Sikkim University student held over ‘insult' to Nepali language
Police detained the student, Raj Shekar Yadav, from the university premises for questioning after some local students lodged a complaint at Rani Pool police station. Yadav, a resident of Varanasi, was later arrested.
The first-semester Master of Commerce student is accused of posting a message on WhatsApp on August 15, claiming that Nepali is a foreign language and those who speak it 'should go to Nepal.'
University authorities have not yet issued a response to the matter, according to PTI.
The Sikkim University Students' Association, through its president Anup Regmi, reported the incident to both the university administration and the police. The body also released a statement condemning Yadav's words as 'divisive and harmful to peace and harmony within the university.' It further stressed that Nepali is not only widely spoken in Sikkim but also recognised under the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
Yadav later issued a video apology, asking for forgiveness for his remark.
Darjeeling magistrate faces backlash over Nepali language remark
In a separate incident, a remark attributed to a judicial magistrate in Darjeeling regarding the Nepali language drew sharp criticism from all Hill parties on Tuesday, with some even calling for her transfer, The Times of India reported.
Alakananda Sarkar, serving at Mungpoo court as judicial magistrate first class and civil judge (junior division), was quoted by the local Bar as saying in open court on Monday that 'Nepali is a language of Nepal, not of India.'
Lawyers from the Darjeeling, Mungpoo and Kurseong Bar associations boycotted proceedings at Darjeeling District Court in protest.
Taranga Pandit, president of the Darjeeling Bar Association, told TOI the magistrate's remarks showed a lack of awareness about Nepali's constitutional status.
'Nepali is recognised in the Eighth Schedule and is an official language of the three Hills subdivisions under Official Language Act, 1961. Her remarks are disastrous not only for communal harmony but also deeply insulting to Nepali-speaking communities across India," Pandit said.
Members of the Indian Gorkha Janashakti Front, led by Ajoy Edwards, put up posters across Darjeeling denouncing the episode. GTA chief Anit Thapa described the statement as 'unconstitutional and deeply hurtful to community sentiments.'
Thapa also said he had informed state labour minister Moloy Ghatak of the matter. ''The minister has written to the Chief Justice and registrar general of Calcutta HC, requesting immediate intervention,' said Thapa.' In his letter, Ghatak emphasised that Nepali is recognised in the Eighth Schedule and is the official court language in the Darjeeling Hills, urging immediate resolution 'to prevent the situation from deteriorating.' Darjeeling BJP MP Raju Bista criticised the comment as 'ignorant and dangerous.'
Earlier this month, a similar controversy over language arose after Delhi Police sent a letter to Banga Bhawan in Chanakyapuri requesting help in translating documents from 'Bangladeshi' into Hindi and English. The move sparked a political storm, with the West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee accusing it of insulting and defaming the state.
''Scandalous, insulting, anti-national, unconstitutional !! This insults all Bengali-speaking people of India. They cannot use this kind of language which degrades and debases us all. We urge immediate strongest possible protests from all against the anti-Bengali Government of India who are using such anti-Constitutional language to insult and humiliate the Bengali-speaking people of India,' Mamata Banerjee wrote on X.'

Archana, according to police, was found late Tuesday night near the India-Nepal border in Lakhimpur Khiri, Uttar Pradesh, and flown back to Bhopal early Wednesday morning. What began as a suspected accident on the Narmada Express train has now been revealed as a meticulously designed escape. According to Railway Superintendent of Police Rahul Kumar Lodha, Archana had been "under intense pressure from her family to abandon her studies and marry a Patwari". Facing mounting proposals and emotional strain, she confided in Saransh, a friend from Indore, and together they devised a plan to vanish. "Archana's legal acumen played a central role in the execution. She deliberately left her bag on the train to simulate a fall, switched coaches at Narmadapuram -- where CCTV coverage was absent -- and instructed Tejinder, another accomplice, to dispose of her mobile phone in the forests of Bagratawa near Itarsi," the officer said. "However, Tejinder was picked up by Delhi Police in a separate fraud case during the period, making it difficult for the police to advance the investigation. He is a driver by profession, while Saransh has his own drone startup. "To further obscure her trail, she used WhatsApp calls. Saransh also purchased a new phone and a SIM card registered in Saransh's father's name, while Saransh left his own phone in Indore to create a false location and digital footprint. The duo's route was calculated to avoid detection. They bypassed toll booths, purchased a new mobile mid-journey, and initially remained within Madhya Pradesh. But as media coverage intensified, they escalated their plan -- moving to Hyderabad, a lesser non-Hindi speaking area," said the officer. "Then travelling via Jodhpur and Delhi to Kathmandu, Nepal. Saransh later returned to Indore, while Archana stayed hidden until police, after detaining Saransh, persuaded her to come to the border, where she was apprehended," the officer said. The case drew widespread attention after Archana's bag -- containing Raksha Bandhan gifts -- was found abandoned at Umaria station. Her last known communication was a call to her aunt on August 7, after which her phone went silent. Police tracked her movements using mobile data and witness accounts, eventually locating her in Lakhimpur Khiri. In a parallel thread, investigators discovered Archana had been in contact with Ram Tomar, a constable posted at Gwalior's Bhanwarpura police station. He had booked a bus ticket for her from Indore to Gwalior, though she never used it. The constable was detained on August 18 and was under interrogation. Archana is now in Bhopal, where authorities are probing the motives behind her disappearance and the role of her accomplices. The case has raised serious questions about the intersection of legal literacy, personal autonomy, and the limits of law enforcement surveillance.

Govt slams Opposition for spreading lies over Maharashtra election data
New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI) Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday slammed the Opposition for disrupting Rajya Sabha proceedings, saying it was spreading lies on the Maharashtra election data, a day after research organisation CSDS issued a public apology acknowledging errors in its poll data. As the Rajya Sabha reassembled post-lunch to discuss the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill 2025, Opposition MPs staged protests demanding a discussion on alleged 'vote chori" (vote theft) in the recent Maharashtra assembly elections. Despite Vice Chairperson Bhubaneswar Kalita's repeated appeals to maintain decorum, Opposition members continued raising slogans of 'vote chori bandh karo" (stop vote theft). Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said, 'We are raising this issue every day. We want to share about 'vote chori'… This is an important issue… We have to save democracy and the Constitution." Pradhan made his opening remarks on the bill amid the sloganeering. When the Chair did not accede to their demand, Opposition members staged a walkout from the Upper House. The Union minister continued his speech and said, 'Opposition is doing harmful work as they are not letting Parliament function. Parliament functions with help of poor taxpayers' money." He accused the Opposition of wanting to discuss 'one fact posted by one person in the CSDS related to Maharashtra election with malafide intention". 'There is one person who has deliberately spread confusion in the country and the Opposition, especially Congress, is further circulating it," the Education Minister said. Allahabad HC defers plea against ordinance for control of Bankey Bihari temple
