German minister optimistic about Gaza ceasefire after call with Rubio
dpa Vienna German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul believes the chances are improving for a ceasefire in Gaza, following a phone call with his US counterpart Marco Rubio. Wadephul, speaking in Vienna on Thursday on the sidelines of talks with his Austrian and Israeli counterparts, said he was optimistic that a 'good result' could be reached. He called for the necessary pressure to now be put on Palestinian extremist organization Hamas. 'Hamas must not have a future,' the minister said. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who previously held talks with Wadephul and Austrian top diplomat Beate Meinl-Reisinger, agreed that a ceasefire was within reach. Meinl-Reisinger described the current moment as a 'historic opportunity' that was now emerging to stabilize the entire region, stressing that after 642 days of war in Gaza, an agreement was long overdue. The German and Austrian ministers again urged Israel to enable a rapid improvement in the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. The meeting in Vienna was intended as the first of a series in the same format, with Wadephul inviting his counterparts for talks in Berlin. Wadephul and Meinl-Reisinger reiterated that suspending the EU-Israel Association Agreement over human rights violations in Gaza, as is currently being discussed at EU level, was out of the question.

UK watchdog: ‘Physical threat' from Iran has increased significantly
PA Media/dpa London The threat of physical attacks by Iran on people living in the United Kingdom has increased 'significantly' since 2022, parliament's intelligence watchdog has warned. In a report published on Thursday, the intelligence and security committee described the threat from Iran as 'persistent' and 'unpredictable.' The committee found the 'physical threat' from Iran had 'significantly increased,' focused on Iranian dissidents and Jewish and Israeli interests, and was now 'comparable with the threat posed by Russia.' It also warned that the nuclear threat from Iran had increased since the US withdrew from a key international agreement in 2018, arguing that de-escalation 'must be a priority.' The report from the nine-member committee, which scrutinizes the work of Britain's intelligence agencies, only covers the period up to August 2023. Publication was delayed by last year's election. Between the beginning of 2022 and the end of the committee's evidence-gathering in August 2023, the report found there had been at least 15 attempts at murder or kidnap against British nationals or UK residents. The committee urged the government to make clear to Tehran that such attempts would 'constitute an attack on the UK and would receive the appropriate response.'
