26/11 Mumbai terror attack: meet the new team of lawyers chosen to bring Tahawwur Rana to justice
The Centre on Thursday announced a team including Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta and Additional Solicitor-General S V Raju to lead the National Investigation Agency's prosecution against Tahawwur Rana, who has been extradited from the US nearly 16 years after his arrest for his role in the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks.
Last week, New Delhi's Patiala House Court sent Rana to judicial custody in Tihar Jail till June 6 after he was produced before Special NIA Judge Chander Jit Singh a day before his NIA custody ended. The NIA collected Rana's voice and handwriting samples before the judge.
In a gazette notification issued on Thursday, Abhijit Sinha, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, said, 'In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 15 of the NIA, read with sub-section (8) of section 18 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, the Central Government hereby appoints a team of Special Public Prosecutors headed by Tushar Mehta, Solicitor General of India with S V Raju, Additional Solicitor General along with Dayan Krishnan, Senior Advocate and Narender Mann, Advocate (already notified as Special Public Prosecutors) for conducting trial and other matters related to NIA case RC 04/2009/NIA/DLI on behalf of the National Investigation Agency before the NIA Special Courts at Delhi, Hon'ble High Court of Delhi and Hon'ble Supreme Court of India for a period of three years from the date of publication of this notification or till the completion of trial of the said case, whichever is earlier, on the terms and conditions as prescribed in Department of Legal Affairs' notification dated October 1, 2015.'
Senior advocate Dayan Krishnan and Special Public Prosecutor Narender Mann now represent the NIA before the Patiala House Court. Legal aid counsel Piyush Sachdev and Lakshya Dheer appeared for Rana.
Rana, a close associate of 26/11 main conspirator David Coleman Headley, was brought to India on April 10 after his extradition from the US.
Last month, the Centre formed a legal team headed by Krishnan, who is also considered an expert in extradition law and had led India's arguments for the extradition of Rana in a US court. He was also the special public prosecutor in the proceedings seeking the extradition of Headley, the Lashkar-e-Taiba scout for the 26/11 attacks, from the US. He was also part of a four-member team that visited Chicago to question Headley.
Rana is accused of aiding and abetting the reconnaissance carried out by Headley, with whom he went to school in Pakistan, for the 26/11 attacks and of participating in the conspiracy by providing crucial logistical support to the attackers.
Rana was arrested in Chicago in 2009, months after the Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008, in which 166 people were killed.

The Union Government has asked for a revision of the cost estimates for Bengaluru's Metro Phase 3A (Red Line), citing its exceptionally high projected cost. However, the revised cost structure and implementation timeline will now depend on the findings of the expert review and subsequent decisions by BMRCL. Rajasthan received ₹2,11,000 crore from Centre since 2014: Bhajan Lal Sharma
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) said the State had received ₹2,11,000 crore under the Centrally sponsored schemes since 2014, when the Narendra Modi government took over at the Centre. The nation had progressed fast under Mr. Modi's 'visionary leadership' during the last 11 years, Mr. Sharma said. Mr. Sharma inaugurated an exhibition showcasing the schemes and achievements of the Central government at the Bharatiya Janata Party's State headquarters here and addressed a press conference on the occasion. He described the last 11 years as an era of 'all-round performance' in every sphere of governance. 'Under the Modi government, the country is progressing fast with a balance evolved between economic development and promotion of the religious and cultural heritage,' Mr. Sharma said and described the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya, Kashi Vishwanath corridor in Varanasi and Mahakal Lok corridor in Ujjain as the instances of Sanatana Dharma's assertion. Referring to the support extended by the Centre to Rajasthan, Mr. Sharma said 4.50 crore people in the State had received free foodgrains under the Prime Minister's Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, 23 lakh people were given houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, and 9.60 lakh women had benefited from the flagship Lakhpati Didi Yojana. J&K's ‘dual control' leading to disconnect with people, says Congress leader Tariq Hameed Karra
The Congress on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) said the dual control of Jammu and Kashmir has 'immensely contributed to chaos leading to the disconnect and non-representation of people both at political as well as administrative level'. 'Disconnect and non-representation of people are apparently visible on the ground. The Centre is running away from the promises it made on the floor of Parliament to people of J&K. The Congress won't remain silent, we will continue to fight vigorously for the Statehood and safeguarding rights of our people, who have suffered enormously on all fronts due to the policies of BJP,' J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Hameed Karra said. The JKPCC has launched meetings of block presidents of three Lok Sabha segments of Kashmir region. 'The party will also be holding district level conventions under the slogan Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq shortly to reiterate Congress party's strong urge for restoration of complete statehood to J&K,' a Congress spokesman said. The first phase of district-level conventions mission Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq was completed in the Jammu region. Mr. Karra asked the district presidents and party workers 'to gear up for the upcoming district level political conventions, which will send a strong signal to the BJP government at the Centre that its diversionary tactics from the real issues concerning J&K will not be accepted'. 'The deliberate delay in restoration of Statehood will no longer work, Centre has to take urgent measures to restore statehood to J&K which has been snatched by a stroke of pen,' Mr. Karra said. He also asked BJP's J&K unit 'to clear its stand whether they are in favour of restoration of Statehood or not?'
