Hospitals see rush as monsoon gives rise to viral fever cases
2
Bhubaneswar: Hospitals and clinics are witnessing an increased number of patients suffering from viral fever with doctors attributing the cases to the influenza viruses prevalent in the
monsoon
.
People suffering from viral fever experience fever, headache, running nose, cough and body ache.
"Initially, I got a headache and then fever. My body pain started on the second day. Later, I got loose motion too. Doctors diagnosed it as viral fever. Many of my friends are also sick," said Animesh Mishra of Patia.
Dr Dhananjaya Das, superintendent-in-charge, Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar, said they have seen a 10% rise in viral fever cases during the last few days in their hospital.
"If the fever does not subside within 2 to 3 days, people should test themselves for dengue, typhoid, and malaria or other water-borne diseases," he added.
Dr Jayanta Panda, professor of medicine, SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, said multiple viruses exist in the atmosphere and people come in contact with these pathogens, including influenza viruses. "During the rainy season and cold climate, viruses get a favourable condition to grow.
People with low immunity are prone to viral infections in the rainy season," he added.
Panda said people prone to infections can take preventive steps like properly washing hands, using masks while going out, avoiding soaking in the rain for a long time, and avoiding unhygienic food and water. "As soon as infections occur, they should consult a doctor," he added.
Dr P N Sahoo, a medicine specialist, said he gets 10 to 15 viral fever patients daily during this rainy season.
"People get an allergic cough after a viral infection. It lasts for several days after the fever is gone. People with underlying conditions like diabetes and chronic kidney diseases face difficulties due to viral infections, but normal people recover in seven days with medication," he added.
Doctors cautioned people not to take antibiotics without consulting a doctor. They said antibiotics do not help in viral fever. "People should not purchase over-the-counter antibiotics without consulting a doctor. If a doctor prescribes antibiotics, the patients should complete the course as directed by the physician. The consumption of antibiotics should not be left midway," said Dr Das.

Paddy dwarfing virus detected in Punjab.
Ludhiana: While the Punjab government has pushed for advanced transplantation of paddy this year, it appears to have led to surfacing of paddy dwarfing disease in transplanted crop earlier, as per field observations by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). Paddy dwarfing disease, caused by Southern Rice Black Streaked Dwarf Virus (SRBSDV), has surfaced in Punjab, with confirmed cases in multiple districts and growing concern among farmers. Surveys by PAU across 20 districts in July and August this year have found the disease in sub-mountainous areas, including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Ropar, Fatehgarh Sahib and Patiala. Field observations showed that transplanting before June 20 increased infection risk. Fields transplanted after June 25 largely escaped early infection, showing little to no symptoms during the survey. The government this year had advanced the paddy transplanting date from usual mid June to June 1. The disease is marked by stunting, reduced tillering, poor root growth, narrow upright leaves and shortened internodes. It spreads through the WBPH, an insect vector favoured by specific weather conditions. Experts say this year's outbreak mirrors the climate pattern of 2022, when the last major flare-up occurred. To contain the spread, PAU has issued insect-vector management guidelines. Farmers are advised to monitor WBPH populations closely and use only the recommended insecticides. Astrocartography: The New Age Tool That Claims to Predict Your Success Based on Where You Live
I stand before a world map bathed in starlight, arms outstretched to embrace the luminous web of astrological influences connecting us to the cosmos. While natal astrology helps us understand our individual selves, astrocartography offers a unique way to apply that understanding to the physical world. Astrocartography, also known as locational astrology, is a technique that maps the planetary lines of a person's birth chart onto a world map. It reveals how different geographical locations on Earth may affect an individual's life, showing where a person might experience more love, success, adventure, or challenges. The core principle behind astrocartography is that the planetary energies in your birth chart are not static; they are projected onto the Earth's surface in specific lines. When you are in a location where one of these lines is active, you are essentially "turning up the volume" on that planet's influence in your life. For example, if you were to travel to a city where your Venus line is located, you might find that you experience more romantic opportunities, feel more creative, or find yourself focused on beauty and art. Conversely, a location on your Mars line might bring more energy, drive, and ambition, but could also be associated with conflict, competition, or intense activity. The beauty of astrocartography is that it provides a practical guide for travel and relocation. It helps answer questions like: "Where should I go on vacation to relax and find inspiration?" or "What city would be most conducive to my career goals?" It's a powerful tool for self-discovery, helping you understand why you might feel more at home, more successful, or more challenged in certain places. For example, someone might feel a strong pull to move to a certain city without knowing why. An astrocartography map could reveal that their Jupiter line—the planet of expansion and good fortune—runs directly through that location, explaining the intuitive attraction. It's important to remember that astrocartography is not a deterministic tool. It doesn't force a specific outcome but rather highlights a potential. It suggests that while you carry your entire birth chart with you wherever you go, certain planetary energies become more prominent depending on your location. It's a way of merging the celestial with the terrestrial, providing a fascinating and practical lens through which to view your life's journey and choose your path forward. Ulterior financial motives driving opposition to SC order on stray dogs, allege city advocates
Nagpur: The opposition to the Supreme Court's recent order directing the removal of stray dogs from Delhi-NCR streets and their relocation to shelters may be driven by vested financial interests, alleged some members of Nagpur's legal fraternity. They say certain non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and commercial stakeholders linked to dog sterilisation and vaccine supply may have much to lose if the SC ruling is implemented in full. Senior advocate Firdos Mirza said he had raised the issue while pleading another case at Nagpur Bench of Bombay high court. "I said it in the court that there seems to be some vested interest of NGOs for putting stray dogs before the safety of human beings. Any species, as a natural instinct, prioritises protecting its own. So, humans will always rush to first save a human if he or she is in danger. If this natural instinct is not being adhered to, it means there must be some big incentive to do so," Mirza said. Mirza pointed out that under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme, approximately Rs850 is given as funds per dog for sterilisation. "I heard about a civic official who was suspended after allegations that he had his own NGO which was implementing the ABC programme. With approximately 1.5 lakh street dogs in Nagpur, you can calculate the financial incentive when multiplied by Rs850 per canine," he said. Advocate Wilson Matthew added that the scale of the rabies vaccine market also raises questions about ulterior financial motives. "Around 3,000 dog-bite cases are recorded in Nagpur every year. Each vial of anti-rabies vaccine costs around Rs350, with a complete course requiring five doses. Govt hospitals often report shortages, while private facilities seem to have adequate stock. Nationwide, lakhs of dog-bite cases and 18,000-20,000 rabies deaths are reported annually, sustaining India's Rs5,000 crore vaccine industry. Given this scale, some believe opposition to controlling stray dog numbers could indirectly serve the commercial interests of vaccine manufacturers," he said.
