'I'm a travel agent and these five destinations are completely overrated'
Picking the perfect destination for your holiday is no easy task. But now, a professional travel agent may just help you narrow down your options.
Carlos Lavilla, who assists in curating tailor-made trips at Turama, recently took to TikTok to share his insights. After travelling for more than three decades, he warned that some destinations are severely overrated.
"These are the five tourist destinations that, as a professional travel agent, I consider to be the most overrated," he told Turama's followers. "And not just as a professional travel agent, but also as an inveterate traveller for more than 30 years, these are the tourist destinations that I don't usually recommend to my customers."
No. 5: Cape Verde
Counting back from fifth place, Carlos revealed that Cape Verde was among the most overhyped destinations he'd ever been to. The archipelago, situated in the Atlantic Ocean just west of Africa, has long attracted tourists from far and wide.
In fact, official statistics suggest that a record-breaking 1.2 million tourists were welcomed into the nation last year alone. However, perhaps contentiously, Carlos has been disappointed with his experience.
On TikTok, he said: "In my opinion, travelling to Cape Verde as an alternative to the Canary Islands is like buying a Fiat Panda thinking you're getting a Ferrari F40. No matter how you try to dress it up, there's simply no comparison."
No. 4: Johannesburg, South Africa
Johannesburg's position as the fourth city on the agent's list might raise a few eyebrows. As one of South Africa's largest cities, it boasts an array of significant landmarks such as Constitution Hill and the Apartheid Museum, not to mention the chance for visitors to embark on nearby wildlife safaris.
However, Carlos cited its high crime rate as a reason he wasn't so keen on the destination. According to Statista data, between 2022 and 2023, Johannesburg Central experienced more contact crime incidents than any other city. These mainly included common assaults.
"In addition, you'll be able to say you were robbed in one of the ugliest cities on Earth," Carlos added.
No. 3: Hawaiian Islands
For many, Hawaii's vibrant blue waters and beautiful beaches represent the ideal holiday destination. Unfortunately, Carlos doesn't agree.
Instead, he claimed there are far 'more interesting' alternatives that are worth more of your time. He went on: "With a couple of honourable exceptions (which do exist), Hawaii is the ideal destination for an American retiree over 70 who has a collection of shirts at home that he doesn't dare to wear anywhere else.
"If that's not your case, I assure you there are much more interesting and far less predictable alternatives."
No. 2: South Korea
Next on the hit list was South Korea and Carlos certainly didn't hold back. The travel agent not only alleged that tourists aren't treated too warmly here but also said he just finds the entire nation 'bland'.
"South Korea is excessively expensive for what it offers," he said. "The treatment of foreign tourists leaves much to be desired. I find it bland, insipid, and rather sad. You may return home shrouded in a great depression."
Despite his views, tourism in South Korea is only increasing. The nation's capital, Seoul, and other major cities like Busan, are among the various hotspots that welcome countless visitors every year.
No. 1: Doha, Qatar
Last but not least, Carlos drew attention to Doha. Qatar's capital is often deemed a vibrant source of culture, hosting numerous museums, malls and even a chance to hop on desert safaris.
Yet, Carlos disagrees. In fact, he compared tourism here to visiting a 'petrol station in the middle of a motorway'. He explained: "For my taste, Doha in tourism terms is like a petrol station in the middle of a motorway: a place where you stop briefly to relieve yourself, grab a quick bite, rest for a few minutes, and then carry on. There's nothing more to it."
Unsurprisingly, the travel agent's views stirred up quite the debate on TikTok. While some users agreed with his views, others slammed them as completely untrue.
One person wrote: "I've travelled to more than 40 countries, and South Korea is one of the best places to relax and see very different things, and they treat you wonderfully! And Cape Verde is very diverse, with several islands, all different, very Europeanised, having been a Portuguese colony. It's highly recommended, not to put it in the top 5 most overrated..."
Another person added: "Have you been to Cape Verde? There are 10 islands... and they are all different." Meanwhile, someone else said: "I would add Cuba. Depressing."

