Amorim backs Sesko to shine at Manchester United, ready for Arsenal challenge
Sesko joined United from RB Leipzig in a deal worth up to £73.7 million (RM421 million) last Saturday.
Armed with the predatory instincts and physical stature, the 22-year-old Slovenian will spearhead Amorim's bid to revitalise United after their worst season since 1973-74.
Sesko could join fellow United new-boys Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in Amorim's overhauled attack, starting with Arsenal's visit to Old Trafford this weekend.
'He can play different types of football,' Amorim told reporters on Friday.
'He is going to learn but he has a great potential and I can see Ben being a striker for Manchester United for a lot of years.
'That's why we paid so much money to have a striker that will have his history in our club.'
Asked if Sesko could start against Arsenal, the United boss said: 'We didn't have a lot of time but he's ready.
'Physically, he's ready. That is a big component in our league. Then, he's really smart. Every detail that he asks, he's a guy that is always thinking.
'He spends all afternoon here working on his fitness, so he's ready to play. We will see if he's going to start.'
Sesko scored 21 goals for German side Leipzig last term and has made a good first impression on Amorim at United's new-look Carrington training complex.
'He's one guy who stays here, has lunch, and goes to the medical department, does the stretching,' he said.
'He is always thinking about football. He's really obsessed about that and that is a good thing because you don't have to think about that aspect with that young guy.
'I don't need to tell Ben, 'Ben, this is Manchester United, a lot of pressure, you have to perform, you need to be ready for the physicality, we need to be ready, every game is like do or die'.
Sesko's arrival in Manchester has raised fresh questions over the future of United striker Rasmus Hojlund.
The 22-year-old Denmark international has been strongly linked with an exit, just two years on from joining from Atalanta.
Hojlund said on United's pre-season tour that he wants to stay at United, but reports of a potential move to AC Milan persist.
'He is one more option,' Amorim said. 'We will see. We are focused on this game and Rasmus is still our player.' — AFP

Calafiori's goal gave Arsenal a 1-0 win over Manchester United
ARSENAL began their Premier League season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford. Riccardo Calafiori scored the decisive goal after capitalising on a goalkeeping error by United's stand-in shot-stopper Altay Bayindir. The Italian defender headed into an empty net after Bayindir misjudged a Declan Rice corner in the 13th minute. Despite dominating possession with over 60 percent, United failed to break down Arsenal's resilient defence. Ruben Amorim's side registered 22 shots but lacked the cutting edge against the league's best defensive unit. Manchester United's new £200 million forward line of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko struggled to make an impact. Amorim remained optimistic despite the defeat, insisting his team showed significant improvement from last season. 'We proved today we can win any game in the Premier League, against a great team like Arsenal,' said the Portuguese manager. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admitted his side were far from their best but praised their defensive resilience. 'Big result,' said Arteta. 'First game of the season at Old Trafford when you feel they are building something.' The Gunners relied on goalkeeper David Raya, who made several crucial saves to preserve the clean sheet. United's best chance came when Patrick Dorgu struck the post with a long-range effort in the first half. Substitute Benjamin Sesko, who rejected Newcastle to join United, received a warm welcome but couldn't inspire a comeback. Arsenal held firm to join Liverpool and Manchester City with three points on the opening weekend. The victory provides early momentum for Arteta's side in their pursuit of a first league title since 2004. - AFP - AFPpix

Chelsea held by Crystal Palace in Premier League opener
CHELSEA began their Premier League campaign with a frustrating 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace. The Blues, fresh from their Club World Cup triumph, lacked sharpness in attack. Palace thought they had taken an early lead through Eberechi Eze's free-kick. VAR intervened, ruling out the goal due to Marc Guehi obstructing Chelsea's wall. New signing Estevao came closest for Chelsea but failed to convert a promising chance. Palace's Guehi and Eze started despite transfer links to Liverpool and Tottenham. 'As long as they are 100 percent committed, they will play as they are so good,' said Palace boss Oliver Glasner. Eze's disallowed goal came after Guehi pushed Moises Caicedo into the defensive wall. Chelsea had hoped their Club World Cup win over PSG would boost their title ambitions. Manager Enzo Maresca cited limited pre-season preparation as a factor in their sluggish display. 'They played about eight (pre-season) games, we played just two so we tried our best,' said Maresca. Estevao, Chelsea's highly-rated Brazilian signing, struggled to find his finishing touch. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest started strongly with a 3-1 win over Brentford. Chris Wood scored twice, while Dan Ndyoe netted on his debut for Forest. Brentford's new boss Keith Andrews faced a tough start after key departures this summer. Thomas Frank, Bryan Mbeumo, and Christian Norgaard all left the Bees in the off-season. Yoane Wissa was also absent amid reports of a pending move to Newcastle. Igor Thiago's late penalty was Brentford's only consolation in a disappointing opener. 'I do have genuine belief but we have to take responsibility for a first half that wasn't good enough,' said Andrews. - AFP

Arteta: Winning without our best shows Arsenal's resilience
MANCHESTER: Arsenal's 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday was far from a masterful performance against the better side but manager Mikel Arteta was delighted to escape from Old Trafford with all three points in their Premier League season-opener. Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori took advantage of a weak challenge from Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir to head home an early corner and then the London side survived an onslaught of United attacks as they dug in to secure the win. "A big, big result coming into the first game of the season against (United) at Old Trafford," Arteta said after facing a side fielding new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. "When you feel that they are building something special and momentum with the new signings and they want to kick off the season in a good way and you are able to come away with the win, I'm very happy I'm part of the team." Arteta said his side, which spent nearly 200 million pounds ($266.30 million) in the close season after three consecutive second-place finishes, did a couple of things well on Sunday. "One, to take the set-piece and then react to especially mistakes," he said. "Some of them are necessary, some of them unusual. But the way every single player reacted to that gives us the opportunity to win the game. If not, it's impossible. And that's about how we compete and how much we want to take it." While United were the better team, Arteta said Arsenal winning while not at their best was a reason for confidence. "When you're not at your standards in certain aspects, which today we weren't, being fair, we can still come away and find a way to win the game," he said. "And the team has to find that resilience throughout the season for 10 months in different contexts to be able to do that. "Of course, we have to improve a lot of things and that will happen very soon. But in terms of managing to get that into a very positive result, that's a great way to do it." Arsenal's main close-season signing, Sweden striker Viktor Gyokeres, did not stand out on his Premier League debut and was substituted early in the second half.
