Moon Not as ‘Geologically Dead' as Previously Thought, Study Reveals

Our planet's biggest satellite shows what seems like an unchanging face—the man in the moon never cracks a smile, after all—but a new study from a team including a University of Maryland researcher reveals that there's more going on beneath the lunar surface than previously believed.
In results reported earlier this month in The Planetary Science Journal, two Smithsonian Institution scientists and a UMD geologist discovered that features located on the moon's far side were notably younger than similar landforms previously studied on the near side—findings that could have implications for future human exploration of the moon.
'Many scientists believe that most of the moon's geological movements happened two and a half, maybe three billion years ago,' said Jaclyn Clark, an assistant research scientist. 'But we're seeing that these tectonic landforms have been recently active in the last billion years and may still be active today.'
Researchers have studied the moon's surface for decades to help piece together its complex geological and evolutionary history. Evidence from the lunar maria (dark, flat areas filled with solidified lava) suggested that the moon experienced significant shrinking in its distant past. Researchers suspected that large, arching ridges on its near side were formed by contractions that occurred billions of years ago—concluding that the moon's maria has remained dormant ever since.
Using advanced mapping and modeling techniques, the team found 266 previously unknown small ridges on the moon's far side that called that view into question. The ridges typically appeared in volcanic regions that likely formed 3.2 to 3.6 billion years ago in areas where there may be underlying weaknesses in the moon's surface, according to the researchers. To estimate the ridges' age, the researchers used a technique called crater counting that showed the features were notably younger than other features in their surroundings.
'Essentially, the more craters a surface has, the older it is; the surface has more time to accumulate more craters,' Clark explained. 'After counting the craters around these small ridges and seeing that some of the ridges cut through existing impact craters, we believe these landforms were tectonically active in the last 160 million years.'
Interestingly, Clark noted that the far-side ridges were similar in structure to ones found on the moon's near side, which suggests that both were created by the same forces, likely a combination of the moon's gradual shrinking and shifts in the lunar orbit. The Apollo missions detected shallow moonquakes decades ago; the new findings suggest that these small ridges might be related to similar seismic activity.
'We hope that future missions to the moon will include tools like ground-penetrating radar so researchers can better understand the structures beneath the lunar surface,' Clark said. 'Knowing that the moon is still geologically dynamic has very real implications for where we're planning to put our astronauts, equipment and infrastructure on the moon.'

The head of the Iraqi Chemists Syndicate, Raghad Al-Ajili, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "After our success as a syndicate in hosting the 2023 Arab Chemistry Olympiad, a first for Iraq, I decided to participate in the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad. I was able to access information about the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2024, which was held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia." She added, "Although registration was closed, I communicated with the organizing bodies through the support of the Iraqi Embassy in Riyadh, especially the Deputy Ambassador, Sadad Faiq, who played a pivotal role in conveying Iraq's voice. She was able to prepare and submit a comprehensive report including the mechanism for selecting outstanding students. This received the approval of the international jury, which granted Iraq a special exemption to participate in the Olympiad." Al-Ajili explained that "Iraq received three exemptions from the Higher Committee of the International Chemistry Olympiad and the jury, composed of 96 countries. These exemptions include direct participation without waiting two years, the inclusion of Iraqi professors in the scientific committee, and the granting of observer status to the Iraqi delegation." Al-Ajili concluded by saying, "I believe in the capabilities of our students, and we will work to raise Iraq's name high. Just as we were the cradle of chemistry through Jabir ibn Hayyan and the Babylonian scientist Tabuti, it is only natural that Iraq will return to the global scientific arena today with strength."

He added, "The nuclear project is used to produce clean energy, and I hope specialists will explain its uses to the public." He continued, "Resistance means standing up to the will of the superpowers," noting that "nuclear technology will not be achieved without enrichment to produce reactor fuel, and we will not extend our hands to others." He explained: "Even if we had 100 nuclear reactors, they would be useless without our own production of nuclear fuel. Our insistence on obtaining 20% enriched uranium from abroad led us to produce it domestically." He added, "Thousands of nuclear experts and scientists are being targeted by the Americans, who want them unemployed," adding that "American leaders are proposing to disrupt projects in all fields and oppose Iran's development." He explained that "the U.S. administration is making many claims about dismantling the Iranian nuclear project." He pointed out that "the United States is an accomplice in the crimes committed in the Gaza Strip. What is happening in the Strip is a real crime, and security in the region cannot be achieved by relying on the Zionist entity," adding that "the Zionist entity is doomed, and its end will not take long.

The Prime Minister's Media Office stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani received a delegation from the American company SpaceX (Starlink), which specializes in network, information, and communications technology. During the meeting, aspects of cooperation in the field of communications and the services provided by the company, as well as its coverage areas, were reviewed." During the meeting, the Prime Minister emphasized that "Iraq today boasts many promising investment opportunities in light of the state of growth and the rapid urban and service expansion it is witnessing." He pointed to "the importance of the strategic relationship with the United States within the framework agreement and other bilateral memoranda of understanding, which extend to various economic, scientific, and developmental fields." According to the statement, the Prime Minister directed "the relevant authorities to study ways to facilitate the work of SpaceX (Starlink) and expedite the necessary measures," expressing his "welcome to major technology companies, particularly American ones, to operate in Iraq and the possibility of their cooperation with the Iraqi private sector, within the government's vision for digital transformation." For its part, the company's delegation affirmed its "readiness to operate in Iraq, provide services, and cooperate in the Iraqi market," indicating that "Starlink services will contribute to digital transformation and its applications for public and private sector institutions, develop communications, and achieve economic prosperity within the framework of bilateral cooperation between Iraq and the United States."
