When you buy a home, your principal and interest payments aren't the only financial burdens you'll have to worry about. Thousands in so-called "hidden costs" also come due every year.
According to a report from Bankrate this week, the average homeowner in the US spends around $21,400 a year on things like maintenance costs ($8,808), utilities and energy ($4,494), property taxes ($4,316), home insurance ($2,267), and internet and cable ($1,515).
"Hidden costs" have risen in recent years, the report said, as home values and inflation have surged.
"Higher home values mean bigger property taxes and homeowners insurance policies (and premiums). And in the last five years, inflation has also been rearing its ugly head in the rising cost of everything, including construction/home improvement materials, goods and services — and labor," wrote Linda Bell, a senior writer on Bankrate's Home Lending team, in the report.
Bell continued: "In Bankrate's 2025 Homeowner Regrets Survey, nearly half of homeowners (42 percent) who had at least one misgiving about buying their home cited maintenance and other hidden costs as being more expensive than expected."
These costs vary from state to state. In the report, Bankrate compiled the five most expensive states and the five least expensive states in the US. All 10 of those cities are listed below in order of their national ranking. Their total annual "hidden costs" are included, as well as commentary from Bell about particular costs for each state.

About 78 percent of Americans say they're uncomfortable investing in Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies. Here's why
Despite all the hype around cryptocurrency, the vast majority of Americans say they're uncomfortable investing in it, according to Bankrate's 2025 Long-Term Investment Survey. Nearly 4 in 5 Americans (78 percent) say they're not comfortable putting their investment dollars in crypto. So, what might be making Americans uncomfortable with cryptocurrency? And what are some other investments that have proven track records of attractive, long-term returns? Let's take a look. Bankrate's Long-Term Investment Survey indicated clearly that Americans largely feel uncomfortable investing in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, and only a relatively small proportion were comfortable with them. Here's how the survey's results break down: Very comfortable — 5 percent Somewhat comfortable — 15 percent Not too comfortable — 28 percent Not at all comfortable — 49 percent Had not heard of it — 2 percent The 2025 results were similar to those of the same survey in 2022, when Bankrate last conducted it. In 2022, 21 percent of Americans were 'very' or 'somewhat' comfortable, compared to 75 percent who were either 'not too comfortable' or 'not at all comfortable.' Younger generations tend to be more comfortable with cryptocurrency. In the 2025 survey, about 28 percent of Gen Z said they were 'very comfortable' or 'somewhat comfortable' with it, compared to 30 percent of millennials, 21 percent of Gen X and 6 percent of boomers. While the Bankrate survey didn't ask respondents to say specifically why they were uncomfortable with investing in cryptocurrency, it did offer at least one clue. That is, the survey asked Americans why they didn't pick stocks as their top investment, and the top reason was their notable volatility. Volatility — the stomach-churning up and down of an investment — makes investing difficult for many traders. While stocks are well-known for their volatility, cryptocurrency has it in spades. 'Lacking traditional fundamentals such as cash flow, the movement in cryptocurrency prices are largely sentiment-driven,' says Greg McBride, CFA, Bankrate chief financial analyst. 'As sentiment shifts wildly, so, too, do crypto prices.' For example, during its lifetime of around 16 years, Bitcoin has lost 60 percent of its value or more in three different calendar years. This level of volatility scares investors, forcing them out of investments — after they've lost money — as the price of crypto yo-yos. It's also important to understand that cryptocurrency (in most cases) is not backed by the assets or cash flow of an underlying business, unlike traditional investments. The price of most cryptocurrencies is based solely on the sentiment of traders and whether they expect a crypto coin to rise or fall in value. If demand for a coin disappears, the coin can become literally worthless. So the only thing that keeps the price of a crypto rising is by drawing more money to it — that is, by hyping it and trying to generate more excitement. For example, many crypto analysts simply issue larger and larger price targets for popular coins such as Bitcoin, helping to keep up excitement that the crypto can rise in the future and drawing more investment dollars to it today. In this light, it's quite reasonable that Americans are uncomfortable investing in cryptocurrency. Many Americans — perhaps especially the young, who are most comfortable with crypto — may lack the knowledge and expertise to see the danger of investing in an asset based on nothing and without adequate regulation that requires minimum standards for raising money for one. While cryptocurrency has been around for a number of years, many people still don't know what it is or why some of the most popular cryptocurrencies seem to go up (and down). Whereas Bitcoin has seen its price go up many, many times, thousands of other cryptocurrencies have gone nowhere or have been outright frauds and blown up entirely, costing investors billions. The crypto market is effectively unregulated, meaning anyone can create a cryptocurrency and investors have few protections. Again, literally anyone can create a cryptocurrency and raise money, and more than 20,000 cryptocurrencies are traded on exchanges, according to many estimates, though some estimates put the number of existing cryptocurrencies in the millions. Cryptocurrency has also infamously been used by many criminals, allowing them to more easily commit crimes such as extortion and money laundering. The semi-anonymity of cryptocurrency and the finality of it — once you've sent the cryptocurrency, it's gone forever — make it easy for criminals to use crypto to transact their business. Americans have a number of proven alternative investments that have a strong record of returns, and, importantly, they are backed by assets, unlike most cryptocurrencies. In fact, in Bankrate's 2025 Long-Term Investment Survey, Americans picked the stock market as their top long-term investment for money that they don't need for a decade or more. 