Maker Heights at centre of Cornish heritage site planning row

BBC News18-06-2025
A Cornish heritage site which has become a hub for musicians, artists and makers is at the centre of a planning row.A private company has submitted plans to change the use of one of the historic buildings at Maker Heights on the Rame Peninsula to residential and commercial use, but opponents fear it could set a precedent for second homes.Evolving Places, which filed the part-retrospective planning application to turn The Straw Store into residential use, said it would help with the financial upkeep of the site. The application has received about 30 letters of opposition from residents, with one saying Maker Heights was "not a suitable place for permanent residential development."
'Significant potential'
The former military site contains five scheduled monuments, 17 Grade II* listed buildings and is situated in the protected Rame Head area of the Cornwall National Landscape, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS). A number of outbuildings on the site are already owned and managed by Evolving Places, including The Straw Store, which has been used as a holiday let.In a supporting statement to Cornwall Council, Evolving Places said it had invested "a significant amount of money in the fabric of the site, clearing, maintaining, restoring and caring for the buildings, land and monuments".It said The Straw Store had "significant potential to deliver some much-needed income".The planning statement added the elements owned by Evolving Places "desperately need a significant injection of capital to stand any chance of bringing any more buildings back to life".It said: "Supporting this application will help reduce the conservation deficit and in turn reduce the pressure for enabling development."
'Wholly unsuitable'
One of the opponents to the plan said Maker Heights was one of the "last remaining heritage landscapes" on the peninsula. They said: "Generations of families – mine included – have enjoyed this place for over four generations."The proposed plan threatens to take that away, replacing a shared community resource with private dwellings."The Rame Conservation Trust (RCT), which was formed in 1997 to protect and promote the heritage assets at Maker Heights for public benefit, said it was concerned "The Straw Store would be sold as a private residential dwelling".The RCT said: "From a heritage perspective, we would also maintain that this location is wholly unsuitable for residential use, likely to permanently change the visual and historic character of the courtyard.""We would, however, support continued use as a studio – it has recently been used as a wellbeing space," it added.

Nottingham Forest announce appointment of former Arsenal sporting director Edu Gasper as Global Head of Football

Nottingham Forest have officially announced the appointment of Edu Gaspar as their Global Head of Football. The former Arsenal sporting director takes up a newly established leadership role overseeing football operations for the Reds. There was a degree of shock among Arsenal fans back in November when Mail Sport broke the news that the former midfielder would be leaving his role at the Emirates. Edu was responsible for capturing key signings such as Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice and in leading Arsenal's strong performance in recruitment and delivering key players to the club. He is credited with playing a big role in Arsenal's return to competitiveness in recent years. It was quickly revealed that Edu was poised to link up with Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis with discussions ongoing. And that has now been confirmed with Forest announcing the news on their website. 'Edu brings a wealth of global football experience, both as a former elite player and a highly respected executive,' the club wrote. 'Since transitioning into football management in 2011, Edu has held senior roles at SC Corinthians Paulista, the Brazilian National Team, and most recently, Arsenal FC, where he has earned widespread acclaim for his innovative and strategic approach to modern football operations. Among his playing achievements are: 'During his time with Brazil as General Coordinator, Edu played a pivotal role in helping the national team lift their first Copa América for 12 years in 2019. 'As Global Head of Football, Edu will oversee all football-related functions, including recruitment, performance, squad strategy, and player development. Edu commented: 'I'm truly excited about this new chapter and honoured by the trust placed in me. This project connects deeply with my values around innovation and long-term planning. I look forward to building a global football model that is competitive, sustainable, and aligned with our President's ambition.' President Evangelos Marinakis added: 'We are extremely happy to welcome Edu to our football family. His global experience, values, and winning mindset align perfectly with our objective to strengthen and expand our international football platform.'

Jaguar Land Rover sales tumble after pausing US exports

The Tata-owned car maker revealed that retail sales slid by 15.1% to 94,420 units over the three months to June. Meanwhile, wholesale sales dropped by 10.7% to 87,286 units compared with a year earlier. The company said the significant fall in sales was partly driven by the pause in shipments to the US in April after President Trump's administration introduced new tariff plans. In April, the US government said it would launch an additional 25% tariff on car imports into the US, in an effort to encourage more car production within the country. However, the US and UK have since agreed a deal which would see a lower 10% tariff applied to the first 100,000 UK-manufactured cars imported into the US each year. UK cars imported to the US beyond this threshold will however face a 27.5% tariff. JLR halted new shipments to the US in April but restarted exports in early May amid hopes that a trade deal for the sector would be struck. The car firm said on Monday that wholesale sales in North America dropped by 12.2% year-on-year after the pause. Wholesale sales in the UK plunged by 25.5% after the market was particularly hit by the 'planned cessation of the legacy Jaguar models'. Jaguar stopped selling new cars in the UK late last year as it shifts its production to new electric models, which are set to go on sale in 2026. JLR reported that Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Defender models therefore represented 77.2% of all wholesale volumes, compared with 67.8% a year earlier.

Lidl to bring back Dyson vacuum dupe that's £189.99 cheaper than the big brand in DAYS

LIDL is bringing back its Dyson vacuum dupe for £189.99 less than the original. The Silvercrest Cordless Cyclone Vacuum Cleaner offers a similar design and features at a fraction of the price. Lidl 's Dyson dupe is hitting stores on Sunday, July 13 - priced at just £69.99. The appliance is a 2-in-1 vacuum and wet mop, featuring a handled unit for reaching tricky spots and offering a longer run time in ECO mode. In comparison, the Dyson cordless vacuum delivers stronger suction, advanced filtration and up to 40 minutes of fade-free power with quieter performance. Lidl's vacuum is priced at £69.99, while the Dyson cordless model costs £249.99 on Dyson's website, reduced from its original price of £329.99. This is just of a series of dupes rolled out by the supermarket as of late. Lidl is also offering the Beldray REVO Cordless Handheld Vacuum Cleaner for £39.99 as part of its middle aisle deals. The lightweight device is being hailed as a dupe for the Shark Cordless Handheld Vacuum, which typically sells for £129.99. The chain is also selling a multifunctional air fryer with grill and smoker features for £99.99 - nearly half the price of a similar model from Ninja. The appliance functions as an air fryer when the lid is closed and as a grill when open. The smoker function can be activated separately while the lid is closed. Parents race to Lidl for middle aisle bargains including 2 in 1 sandpit for £29 There are seven programmes for smoking, grilling, air-frying, roasting, baking, dehydrating and reheating. The budget-friendly supermarket is also selling a jacket inspired by the designer style famously worn by Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher. The Lidl by Lidl coat - named after the band's 2002 single Little by Little - is being sold for £30 in the chain's signature red, yellow and blue colours. Last October, Liam modelled a £400 Berghaus jacket in the same colours, which prompted fans to joke that he looked like a Lidl employee. One fan joked: 'Lidl are asking for their staff back!' Another chimed in: 'Proper Lidl worker's jacket.' In a nod to the band's Mancunian roots, Lidl unveiled the jacket on a 30ft 'wonderwall' outside Manchester 's Etihad Stadium, the Gallagher brothers' hometown ground.
