USC shakes off JuJu Watkins' absence and beats Kansas State 67-61 in March Madness
The top-seeded Trojans (31-3) were considered title contenders before Watkins tore her right ACL during a second-round victory over Mississippi State. Now they'll be underdogs in an Elite Eight rematch on Monday with Paige Bueckers and second-seeded UConn. The Huskies knocked the Trojans out of last year's March Madness in Watkins' first season.
Avery Howell, another freshman, scored 18 points for USC, which went on a 12-0 run during the third quarter to take a 46-39 lead, matching its biggest advantage of the day.
Kansas State (28-8) kept pushing, though, and tied it at 51-all early in the fourth on a layup by Ayoka Lee. Rayah Marshall responded with two straight buckets for USC.
A layup by Serena Sundell got the Wildcats within 60-59. Smith responded with a pair of free throws, and USC was solid enough at the foul line to close it out.
Sundell scored 22 points and Lee had 12 for the fifth-seeded Wildcats (28-8), who fell short of the program's second Elite Eight appearance and first since 1982. They beat Kentucky 80-79 in overtime to reach their first Sweet 16 since 2002.
Smith had 11 points in the opening quarter as the Trojans built 19-9 lead.
The Wildcats pulled ahead 19-16 after Sundell's layup and free throw. USC answered with a pair of 3-pointers from Howell and Malia Samuels.
Sundell hit a jumper and two free throws down the stretch to help Kansas State to a 30-28 advantage at the half.
USC arrived at Spokane Arena wearing Nike T-shirts emblazoned with Watkins' face.
Players passed around a small Watkins bobblehead, complete with her trademark "JuJu Bun" hairstyle, on the sidelines during the game.
A day earlier, coach Lindsay Gottlieb said her team was playing for its inured star: "I think the prevailing feeling is that we can still do something together, and that's what JuJu wants us to do."
Watkins was hoping to lead USC to its first national title since it won back to back in 2002 and '03.

Auburn's claim of 7 football titles is a throwback to a flawed system. Don't blame the Tigers
Not so long ago, in a land not so far away, what sounds like a fairy tale was reality. An SEC team won every game it played. It beat four top 15 teams. Only two wins came by single digits. The BCS computers said, 'Thanks, but no thanks,' and tapped undefeated USC and Oklahoma teams to play for the national title. Advertisement That was 2004. Two decades later, Auburn is — why now? who knows! — rewriting history. Tuesday, it announced plans to recognize that 2004 team as a national champion, one of seven new titles the program will now commemorate. With one decision, it also added national championships 1910, 1913, 1914, 1958, 1983 and 1993, taking it from two to nine all time. It might be absurd. But I say let Auburn cook. College football has never made sense. It's never been fair that a team can win every game on its schedule and not get to compete for a national title on the field. It's infuriating. It's unlike other sports. It'll likely never happen again after the College Football Playoff expanded from four teams to 12, a new world from the two-team BCS National Championship Game that locked out Auburn 21 years ago. Auburn's decision Tuesday harkens back to a bygone era of the sport, where national championships could routinely be claimed and disputed. Ironically, in 2017, Auburn failed to end UCF's undefeated season in the Peach Bowl, which gave the Knights the impetus to controversially hang '2017 National Champions' signage in the Bounce House after the season. Auburn, welcome to the club. 'For too long, Auburn has chosen a humble approach to our program's storied history — choosing to only recognize Associated Press National Championships,' athletic director John Cohen said. 'Starting this fall, we have made the decision to honor the accomplishments of our deserving student-athletes, coaches, and teams from Auburn's proud history.' The 2004 team, led by future first-round picks Jason Campbell, Ronnie Brown and Cadillac Williams, could make a case. Not all of the seven new titles are as legitimate. In 1993, Terry Bowden led the Tigers to an undefeated season, but the program was under NCAA sanctions and unrecognized by the coaches' poll and bowl games. It ranked fourth in the AP Top 25. Advertisement I'll begrudgingly allow it. The 1910 Auburn team, which went 6-1, was named champion by the Maxwell Ratings and College Football Rankings. It's important to note that neither of these rankings existed at the time. They're run by Loren Maxwell and Kyle Matschke. They are not grizzled pre-World War I college football sickos who died decades ago. They're men living in 2025 who built ratings systems and crowned retroactive champions. Now, a school is recognizing them. The same is true of the Howell Ratings System, which gave Auburn the 1914 title. Auburn lost a game in 1910. Champion Pitt did not. It tied a game in 1914. Champion Army was unbeaten and untied. But a sport with no one in charge has no mechanisms to prevent teams from claiming titles out of thin air. And while the legitimacy of Auburn's titles is questionable, it's not like those teams went head to head. There's at least some debate, even if it's being spawned by ratings models decades later. It's all silly, but credit to Auburn for recognizing it and giving their program more things to celebrate and honor from the past. Don't hate the player. Hate the game. Alabama fans — so long as no one takes a closer look at the dubious claims behind many of their 18 titles — will laugh. So will fans of other rivals like Georgia. Anyone associated with Auburn should ignore the complaints and derision and join the parade. Hundreds of players from the proudest teams in Auburn history are more revered than they were yesterday. Ultimately, that's what this is about. That and making Jordan-Hare Stadium feel a little cooler and more historic. Come and take the signage down. Try it. They'll just put it back up again. Spurs' Carter Bryant honors family member with jersey number selection
Rookie Carter Bryant will begin his career in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs with a new jersey number after wearing No. 9 as a freshman last season at Arizona. Bryant wore it in various events before joining the Wildcats, such as the McDonald's All-American Game and the Pangos All-American Camp. He was forced to change it upon joining the Spurs, with it retired to honor Hall of Famer Tony Parker. The 14th pick also wore a few other numbers, though each one was taken on the team. He opted to go with No. 11, which is the same number his uncle wore. "I wanted nine," Bryant said. "Obviously, Tony Parker has nine retired. (De'Aaron) Fox has four. Steph Castle has five. Dylan (Harper) got two. I was a Kawhi fan, so I was trying to get the two. Vic (Wembanyama) got one, so then I went through all of the numbers I liked and which ones looked good. My uncle ended up wearing No. 11 playing pro volleyball overseas, so I went with 11." Bryant helped the Wildcats to the Sweet 16, averaging 6.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and one assist on 37.1% shooting from 3-point range. He scored in double figures five times, including a season-high-tying 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and two blocks on Jan. 27. The 19-year-old logged six appearances with the Spurs in summer league, averaging 7.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.2 assists on 28.6% shooting from the field. He wrapped up his stay with a 16-point, five-rebound performance on July 17. Bryant has ingratiated himself well within the local community after volunteering at a couple of events this offseason. The team was excited to add him and is eager to watch him hit the court.