'With crypto, any return on investment is solely dependent on the price increasing from what you paid for it,' says McBride. 'But stocks represent ownership in real businesses and cash flow can be reinvested in the company, used to make acquisitions, or returned to shareholders through dividends and stock buybacks.' Stocks are fractional ownership of a company, and the stock's performance is driven over time by the performance of that business. Anyone can own a piece of successful companies such as Amazon (AMZN), Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) and Apple (AAPL) — and your long-term returns reflect their business success. Plus, if you need to generate income, you can invest in dividend stocks and enjoy the cash flow. 'Studies have shown that over long investment horizons, dividends comprised approximately 40 percent of an investor's total return,' says McBride. 'Not only does this allow you to make money in a flat market, but reinvesting those dividends is a further compounder of wealth.' Real estate is another popular investment, and it's regularly among Americans' most preferred investments, coming in second in Bankrate's survey. Real estate, whether it's a primary residence or an investment property, has delivered attractive returns over time, particularly to those who can hold on for decades and avoid the substantial transaction costs and taxes. Real estate can be a great way to generate income, too, offering you cash each month. An investment in real estate is backed by the property, unlike an investment in cryptocurrency. Bonds are a relatively safe type of asset that is also backed by the assets and cash flow of a business or government, unlike cryptocurrency. With bonds, you make an investment, earn interest during the life of the bond and then receive the bond's face value when it matures. Bonds are an attractive place if you need to generate income, for example, for retirees. While bonds aren't much known for appreciating in value, they're a proven long-term investment. Investment funds — whether they're mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs) — offer attractive long-term returns. These funds own stakes in stocks and bonds, and the funds' total return reflects the performance of their investments. Some of the best ETFs buy high-growth stocks and let them compound your wealth for years, and all you need to do is hold on. 'Individual investors have been well-served by regular contributions to broad-based, low-cost index funds that are held over many years with all distributions reinvested,' says McBride. Investment funds also own dozens, sometimes hundreds, of investments, reducing the risk of a single investment as well as lowering the volatility of the fund. These funds are backed by their investments, which are supported by the assets and cash flow of real underlying companies. 'Use this as your blueprint,' says McBride. 'You get instant diversification from the first dollar you invest, rock-bottom investment expenses, low or no minimum investment, and regular automatic contributions and reinvestment of all distributions enable you to build your position effortlessly over time.' Most Americans remain uncomfortable investing in cryptocurrency, and the risks of investing in it remain outrageously high, including the fact that it's not backed by anything at all. I paused investing to pay off student loans — and still retired at 40
Yes, I stopped contributing to my 401(k) and paused all other types of investing to pay off my student loans. And no, I don't regret it. Going against the grain not only helped me become debt-free, but after I paid off my loans, I was able to invest enough to retire at the age of 40. The general wisdom from personal finance experts is that you should never stop investing. But that advice doesn't take into account that 42.7 million Americans grappled with federal student loan debt last year, with an average balance of $38,000. It also doesn't consider the mental toll that student loans take on borrowers. Bankrate insights on the weight of debt 43% of U.S. adults reported that money negatively impacts their mental health, at least occasionally, causing feelings of anxiety, stress, worrisome thoughts, loss of sleep, depression and other effects, according to Bankrate's Money and Mental Health Survey. In 2023, Bankrate's Financial Milestone Survey found that 59% of U.S. adults who have held student loan debt delayed financial milestones due to their student debt. 21% of Americans cited paying down debt as their main financial goal for 2025, according to Bankrate's Financial Outlook Survey. Freeing yourself from the weight of debt before focusing on other financial priorities can relieve some of that burden. Financial advisors will insist that you're missing out on the wonders of compounding interest on a retirement account, but don't forget that your student loan interest is compounding, too. Depending on your loan balance and interest rate, you may even come out ahead by throwing money at debt payments instead of your investing goals. By pausing all investing while I focused on student loans, I also shifted my perspective on money: Debt is a short-term issue, and investing is a lifelong skill. If you've been feeling overwhelmed by trying to juggle paying off debt