L'Oreal's £32 hydrating serum Zara McDermott uses for her in-flight skincare is now £16
Zara McDermott has previously shared that she uses the L'Oreal Paris hyaluronic acid serum during her in-flight skincare routine to beat dryness, and it's now got 50% off Summer is of course the time when plenty of us are jetting off on holiday and making the most of the sunny weather abroad. Whilst we might have prepped our holiday skincare routine, there's one part of your trip that can leave your skin worse for wear before you've even arrived. Flights are notorious for causing your skin to become dehydrated, tight and puffy, which is why Zara McDermott has devised the perfect in-flight skincare routine to make sure you arrive at your destination glowing. One key part of her routine is the L'Oréal Paris 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Revitalift Filler Serum, which Zara featured in her TikTok video last year. In the video, Zara said: 'I hate that dry skin feeling you get when stepping off a plane, so I always make sure I look after my skin while on the flight.' After applying a hydrating sheet mask, Zara then puts several drops of the L'Oréal Paris 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Revitalift Filler Serum onto her skin. The serum is now 50% off in LookFantastic's summer sale, slashed from its usual price of £31.99 to £16 for a travel-friendly sized 30ml bottle. She adds: 'I'm not joking when I say I take this mini hyaluronic acid with me absolutely everywhere.' She then explains why the 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Revitalift Filler Serum is her serum of choice, with its three types of hyaluronic acid being the biggest draw. One of the types is micro epidermic hyaluronic acid, which penetrates even deeper into your skin's layers for added hydration. Its 1.5% concentration of hyaluronic acid is also the strongest in the L'Oreal family, adding extra nourishment and moisture back into your complexion – a must if you're spending hours under the plane air con. It also helps skin to appear plumper, smoother and more toned, ready for a few days of sunshine. Another great choice for multi-weight hyaluronic acids is Medik8's Hydr8 B5 Intense, which currently has 20% off. Usually priced at £59, it's now £47.20 and contains a combination of vitamin B5 and several different weights of hyaluronic acid. For a slightly more affordable pick, La Roche Posay's Hyalu B5 Serum Anti-Wrinkle Concentrate Serum With Hyaluronic Acid has a similar ingredient combination which helps fight wrinkles whilst hydrating, as is on sale for £31.50 down from £45. You could also nab BYOMA's Hydrating Serum, which is a bargain at £13 and contains a mixture of hydrating ingredients which minimise your skin's water loss, hydrates your skin and boosts your skin barrier. However considering how enviable Zara's skin always looks, it's safe to say that we'll be taking a leaf out of her in-flight skincare routine – especially now the L'Oréal Paris 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Revitalift Filler Serum is 50% off! Ryanair traveller 'can't believe' £16.99 flight doesn't have basic thing
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video It's a horror story in two words: No Wi-Fi. But this was reality for one man who had no internet connection on his Ryanair flight to Benidorm that he paid just £16.99 for. Graham White, 48, boarded a flight from Newcastle to Alicante, a city about 30 miles west of the holiday hotspot, on July 25 with his friend. His mate assumed that the plane would have on-board Wi-Fi, only to realise he'd have to rawdog the flight and, we assume, be filled with existential dread. In an exchange captured on TikTok, Graham asked the flight attendants why the internet wasn't working thousands of miles up in the air. One replied: 'We don't do Wi-Fi.' Not giving up that easily, Graham half-joked: 'Would the pilot let me use his hotspot?' Another cabin crew member clarified they 'don't have it at all', something that Graham's friend 'couldn't believe', he said. Sitting behind him, his friend remarked: 'You're lucky you have a seatbelt; you're on Ryanair.' And at least one user agreed, writing: 'No Wi-Fi, but their card machines work to sell you things.' On whether there's Wi-Fi on their planes, Ryanair's website states, rather simply: 'No.' While Graham would be fine without internet on a short-haul flight, medical experts warn against trying to rawdog long-haul trips. Rawdogging – surviving a task without a cushion – on a trip tends to include reading a book rather than watching Netflix. Travel rawdoggers have previously told Metro how trips are a great excuse to do a digital detox. But others online have taken it to mean going without food, water or moving, just staring into the abyss of the in-flight map for eight hours. This version of rawdogging is too, well, raw, for experts like Tobba Vigfusdóttir, psychologist and CEO of Kara Connect. She said: 'Some people may find it more relaxing to engage in familiar activities like reading or watching a movie, which can also provide a sense of comfort and escapism.'
