Rutherglen Glencairn 0 Drumchapel United 0: Pryce praises players for holding big-spending rivals in opener
Glencairn battled out a stalemate in their first game back in the West of Scotland Premier Division Joe Pryce hailed his side's battling performance as they drew 0-0 at big-spending Drumchapel United, and said that's the standard they must hit every week. Glens went toe-to-toe with Drum in their West of Scotland Premier Division opener at Dewar Park, and Pryce reckons they might have got something out of the game with a bit more bite up front. New signing Josh Gemmell nearly made an impact on his debut, but was denied by United keeper Sam Gibson. Neither keeper had a save to make in the first half, with Bradley Rodden and Kieran Moore off-target for Drumchapel, while Danny Smith blazed over for the visitors. Drumchapel's Carlo Monti curled a free kick inches wide in the second half, and Lewis McTaggart hit the outside of Blair Lochhead's post. Glencairn went close when Ryan McManus rattled the crossbar, and Gibson saved well from Gemmell. Co-boss Pryce said: 'We're going to have to perform at the level we did on Saturday for the next 29 games to get anything out of them. 'We started off with a point, it's a good thing to build on, you get yourself off the mark in your first game – but it's only a start, and we have another 29 really tough games to go. 'There were no failures in the team. I was really pleased with the goalkeeper and the back-line to keep a clean sheet. 'The midfield three worked tirelessly throughout the game, and up front the lads really worked hard, and showed a bit of quality as well. 'They were brave and courageous on the ball, they were wanting to take it in tight areas, so I was pleased with them. 'It was a good performance. In your first game back in the Premier League after a while, against a good side like Drumchapel, who have recruited really well over the summer, the first thing we had to do was show that we could compete, and they certainly did that. 'I thought we were excellent, especially in the first half. Our shape and our structure were fine, in terms of keeping the ball we were doing well, but we just lacked that wee bit of a cutting edge up front. 'We lost quite a few players from our front line last season, Jack McIlveen, Scott Jarvie and Boris Melingui, so you're talking over 30 goals, and we're looking to recruit in that area.' Glens came up from the First Division last season by finishing in the promotion spots and Pryce was impressed with how his side quickly got to grips withe the step up. He added: 'It was our first game back in the Premier League and we kept a clean sheet against a good side in Drumchapel, with real firepower up front, so you've got to be happy with that. 'It's great to be back at that level, we've fought hard to get there, so we have to make sure we try and compete. 'Lots of teams are spending quite a few pounds at this level, Drumchapel are not the only ones – every game we play in this division is going to be tough. 'But that's why you're in this division, to play against the big guns every week.'

Former St Mirren and East Kilbride ace among hat-trick of Rutherglen Glencairn signings
Glens gaffer Joe Pryce has hailed the arrival of Anton Brady, as well as two youngsters that have bolstered his squad Rutherglen Glencairn have added former Queen's Park midfielder Anton Brady to their ranks amid a hat-trick of signings this week. The West of Scotland Premier League side are keen to strengthen after losing a host of players over the summer and 31-year-old Brady brings plenty of experience alongside new young defensive duo Aidan Shields, 19, and Danny Boyle, 20, from Caledonian Locos and St Cadoc's, respectively. Brady started out at St Mirren and has enjoyed spells at East Kilbride, Spiders and Stranraer in the SPFL, while spending last season at St Cadoc's. And Glens gaffer is thrilled with the additions after eight players – Kyle Chrystal, Danny Connor, Roan Fitzpatrick, Scott Jarvie, Jack McIlveen, Chris White and Allan Woodhouse – moved on and stalwart Martin McBride retired. Pryce said: 'We need reinforcements and we need quality for the Premier League and that's what these three boys will add. 'Anton is a really good footballer. He's exactly the type that suits us as a player and a person. 'The other two young lads we have brought in are boys with bags of potential. They will do really well for us as well. 'With Aidan, his dad and his brother both played for the club so he has a bit to live up to, but he certainly looks the part. We've seen him at training and he is a good, composed defender so I think he will do well for us. 'Myself and Willie Harvey had Aidan's dad Joe at Blantyre Vics as well, he was a big no-nonsense striker and his brother Callum came in and did really well for us at centre-back. 'With Danny Boyle, he's come in from St Cadoc's and is similar to Aidan. He is a younger player who is good on the ball and a strong, composed defender who likes to play. 'These are all really good additions and I am sure there will be news this week of another couple coming in when the players' contracts end at the end of June. 'We are looking to recruit quite a few more because we have lost a bundle through pre-season. Players have moved on to other clubs. 'We are disappointed to see them go but that's the way the game is. We will try to bring in players who will be committed to playing in the Premier League for us.' Meanwhile, Pryce paid tribute to midfielder McBride who has called time on a career that saw him feature for the likes of Queen's Park, East Kilbride, Partick Thistle, Albion Rovers and Stranraer. McBride made 90 appearances for the Glens and Pryce said: 'Martin has been excellent for us, he's been a great servant and not just for us, for all the clubs he has been at. His experience and his calmness in the changing room and on the park was invaluable through the promotion run last season. 'He leaves with the best wishes of everyone at the club. He has been terrific throughout his career and he showed that, right up to his last game when he marshalled the defence to the clean sheet that got us promoted. 'We are sure we will see him again at some stage because he has got too much to offer the game of football to stop altogether.'
