Rutherglen Glencairn seal promotion as boss praises squad
Glens will be playing in the Premier Division next season
Joe Pryce praised goal hero Boris Melingui for the strike that sealed promotion to the West of Scotland Premier Division on Saturday – but says it was a whole-squad effort.
Melingui deflected a Scott Jarvie cross into the net in first-half stoppage time to earn a vital three points that saw them finish second, following winners Arthurlie into the top flight, with Renfrew going up in third place.
Pryce reckons striker Melingui provided a much-needed spark, but says everybody at the club has been rewarded for a long, hard season.
Glencairn ended with five successive wins, and nine from their last 11 games, and Pryce was also delighted with a clean sheet in Blantyre.
He said: 'It was a nervy game, and we knew it was always going to be.
'Boris scored right on half-time, we came in and settled everybody down, and though there weren't many scares in the second half, it was still nervy times, because one goal could change everything.
'We always had to keep it tight at the back. In the final game, to get a clean sheet away from home was just brilliant.
'If anybody thought that the three teams that were going for promotion were just going to sail through, that was never going to happen in our league.
'We were the only one of the three that actually won, with Renfrew and Kilwinning both dropping points.
'Boris came in just at the right time, as were going into the run-in, and were looking for a wee spark just to give us that extra edge. He has been absolutely brilliant.
'He fits into the team, he's a great lad, very popular with the players and the fans as well, and he has been brilliant.
'But it has been a full team, full squad performance. Everybody in the squad has contributed through the season, every single one of them.
'I thought the players were fantastic. In the last five games, where everything has been on the line, they've come up trumps in all five, and that's great credit to them.
'It's nine wins in 11 and I can't speak highly enough of them. After back-to-back defeats against Renfrew and Vale of Clyde, only five wins out of five was going to be enough for us.
'We put everything on the line in those five games, the players were absolutely fantastic, and I'm so happy and so proud of them.'
Roan Fitzpatrick was a big winner as Rutherglen Glencairn held their Player of the Year awards on Saturday, shortly after sealing promotion to the West of Scotland Premier Division.
Attacking midfielder Fitzpatrick won Committee Player of the Year, Players' Player of the Year and Supporters' Player of the Year.
Striker Ryan McManus won Management Player of the Year and Top Goalscorer, while fellow hit man Boris Melingui was Website Player of the Year and Martin McBride picked up a Special Appreciation Award.
Alex Forbes won 'Grumpiest Old Git of the Year'.

Chelsea issue telling response after Scholes makes bold Caicedo claim
Chelsea issued a telling response after Paul Scholes' comments about midfielder Moises Caicedo caused a stir on social media. After a mixed first season at Stamford Bridge, Caicedo has grown into his role at Chelsea, featuring in all 38 Premier League games and thriving in Enzo Maresca's side. The Ecuadorian international was deservedly crowned Chelsea's Player of the Year, having helped guide the club back to the Champions League as well as scoring in the final of their Conference League win over Real Betis. But not everyone was convinced with Caicedo's impact for the Blues this season, most notably former Manchester United midfielder Scholes. Speaking on the latest episode of The Overlap with SkyBet, Scholes said: 'I think a lot of people talk about Caicedo. 'He's played 38 games'. Brilliant, what an achievement. Did he control a lot of games for Chelsea? I don't remember that. 'I think there's an era now, with midfielders especially, where you can go through seasons and games without really contributing.' Many fans on social media were surprised by Scholes' comments, and it appears even Chelsea were keen to issue a rebuttal. Posting on the club's X account, the Blues posted a thread of statistics highlighting that Caicedo had made the most appearances (38) and won the most tackles (114) of any Chelsea player in the Premier League last season. — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) June 3, 2025 Only four players made more tackles than Caicedo in the league last campaign, with Marc Cucurella the next best in a Chelsea shirt with 67. Some fans on social media were less cryptic with their rebutals towards Scholes for his comments. 'This is genuinely one of the worst bits of punditry I've ever seen. And if Paul Scholes has said this he quite simply doesn't watch much football,' one user wrote on X. More Trending Another added: 'You can't watch Chelsea's games, and do even a 30-second stat check, and think Moises Caicedo that was a star for Brighton, and now Chelsea doesn't 'contribute a lot'. The eye test doesn't lie. The stats don't lie. He's wrong'. Even Caicedo's fellow teammates have been vocal with their praise about his consistent levels of performance this season. 'He's a machine. From the start of the season, he has been our best player,' Cole Palmer told Sky Sports last month. 'Wins the ball back all the time. Always 100 per cent everyday. Humble, nice to everyone and everyone loves him.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Swansea City close to third summer signing amid breakthrough for free agent
Swansea City close to third summer signing amid breakthrough for free agent The club are close to finalising their third signing of the summer Ricardo Santos is close to moving to Swansea City on a free transfer (Image: Shutterstock ) Swansea City are poised to make centre-back Ricardo Santos their third signing of the summer. The 29-year-old is currently a free agent after seeing out his deal at League One side Bolton Wanderers, but is now understood to be closing in on a move to the Swans, amid links with Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday. Should a deal be completed, Santos would follow on from the captures of Bobby Wales and Zeidane Inoussa, while Melker Widell is also set to finally link up with the squad this summer following his move from AaB in January. Sign up to the Swansea City WhatsApp service to get breaking news and top stories sent to your phone His arrival would certainly help to add more depth to Alan Sheehan's centre-back options, which have been substantially depleted following the departures of Hannes Delcroix and Kyle Naughton. There are clearly also huge questions around Harry Darling's future at the club, with the 25-year-old still pondering over an improved contract offer as his current deal runs down. Wrexham and Birmingham City are among those understood to have kept tabs on the situation, but there is still some hope that Darling could yet commit his future to the Swans. Article continues below Sources have stressed that Santos is not arriving as a potential replacement for Darling, and is instead arriving to add extra cover, with Ben Cabango currently the only recognised senior centre-back on the books for next season. There could well be further additions at the heart of defence this summer, with FC Sion's Gora Diouf believed to be one of several options the Swans have cast an eye over. Santos arrives in south Wales having spent five years with Bolton, and made over 200 appearances for the club, 32 of which came last season. Commenting on his departure from the club, he said: "So my time here is up. Crazy! I never thought I'll be writing this. Been a mad five years since I first signed. Sign up to our Swansea City newsletter here. 'We came into League Two and everyone grafted to get us that promotion straight away. "Being named Player of the Year that season, getting into the EFL Team of the Season and also being in the PFA Team of the Year four years in a row… that felt special.' Article continues below The news was clearly a blow to boss Steven Schumacher, who has also had to contend with the departure of Gethin Jones. "Decisions like these are always difficult, particularly with players like Geth and Rico who have given so much to Bolton Wanderers over the years," he told the club website.. "They were central figures in the promotion from League Two and the EFL Trophy success at Wembley and have conducted themselves with great professionalism throughout their time here."
