A man opens fire on German police near the Czech border and is shot dead
BERLIN (AP) — A man was fatally shot near Germany's border with the Czech Republic after a federal police patrol stopped his car for a check and he fired at officers, police said Sunday.
The shooting occurred on a road between Schirnding and Münchenreuth, just inside Germany, on Saturday afternoon.
Bavarian police said the driver left his car and fired at the officers, who returned fire and fatally wounded him. He died at the scene.
The driver, who was alone in the car, was identified as a 47-year-old Iranian who had lived in the Mannheim area of southwestern Germany for several years.
Police believe he was returning from a trip to the Czech Republic to buy drugs, as he was carrying a 'low three-digit gram' quantity of crystal meth, according to a Bavarian police statement.

Cops: Over 200 suspects probed in S$5.8m scam sweep across Singapore
SINGAPORE, June 6 — More than 200 individuals are under investigation in Singapore after a major police operation targeting scams that cost victims over S$5.84 million (RM19.2 million). The two-week enforcement effort, which ran from May 23 to June 5, involved a coordinated islandwide sweep and netted 232 suspects — 149 men and 83 women — aged between 17 and 77. According to a police statement issued today, they are believed to be involved in over 980 scam cases. The scams span a wide range, including bogus job offers, e-commerce fraud, impersonation of friends or officials, fake investments and rental scams. The suspects are alleged to have acted either as scammers or money mules. Authorities are investigating the individuals for offences including cheating, money laundering, and operating unlicensed payment services. Depending on the charge, they face potential jail terms ranging from three to 10 years, and fines that could go as high as S$500,000. The crackdown comes amid a surge in scam activity across Singapore. In 2024 alone, more than S$1.1 billion was lost to scams — a record high and the first time losses have crossed the billion-dollar mark. A total of 51,501 scam cases were reported that year, continuing an upward trend that has persisted since 2019.

Drugs kingpin convicted of running cannabis farms
The head of an organised crime group has been convicted of running a network of drug factories capable of producing millions of pounds worth of cannabis. Roman Le, from Birmingham, operated at least eight farms - and was linked to one inside a former nightclub - before he was arrested and charged with conspiring to produce cannabis, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said. Posing as a property developer, Le found premises to buy or rent, even erecting scaffolding on some, and used illegal migrants to monitor the crops. He denied the charge but was found guilty at Birmingham Crown on Thursday. The 37-year-old is due to be sentenced on 4 July. The farms were based across the Midlands, North West and north Lincolnshire, the NCA said. Le worked with two others Yihao Feng, 29, from Manchester, and David Qayumi, 36, from Birmingham, to source and operate the properties, the NCA said. Feng and Qayumi both later pleaded guilty to conspiring to produce cannabis, the NCA confirmed. During the NCA's operation, officers saw Le parking his Bentley Continental outside the former Big Bamboo nightclub in Coventry and heading inside. The premises was later raided by the NCA and West Midlands Police and 1,500 cannabis plants, worth more than £1m, were growing over three floors. Three other men were later jailed for running the industrial-scale cannabis farm in the abandoned nightclub. A former pub in Birmingham and an old hotel in Lancashire were also found to be cannabis farms, the NCA said. Officers raided the Queen's Head public house in Farm Street in Hockley and arrested six Albanian nationals who were running the farm and more than 300 plants were seized. Investigators later found the pub and surrounding land had been sold to a company controlled by Le. A lock-up storage unit in Aston that had been leased by Qayumi was also raided and officers found equipment used to grow cannabis, lighting units, carbon filters, nutrients, plant pots and grow tents, the NCA said. All three men had been seen by officers visiting the unit. Le, who was arrested at his apartment in Essex Street in Birmingham in November 2020, claimed he was a legitimate businessman who had no knowledge that the properties he had interests in were being used for cannabis grows, detective said. NCA branch commander Kevin Broadhead said: "Roman Le claimed he was a legitimate property developer, but in actual fact he fronted an organised crime gang capable of producing millions of pounds worth of cannabis." Officers find man shot, killed at Macon apartment complex. Investigation underway
The Bibb County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal shooting that happened at a local apartment complex Thursday. The sheriff's office said in a news release that officers were called to the Autumn Trace Apartments located at 1745 Rocky Creek Road just before 7:30 p.m. regarding a person shot. 'Deputies arrived on scene and discovered a male inside of an apartment unresponsive with a gunshot wound,' the sheriff's office said. The victim was pronounced dead on scene by Deputy Coroner Lonnie Miley, the sheriff's office said. The victim was identified as Marcus Cunningham, 22, Coroner Leon Jones told The Telegraph. He had a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead just before 8:30 p.m. The incident was under investigation Thursday evening.