and saving for retirement, here are three reasons to prioritize eliminating your student loan debt first. Bankrate's take: Before deciding to pause your retirement savings, be sure to check with a financial advisor or tax professional to understand the best option for your financial situation. Your unique tax liability, employer match benefit and student debt details may impact your decision. When I decided to pause my retirement contributions, I expected to feel guilt or fear. And truthfully, I did briefly. But then I ran the numbers and gained clarity. Use a student loan calculator to understand the true costs of your student loan debt, both monthly and in the long run. For example, let's say you have an average amount of student loan debt ($38,000) and the lowest federal student loan rate of 6.53 percent. Over the life of your student loan, you'd pay nearly $14,000 in interest alone. Repayment term 10 years Number of payments 120 Monthly payments $432.06 Total interest paid $13,847.51 For me, the thought of paying thousands of dollars in interest toward a debt that already felt draining wasn't appealing. Prioritizing debt payoff was something I could control. Plus, watching my balance drop and my payoff debt move closer by years, not just months, kept me motivated. Running the numbers on the interest helped me feel like I wasn't being pulled in five financial directions at once — I decided to laser-focus on one goal: freedom from student loan debt. Shifting to one priority for a finite period felt more achievable than trying to tackle multiple financial goals simultaneously. Let's be honest: There were months when just paying my bills felt like a stretch. Many of my coaching clients report similar struggles in making ends meet. Bankrate's Living Paycheck to Paycheck Survey found that 34 percent of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, which means they have little to no money left over for savings after covering essential expenses. To make matters worse, 59 percent of U.S. adults are uncomfortable with the amount of money they have in emergency savings, and 13 percent have no emergency savings at all, according to Bankrate's Emergency Savings Report. With student loan payments consuming hundreds of dollars each month, pausing retirement contributions helped me make ends meet after graduation. It doesn't make sense to stash away money in a 401(k) that you can't touch for decades if you're building credit card debt to cover everyday expenses. Temporarily pausing my 401(k) contributions while I paid down my student loans gave me the breathing room I needed to cover my living expenses, build a starter emergency fund and avoid falling deeper into credit card debt. Successful financial planning isn't just about the long-term view — it's about paying for the right now too. Once I was out of debt (and stayed out of debt), I redirected the money I'd been putting toward student loan payments and shifted it back to retirement investing. I was shocked to discover how much more I could contribute to my monthly savings, more than when I was simply matching my employer's contribution. I've been able to max out my 401(k) and individual retirement accounts every year since I became debt-free. For 2025, that's $23,500 for my 401(k) and $7,000 for my IRA. This renewed focus has accelerated my retirement savings growth beyond what it would've been if I'd tried to pay off my student loans and save for retirement simultaneously. This pause gave me room to think beyond dollar amounts and dive into why I wanted to invest in the first place. A financial advisor might argue that you may earn more interest on investments than you'd save by paying down debt, but neglects to remind you that paying down your debt is a guaranteed return. You'll undoubtedly save the money that would have gone toward interest, and once you're done, you're done. The market for investments is more fickle — some years it's up, and others it's down. A sizable return on your investment isn't guaranteed. When I speak to clients with hefty student loan balances, they tend to be more skittish about stock market volatility. The burden of their debt leaves them feeling that they can't afford to 'lose money' the same way I can, both financially and emotionally. That clarity stayed with me after I resumed investing. Without student loans looming over me, I can research investments with confidence, knowing I have the flexibility to weather the market's volatility. Instead of blindly selecting a target-date fund or following my employer's recommended option, I took the time to educate myself. I learned about different types of accounts and asset classes, and even became an angel investor. Paying off debt didn't just free up my bank account — it freed up my brain to invest like an owner, not just a participant. Related: Should you pay off student loans or invest? For most student loan borrowers, higher education was an investment decision. We borrowed that money with the expectation of earning a greater return than what we invested, just as we would with any other investment. No one discusses what we gained in the process of completing what we started when we took out those loans in the first place. While I focused on student loans, I developed several other money habits that I'll carry with me for the rest of my life: using debt as a last resort instead of a first option, budgeting with intention and saying no to lifestyle creep. My husband and I learned how to budget together. The friends I shared my financial goals with rooted for me and understood when I turned down expensive gatherings. I even gained the confidence to share my story broadly, eventually turning my debt payoff journey into a financial education company that now serves thousands, with a focus on helping my clients become debt-free and head towards quality and timely retirement. HELOC rates are falling again. Here are 3 things homeowners should consider now.

