Chris Selley: Is Sir John A. Macdonald being set up for a fall?

National Post30-05-2025
All eyes will be on Toronto later this summer — or they should be, because it could be darkly hilarious. That's when Queen's Park undertakes a bold, interdisciplinary experiment in Canadian history, policing and law: The province is going to let Sir John A. Macdonald's statue out of the plywood prison it has inhabited for five years. The monument had been restored after previous vandalism, only to find itself in a box to prevent future vandalism.

It is possible, as National Post's Tristin Hopper argued this week, that we may be seeing the end of 'Canada's nationwide purge of historic figures and names' — at least by governments themselves. That'd be nice. But has anyone asked the yobbos who vandalize and tear down statues if they're done with the purge?

'How are you going to stop the same thing from happening all over again?' was among the questions reporters asked of the people in charge. The answer wasn't entirely convincing.

'Legislative security will be keeping a close eye on it,' The Canadian Press assured us, based on speaker of the legislature Donna Skelly's remarks. Legislative security and the Ontario Provincial Police, who patrol the legislature grounds (with assistance from the Toronto Police Service), had better be keeping a close eye on it, because Skelly even invited the Macdonald-haters to come to the as-yet-unscheduled unveiling.

'People have the right to protest here. As long as no one is hurt, and you don't break the rules or the law, you're welcome,' said Skelly (a Progressive Conservative MPP), before taking it even further: 'This is where you should be protesting.'

Of course, it's unlikely anyone would try to splatter, behead or topple Macdonald during an official event. So one hopes the Queen's Park security aces at least have a camera or two trained on the statue, if not to actually prevent any vandalism then at least to apprehend and charge the offenders.

But then, this is a city where a certain traffic speed-enforcement camera has been taken down five times by vandals in six months — and in one case, subsequently thrown in a pond — and apparently no one has thought to install a camera that might record people doing it. We are not imaginative people.

Montreal police never found the gang that beheaded Macdonald's statue in Place du Canada in 2020; instead, the city just decided not to reinstall it, since it was constantly getting vandalized. Problem solved! Why waste police time over some old dead bronze guy?

In 2021, something calling itself an Indigenous Unity Rally hauled down the statue of Macdonald in Gore Park in Hamilton, Ont. City police investigated in earnest, by the sounds of it, and laid charges against a 56-year-old suspect. Then, prosecutors stayed the charges.

An ETS bus from the city's Stuff-a-Bus food donation campaign on Nov. 22, 2024. (File) The city has partnered with two organizations to collect the essentials Edmonton students need to succeed in the upcoming school year. Staples and United Way have joined Edmonton for its first-ever Stuff-a-Bus for Schools campaign, a spinoff of the city's Stuff-a-Bus food donation campaign that's run during the holidays for the past 30 years. Until Aug. 22, Edmontonians can drop off school supplies in donation boxes located at any city-run centre. On Aug. 23 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., donations can be brought to buses parked outside all eight Staples locations in the city. Cash, credit and debit donations will be accepted on-site on Aug. 23. Most-needed items include: backpacks; pencils, pens, erasers; binders, dividers, paper; notebooks, duo-tangs; crayons, pencil crayons; highlighters, markers; and scissors, glue sticks, rulers. A list of locations to donate and more information can be found on the city's website.

Witnesses sharing video of alleged arson online should contact investigators, Richmond RCMP say

An RCMP vehicle is seen in Richmond, B.C., in this undated image. (Shutterstock) Mounties in Richmond are asking people sharing video of an alleged arsonist online to contact investigators directly if they haven't already. A person of interest has been identified in the incident, which occurred around 1:20 a.m. Sunday at a store in the 8300 block of Granville Avenue, Richmond RCMP said in a news release Tuesday. An employee reported the fire, which had allegedly been deliberately set outside the building, according to police, who said no one was injured in the arson attempt. Firefighters extinguished the blaze. 'Our investigators are aware of footage circulating on social media,' said Cpl. Melissa Lui, in the news release. 'While we appreciate the concern being shown, we ask anyone who has video footage or information about this incident to contact police investigators directly. Sharing information with us will ensure it becomes part of the official investigation and helps hold those responsible accountable.' Those with information to share should call Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212 and quote file number 25-26618, police said. Tips can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers.

‘It lit up the whole street!': Blaze damages two Sarnia homes

Two homes were damaged after fire broke out on Griffith Road in Sarnia on Aug. 18, 2025. (Sean Irvine/CTV News London) A fire in Sarnia has damaged two homes and left a family shaken. The fire began at a split-level residence on Griffith Road around 11 p.m. Monday. Payton West, who lives next door, said she and her mother were alerted by a 'bang' and the smell of smoke. 'At first, we thought it was our house, and I started freaking out. Then my mom came outside and saw my neighbour's house was on fire,' said West. When she went to look for herself, she immediately felt intense heat from the blaze. 'The fire was huge! It was the whole right side of the house. Like, it lit up the whole street!' Firefighters arrived within minutes and at the time, there was initial word that a family could be inside. SARNIA FIRE - GRIFFITH ROAD - AUG 2025 Two homes were damaged after fire broke out on Griffith Road in Sarnia on Aug. 18, 2025. (Sean Irvine/CTV News London) 'Fortunately, all three residents had gotten out of the house already, and we proceeded to fight the fire and do search and rescue,' said Mike Otis with Sarnia fire. The family managed to escape from the back of the house and were quickly guided to safety by first responders. Meanwhile, the fire spread next door. Initially, three stations, consisting of nearly 20 firefighters were called to the scene. But as the second house caught fire, a fourth station was called in to help. The blaze was under control within half an hour and damage is extensive. Fire investigators spent several hours at the scene searching for a cause. Meanwhile, as a general reminder to all homeowners, Otis is stressing the importance of smoke alarms. 'Over two thirds of people who die in fires, it is because they didn't have working smoke alarms,' he said. Thankfully in Monday's fire, that wasn't the case. 'Absolutely, yeah. I'm just glad everyone is out and safe,' said West.
