-adhesive materials, and RFID (radio-frequency identification tags.
'As manufacturers of premium papers, and self-adhesive and RFID materials, our role is to enable this transformation by delivering high-performance, creative and sustainable solutions. Being a true partner means co-developing with our clients an ecosystem where every material choice becomes a strategic, sustainable and narrative touchpoint,' Nespolo said.
The report highlights growing interest in the 'four Rs' (reduce, reuse, recycle, recover), with luxury-specific adaptations. QR codes, smart labels and augmented reality are enabling new digital storytelling tools, while the upcoming digital product passport (DPP) aims to provide full traceability across a product's lifecycle.
Reducing packaging weight and volume emerged as the top priority for sustainable supply chains, cited by 43 per cent of survey respondents. Reusable packaging followed at 25 per cent, with lightweight protective materials at 17 per cent.
Smart technology integration for tracking and condition monitoring was ranked lowest, at just 5 per cent.
Regulatory frameworks such as the EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation are accelerating these shifts. However, consumer demand is the primary driver, the report notes, with forward-looking brands already capitalising on the transformation.
'Sustainable packaging is no longer a constraint — it's a competitive edge,' said D'Arpizio. 'Those who invest early in material innovation and supply chain redesign will lead the next chapter of luxury.'
The report concludes that luxury packaging is becoming lighter, smarter and more symbolic of the industry's broader push toward sustainability, ethics and deeper consumer engagement.

Saudi Arabia's annual inflation accelerates to 2.3% in June
Inflation in Saudi Arabia accelerated to 2.3% in June compared to the same month last year and was also up slightly from 2.2% in May, government data showed on Tuesday. Inflation has hovered between 2% and 2.3% since the beginning of this year, mainly driven by rises in housing rents. It stood at 1.5% in June last year. Rents for housing increased by 7.6% due to villa prices rising by 7.1%, the General Authority for Statistics said. Housing was the primary reason for prices in the combined housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels category climbing to 6.5%. The Saudi government last month announced steps to balance Riyadh's real estate market, including setting aside some price-capped plots for Saudi citizens. Saudi Arabia also recently approved a new Real Estate Ownership and Investment Law, which will ease property purchases by foreigners when it takes effect next year. Saudi Arabia is in the process of building several massive new developments around Riyadh as part of its Vision 2030 program of diversifying the economy away from oil and boosting both tourism and the private sector. The new law is expected to balance out supply and demand in the long term, but is dependent on the success of the city's real estate projects getting completed on schedule. The International Monetary Fund expects Saudi inflation to remain steady at around 2%, supported by the riyal's peg to the U.S. dollar, domestic subsidies and "an elastic supply of expatriate labor".

President El-Sisi Meets the Prime Minister, Minister of Supply, Minister of Agriculture
Today, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held a meeting with Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Dr. Sherif Farouk, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa El-Din Farouk, and Executive Director of the 'Future of Egypt for Sustainable Development' Authority, Colonel Dr. Bahaa El-Ghanam. Spokesman for the Presidency, Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, said that during the meeting the availability of strategic reserves of essential commodities, particularly wheat, sugar, oil, meat, and poultry was confirmed. It was stressed that Egypt's food security is in a stable and reassuring state. The meeting reviewed details pertaining to contracts for the purchase of strategic commodities. These included contracts for the acquisition of 3.4 million tons of wheat, 192,000 tons of crude oil, 4,000 tons of frozen poultry, and 6,000 tons of frozen meat. Furthermore, it was noted that the State seeks to diversify its sources for wheat imports to ensure the availability of adequate quantities and avoid potential crises. President El-Sisi stressed the importance of full coordination among all state bodies concerned with food security, so as to ensure harmony among these institutions, facilitate their effective implementation and confirm alignment with state policies. The meeting highlighted the importance of cooperation among the relevant state authorities and 'The Future of Egypt' Authority to designate the areas within the New Delta to be cultivated with strategic crops, thereby maximizing planted acreage and increasing the self-sufficiency rate. The meeting also discussed efforts underway to ensure the efficient operation of bakeries, mills, and markets and reviewed progress on the "One-Day Market" initiative. The first phase of the initiative was launched in November 2024 with 200 markets, and the second phase began in May 2025 with more than 200 additional markets. The discussion tackled efforts to establish partnerships with the private sector, attract foreign investments in the retail sector, and establish commercial chains in Obour City, Nasr City, and Qalyub. The meeting also reviewed the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade's efforts and preparations to launch a government commercial chain under the name "Carry On", marking the first unified brand in partnership with the private sector. Furthermore, the meeting reviewed efforts exerted to develop internal trade and to refine the databases of government subsidy beneficiaries, ensuring that support reaches those who meet the relevant criteria and conditions. Additionally, the meeting included detailed discussions on food security, the operational status of the Commodity Exchange, and the government's efforts to activate it as a safeguard for markets and an effective price-regulation mechanism. This initiative is expected to boost food security and ensure the sustainable availability of essential goods at reasonable prices, balancing the interests of producers and consumers, while supporting the agricultural and industrial sectors. It was noted that exporters and importers have begun registering in the Commodity Exchange, which is set to become the unified platform for importing and exporting goods. A draft law is currently being prepared to regulate the exchange, drawing on legislation from other countries with similar systems. The meeting also reviewed the state's policies for growing and supplying strategic crops, efforts toward digital transformation and technological integration in agriculture, and strategies to reduce agricultural expenditures. The status of the fertilizer sector, particularly nitrates and urea was discussed, with a strong emphasis on implementing gradual and balanced reforms to protect farmers and ensure food security. Finally, the meeting focused on initiatives to improve agricultural land, adopt mechanization, and enhance the productivity of red meat and dairy sectors. President El-Sisi stressed the importance of improving local livestock breeds to increase their yield in both meat and milk production.