Getty Images The ups and downs in the home equity line of credit (HELOC) interest rate climate continue unabated, new data released this week shows. The average HELOC interest rate declined by five basis points to 8.22%, according to new Bankrate data. That comes after rates here spiked from 8.14% to 8.27% earlier in June, but it follows an overall steady decline for much of 2024 and 2025. At one point earlier this spring, HELOC interest rates were steadily below 8% – more than two full percentage points lower than they were in September 2024. But that downward trend has been slowed recently, with predictions on where HELOC rates could be headed later this year varying. For homeowners looking to borrow equity, these changes lead to a series of questions and considerations. With the average home equity amount high now, and growing in parts of the country, home equity borrowing could be the optimal way to access a large, six-figure sum of money right now. But should it be done with a HELOC, especially considering the fluctuations in rates lately? Below, we'll break down three things homeowners should consider now that can help better inform the answer. Start by seeing how low of a HELOC rate you could qualify for here. 3 things homeowners should consider with HELOC rates falling again Don't jump into the HELOC borrowing market before first considering these three factors now: The volatility in the interest rate climate The Federal Reserve issued three rate cuts toward the end of 2024, paused them for the first half of 2025 and is now poised to resume that rate cut campaign later this summer. This could cause some volatility in the interest rate climate and it will inevitably impact HELOC rates. Rates here have been rising and falling routinely in recent weeks, making budgeting difficult both for prospective borrowers and existing ones, thanks to the variable rate the product comes with. Since rates here can change monthly, your payments can, too, perhaps to a significant degree. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't automatically avoid the use of a HELOC (it remains one of the cheapest ways to borrow equity now), but it does mean that some volatility will need to be priced into your budget to avoid any costly surprises. The benefits of a fixed-rate home equity loan The average home equity loan interest rate is 8.25%, just three basis points higher than a HELOC is right now. And, unlike a HELOC, that rate is fixed, offering savers peace of mind in today's unpredictable rate climate. This benefit is a critical one for homeowners, as the home functions as collateral in these exchanges and, accordingly, it could be lost back to the bank if payments can't be made as agreed to. The chances of this happening with a fixed-rate home equity loan, however, in which repayments can be calculated with precision, are generally lower than they'd be with a variable-rate HELOC. That noted, homeowners also won't be able to exploit future rate decreases as easily, as the home equity loan will need to be refinanced, while the HELOC rate will adjust independently. Still, the fixed-rate home equity loan could be worth it if you need the funds now and want to be able to budget the repayments of those funds accurately. Other home equity borrowing alternatives HELOCs and home equity loans may be two of the more well-known ways to borrow home equity but they're not your only options. Cash-out refinancing could be beneficial for those homeowners currently saddled with above-average mortgage rates. In this instance, homeowners take out a new mortgage loan to pay off their existing one and keep the difference between the two as cash. While not beneficial for homeowners with low rates, this could make sense for those who have rates over 7% now and for those who have seen their home value surge in recent years. Reverse mortgages, meanwhile, for homeowners over age 62, may also be worth it as they won't come with many of the repayment concerns (and cost calculations) that home equity loans and HELOCs do right now. There is no uniform way to borrow home equity, so it makes sense to explore all of your options before getting started. The bottom line A decline in HELOC rates this week may be welcome, but that drop could be short-lived if recent activity is any reliable indicator of future rate movements. Homeowners, then, should take a step back to evaluate the volatility in the broader interest rate climate. By doing so, considering the benefits of a fixed-rate home equity loan instead and by comparing all home equity borrowing options side by side, they can make a more well-rounded, financially sound decision that can benefit them both now and into the future.
